I emailed MSI about that rebate and they replied...
"Hi, I was browsing around newegg.com and noticed a lot of your products have a new promotion for June (seen here http://images10.newegg.com/uploadfilesfornewegg/rebate/SH/MSI27MIRsJun01Jun3011lh15.pdf). I'm wondering if this MSI VGA June Promotion for US Only is available on products bought on other sites such as buy.com and amazon that do not specify these rebates."
"Dear Customer: Purchase made from Amazon will qualify to claim the rebate and purchase made from buy.com US only will qualify to claim the rebate. Best regards, Rebate Customer Service" pretty sick, that means the $80 card that soldout on newegg can be bought with the same rebate on buy.com woot! i think imma get it

Hi guys. I saw other people posting requests in here so I thought I'd do the same. Right now I play games on a laptop which is failing me so I think its time to get a nice desktop now that I have the money for it. I'm a noob at computer hardware and I've never built one before but I've started doing some research.
Anyways:
+ Show Spoiler +What is your budget?
~$1600 give or take.
What is your resolution?
Need a new monitor as part of the build. I have a keyboard/mouse though.
What are you using it for?
I want to be able to run BF3, D3, and ofc SC2 on ultra/max settings and want to be able to stream.
What is your upgrade cycle?
This will be my first desktop in probably about 8 years or so. I've been using a laptop for everything for 3ish years now and finally have the money to buy a decent machine =). I wouldn't plan on upgrading any really, I'd just continue to play games on lower and lower settings as the years go by so I'd like to spend some money now and make the machine somewhat future proof.
When do you plan on building it?
Possibly in a week or so. I was going to wait a month or two for BF3/D3 to get closer but my laptop is starting to fail me and I'm lagging in SC2 on the lowest settings even ;x.
Do you plan on overclocking?
Probably not. I don't know anything about overclocking a computer.
Do you need an Operating System?
Yes, but this isn't a big deal because I can get a student discount on windows so it is only $30 or so for me.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Possibly? I'm not really sure if I should get 1 good card or two lesser ones.
Where are you buying your parts from?
Newegg or Amazon probably. There are some computer stores around where I live though so I guess I could tell them what I want and have them build it for me. But I feel like I could do it myself and save some money, plus I want to learn more about building computers.
Thanks for any suggestions and help =)

Only tweak I'd make with your larger budget is to get 8GB of RAM instead of 4GB with today's shell shocker deal on newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428). 8GB of DDR3 1600 (that looks sexy) for $70? Hell yes.
Also, to answer your question, unless you really want to have two cards in your machine, it's almost always better to just have 1 powerful GPU rather than two less powerful ones working together.

Funny, first tweak I'd make with his larger budget would be an SSD before 8GB of RAM. Sure he can afford both, but a 120GB Intel 320 would make a huge, really noticeable difference when loading software and booting, an additional 4GB of memory would make tiny differences in performance of some software and multitasking.

I'd also probably bump up to a 560 Ti or a 570 and slightly more PSU if 570. That would all fit inside the larger budget easily, and be a massive performance increase. Throw in a nice high end case like a Silverstone RV02, and you're all set for a high end gaming rig with smoking fast load times, high reliability, low noise, great air cooled OC potential, that can do almost anything you could ask of it.

Not really... OCZ units are on sale all the time and there are better deals such as the Antec Earthwatts that sold out or when a CX430 V2 or Neo Eco 450 is on sale for $30.

Or $20 after AMIR, like the CX430 V2 was yesterday and today? Wouldn't be surprised if that sold out though.

OCZ units are on sale all the time so I don't see how it's a noteworthily sale. It's Wednesday, all the good sales have already sold out long time ago such as the Antec Earthwatts 650w for $40 (which is btw a hell lot better than the OCZ). I'd wait for the next sale in ~6 hours.

skyR, you recommended a 430w PSU earlier, but using that calculator posted above and factoring in a sound card and a network card, it said recommended was just over 500w. However, I did use the GTX 560 Ti instead of the GTX 560 (didn't see an option for it) so that would inflate the number, but does that mean I should maybe consider a 500w PSU?

Well, if you add things that draw decent power (Like PCIE sound cards), that we don't tend to account for unless specifically asked to, since most people are content with onboard audio or go with crazy audiophile setups with external amps and stuff, of course the requirements will end up being way higher.
|
I'm not sure what calculator you used but http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine puts your configuration (core i5 2400, GTX 560 Ti, along with the discrete sound card and nic) at a recommdnation of 371w at 90% load.
|
Hmm. Maybe I had some wrong settings checked. I did however put it at 100% load, I understand that it will never actually reach that though. I only ask because the guy who's going to be helping me build it had a strong preference for a 500w over a 430w, but I may try to dissuade him because of this. Thanks!

I only ask because the guy who's going to be helping me build it had a strong preference for a 500w over a 430w, but I may try to dissuade him because of this. Thanks!
The friend that "knows computers" or "works at a computer store", or worse, the "family member that works in IT" is usually the last person you want to listen to, because they're thinking shit grade PSU's that get slapped in prebuilts, as opposed to good equipment.

Obviously open if there is a better choice out there. I don't claim to be an expert, which is why I'm here for help
If you have an alternate build you think would be better I'd love to see it. Just looking for some helpful advice.
