does fully modular really matter that much to you? theres only one cable ive got to hide and thats the spare 4+4 one, it really wont matter that much man.

if you really need fully modular, you could try the silverstone ST60F-P, but i dunno about its performance

It's not a deal-breaker, but I'm not sure there's reason to spend extra on a 750W PSU for a single GPU system. I should be okay with a quality 600W, no?

i have a 6950 and a 2500k, and its plenty lol. you could run two 6950s with 600watts

iirc, the xfx black is based off the seasonic m12d, and its a great psu, and pretty cheap too. you wont need all the wattage but its a better psu than the silverstone one

@Ingenol

Even a quality 500w unit will be capable of running a single 6950 but fully and semi modular ones usually don't start that low or come at a very high premium.

Fully modular PSUs:

Silverstone Strider Plus 600w @ $110 (42a on 12v, 3 year warranty)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256064

Seasonic X560 @ $125 (46a on 12v, 5 year warranty)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151098

Seasonic X650 @ $140 (54a on 12v, 5 year warranty)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088

Corsair AX750 @ $170 (62a on 12v, 7 year warranty)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139016

Semi modular PSUs:

Antec Truepower New 650W @ $80 (54a on 12v, 5 year warranty)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371021

XFX XXX Edition 650W @ $89 (52a on 12v, 5 year warranty)

Modular is nice but not necessary if you're careful with your cabling. I would still recommend spending the extra money you save by not getting modular on a more robust PSU though. 1) it gives you room to upgrade to more powerful/higher wattage parts in the future. 2) The more headroom you have the less strain it is on your PSU meaning it will generate less heat and might last longer as well. 3) I don't actually have a third reason I just think thats lists in three's are prettier :D

Thanks guys! I'm just going to go with the Antec TP-650. It's not worth it to pay extra for fully modular for me right now.

Urgent: I am building my computer right now. The CPU cooler that comes in the box already has some thermal paste applied. Should I also apply some more? I'm thinking to replace the cooler in the future and don't want to have my CPU muddied with paste and not actually being cooled properly by the next cooler if I would add a second layer then.

You do not need to apply thermal paste if it is already pre-applied. If you want to use your own aftermarket thermal paste, you'll need to remove the pre-applied thermal paste before applying yours.

When you are replacing your heatsink, you should always remove the old thermal paste and apply a new layer.

All of XFX's power supplies are made by Seasonic.

removing old thermal paste isnt that bad. just rub it off with a soft cloth and some rubbing alcohol. skyr is right, you should always use new thermal paste.

Uh does this budget require an operating system?

Is your RAM DDR3?

What does maybe might need a PSU mean?

Is your case ATX or mATX?

~$300 would get you a Core i3 2100, H61 / H67 motherboard, and a GTS 450 / Radeon 5770.

You would have to open up your computer and look at the label on the side of the power supply. If this is a prebuilt by Dell / HP than you are better off building an entirely new computer... power supplies that come with these are generally crap and the case is also generally crap.

So is your RAM DDR3? DDR2 and DDR3 are not interchangeable ...

XXX edition and black edition are both by Seasonic, but the black edition is significantly better. They're different designs though. Black edition is their M12D, which is still really good--better in some ways than the X series even. It uses DC-DC to generate 3.3V/5V from 12V, unlike the traditional individual regulation of the XXX edition. The XXX edition is very good too, other than some really bad high 3.3V/5V with low 12V crossloading results. But those kinds of loads you'll never see on a modern computer, so it's safe.
