nvm. reacted too soon.
"The systems with the affected support chips have only been shipping since January 9th"
Since I bought it on release date, I highly doubt I'm affected by this. Or maybe I am? Their wording really irritates me -_- systems as in prebuilts or motherboards? ****ing intel ><

Hm that sucks. But i am not quite sure if it affects me or not. Does every Sandy Bridge Board use this controller? Or just some of them? I got the AsRock P67 Pro3. But on the specification page at asrock i didn't find the name of the controller. Is there a list of affected boards?

The P67 chipset controls the 6 sata controllers on your board so its highly likely you're affected.

Oh, so I was about to buy a i5 2500K and a P67 board. Are there some manufacturers that this doesn't affect?

Every manufacturer uses P67 so everybody is affected by Intel's expensive mistake. EVGA said this doesn't affect them but their boards haven't even been released yet so >.>

Update from Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4142/intel-discovers-bug-in-6series-chipset-begins-recall
Intel Discovers Bug in 6-Series Chipset: Our Analysis It’s Limited to 3Gbps Ports Only Interestingly enough the problem doesn’t affect ports 1 & 2 on the 6-series chipset. Remember that Intel has two 6Gbps ports and four 3Gbps ports on P67/H67, only the latter four are impacted by this problem.
The Fix The SATA bug exists in hardware and there’s no way to provide a driver or firmware update that can fix it. The fix requires a metal layer change, which will result in a new hardware stepping (resulting in the ~3 week delay before replacement hardware is ready).
What About Current Sandy Bridge Owners? On its conference call to discuss the issue, Intel told me that it hasn’t been made aware of a single failure seen by customers. Intel expects that over 3 years of use it would see a failure rate of approximately 5 - 15% depending on usage model. Remember this problem isn’t a functional issue but rather one of those nasty statistical issues, so by nature it should take time to show up in large numbers (at the same time there should still be some very isolated incidents of failure early on).
Intel has already halted production of its 6-series chipsets and will begin shipping fixed versions of the chipset in late February. You can expect motherboard shortages through March at least. Intel hopes to be able to meet demand by April.
Intel is starting to have discussions with OEMs today (yep, you read that right) on how to handle the recall and when fixed hardware will be available. This is the reason why there’s currently no official, public recall plan in place. In the coming weeks I expect this to get ironed out but for now the best advice I can give existing SNB owners is to use their 6Gbps ports and wait.

So if I'm planning on only using 2 hard drives, this doesn't affect me at all?
|
No it shouldn't, in fact it won't affect most people in any way at all. Intel are just being a responsible company, much to the detriment of their stock value

As long as you're using the SATA 6Gb/S connections and you only need two of them, yeah.
...Unless they find something wrong with those two. Grawr.

well realistically if it was found out later than intel found out about the issue and hid it, and a significant number of people had failures, they'd probably get sued which would hurt more

I would send the board back anyways

I need help on a video card that I can get that could comfortably run SC2. My current video card a gforce 8800 GTS always does this clicking sound at the start of a SC2 game or during load, then the screen freezes and I can only wait for about 2 minutes for it to unfreeze and continue with the game. If it happens during the loading no problem, but otherwise if it happens during the start of the game I usually get a disconnect. It happens now more frequently because I recently bought a LCD TV and hooked it up to the other DVI port on the video card (but things were already bad enough before so I need a fix).
I will be upgrading my whole computer in about 2-3 months, but right now I'm just seeking for a quick fix, something that could support my monitor(1280x1024), TV(1920x180) and SC2 (I play SC2 on the monitor only). Right now my mobo would be MSI P965 Platinum (MS-7238). So is there a video card (price range $75-100, using newegg.com) that anyone could recommend that is able to do this without upgrading anything else on my current computer, but at the same time when I do get my new computer I could just remove this video card and put it into the new system.

Thinking about buying a computer. Got about $700-$800 I'm willing to spend. I know very very little about assembling a computer, or what components are compatible but I have a couple of questions.
Is now a good time to buy a computer? Should I wait for SSD/LED screens to go down in price? What options are there other than buying an OS? How do I know if things are compatible with eachother?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

This Sandy Bridge problem is so good for AMD. Now Bulldozer won't be as late as it would have been had the delay not occurred.

i5-2500k has been "deactivated" on newegg? I was just about to buy a new computer...
|
Thank god my board thats coming has 4 SATA3 ports 2 on intels controller and 2 on marvell.

Thanks again for your help Myrmidon, I'll take what you said into account seeing as I now have more time to think about my system's specs as I don't plan on getting a p67 if there are problems with it...
|
LOLZ grats Intel on fucking shit up.
Good thing my Federal tax refund hasn't come in yet or I would been SOLed.
I might just go AMD and go with Bulldozer seeing how bad Intel is doing right now.
