Running the case open often disrupts airflow and makes temperatures worse, though I suspect that for a case with a single fan, there's not much original airflow to disrupt. If you use multiple graphics cards, what helps the most for traditional cases is using an intake fan right above the two cards on the side panel.
Asus P8P67 Deluxe seems like an oddly expensive choice.
For the record, 650W is too low for SLI GTX 480, though very comfortable for SLI GTX 560 Ti. GTX 480 can easily take over 250W in games.
Some may feel like 1920x1080 is a small resolution for a 27" screen, but that will depend on how far you sit from the monitor. It may be better or equivalent to just use a cheaper 23" and put it a little bit closer.
NH-U12P should be very good, but it's clearly way overkill for Sandy Bridge and not worth the price. People get Noctua when they want high-end air cooling that's quiet, yet you're suggesting running the case with the side open and also considered SLI GTX 480, so noise is clearly not a concern. Anyway, a $40 Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B also cools really well and is really quiet. But you can honestly go with a Hyper 212 Plus and overclock a i5-2500k to 4.7 GHz fine.

It's Seagate, so if you don't like that, you could go with this Western Digital Caviar Blue for $60. Also, I'm no expert, but that CPU cooler looks pretty expensive. How effective is it? checking benchmarks, it is one of the top performing (non liquid) coolers i've seen. I originally had the coolermaster 212 ($40) but a friend who overclocks like mad said it wouldnt be enough for my proposed 4.7GHz overclock so we'll see! Thanks very much for that link, you guys in this thread are so helpful
Ah, I didn't realize you were overclocking that far XD Have you considered putting in a little extra to get the Noctua D14? Apparently, it's top notch for a slight increase in cost.
EDIT: Unless the 212+ is fine, in which case, go for it. Should probably be $30, though.

Hyper 212+ is one of the best cost/performance air coolers, and gets almost the same performance as that noctua, for a lot less price.

Mind you, I'm biased, I love my Hyper 212+, and generally suggest it as ideal for most people who plan to stick to air and aren't planning to go completely crazy with the Air cooled OC.

shit meant to put pro on there haha woops.
also, someone said cooling can be worse if the case is open? how could that be? posting from my phone now so sorry if posts get wonky!

Any case with better build quality than a shoe box is at least somewhat engineered for the air to move through it in a way that is good for cooling. Taking the side off of the case gives the airflow a path of least resistance that doesn't go toward your coolers.

Newegg.ca ships from the same warehouses as Newegg.com so it's definitely not a stocking issue.

newegg.ca originally did when it opened, but now everything is done via a mississauga warehouse

Nope. The Ontario warehouse does not carry every component listed on Newegg. The majority of orders are still shipped from the states. The Coolermaster Hyper 212+ ships from the states as indicated by the shipping courier and shipping charges.

Ok now I dont know whats going on. I have had windows 7 DL'd for 2 days now, My comp was running fine and all, but just 10 mins ago it decided to turn it self off again...
I am not sure what is wrong. any suggestions well be helpful.
Thanks.
Note- Trying to reinstall windows at this moment, hopefully that might do somethign

Might be a heat issue or a faulty power supply. Unfortunately there is no way to test for a faulty power supply unless you have a multimeter.
|
Yeah I dont have one of those.. I dont think its a heat issue, System temp 30c CPU 38c- But,...How do I check again when I have W7 installed? and if it is indeed a heat issue how would i fix that?
For the power supply should I just go return it?
|
When did the shutdown happen? If it was just idling on the desktop than it most likely isn't a heat issue. You can check both CPU and GPU temperatures by downloading HWMonitor ( http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html ). If the shut down occured during a gaming session than you would have to stress your graphics card and processor by either running a stress-test (Furmark for GPU and Prime95 for CPU) or playing a game to see the load temps of both components.
For the power supply, yes you would have to return it.
|
Yeah comp was just idling, I was at the main screen just looking at my personal setting for the background and it reset.
So that means its a power supply issue most likely... ahh I dont feel like driving to fry's.
Thanks for the help
|
You should still check temperatures though.
|
I cant DL that I dont have internet yet on that comp... I will DL it once I get internet. And persay if does have temp problems- how should I fix that ?
Note- I live in san diego its around 65 degrees here.

Is it possible to make a good streaming build for less than $700? (sc2). Thanks.

It depends on what settings you're playing on. In general, though:
Core i5-2400 (~$190) H61 Motherboard (~$70) Radeon 5670 (~$70) 4GB DDR3 RAM (~$40) EarthWatts 380D (~$40) Case (~$50) 500GB HDD (~$50) Windows 7 ($100)
Total: ~$610
Microcenter has i5-2400 for $150, though, which means there's an extra $40 to spend on, say, a Radeon 5770, bringing the total up to ~$620. 8GB RAM would add an additional $30.
If you have a .edu email address or know somebody willing to lend you theirs, you can also get an upgrade version of Windows 7 for $30 (it can be used as a full retail version, though).
|
^how well do you think that could play sc2 w/o and w/ streaming? (what settings w/o lag).
