Good thing my Federal tax refund hasn't come in yet or I would been SOLed.
I might just go AMD and go with Bulldozer seeing how bad Intel is doing right now. The problem will be fix before bulldozer is even out so lol. And if you wait for bulldozer it be so close to intel releasing another batch of cpus you'll be forever in wait.

Hey guys
Got a couple of questions relating to this new sandy bridge error that intel has discovered.
I just brought the P8P67 which has 2x6g/b SATA ports and 2x3 gb sata ports.
Q1 - If i have a DVD plugged in on the 3gb SATA drive, but i very rarely use it (i.e i only watch a dvd once a month), does that mean that it may be 4+ years until the error will seriously affect me?
Q2 - What if it is a secondary HD that i plug in, and i very rarely access information on it?
Q3 - On the intel website, it lists that it expects 5 - 15% of the boards being affected. Does that mean that there is a 85% chance that my mobo isn't affected, and thus im freaking about it for nothing?
Thanks guys

I have absolutely no knowledge of hardware, and am on the urge of just buying a Dell Vostro desktop straight off the site.
I'm looking for 1440x900 resolution, ~medium graphics on SC2, some streaming, possibly a small amount of video editing. My budget is ~$600, but I can go over if doing so will give huge benefits since it's self-imposed. I plan on using Windows 7/Vista, don't know anything about overclocking/GPUs, and can buy my stuff from Fry's or newegg. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon.
Anyone have a nice build on hand that fits those requirements? :/
Also, does it take a lot of extra resources to use two screens? I just want to have it so I can have SC2 open on one screen, and, say, Notepad or AIM on the other. Nothing crazy.

Not by much, it gives AMD is a huge amount of breathing room. They basically won the lottery with this problem, not because Intel fucked up because that's meaningless. Its because they fucked up at the worst time to fuck up.
The timing is really, really bad. I can't imagine the response to this issue (RMA, fixing the boards, etc) being very prompt because of the Lunar New Year; basically every company whether it be Intel, the OEMs, and other partners will be closed during this time of the year.
Anyway, Bulldozer is probably going to be utterly pointless for end users (guess that's why John Fruehe is all SERVER SERVER SERVER and not really talking about the benefits it has for consumers...its not really consumer tech anyway) but you may as well wait and see how Z68 and the 990FX turns out with this happening.

I JUST bought a MSI P67A-GD55 motherboard and intel i5 2500k sandy bridge literally 2 days ago... since I got a package deal from NCIX I cant get a refund (they're still unopened) , and it looks like they have completely purged the entire site of any LGA1555 boards Brutal Timing.
I'm not entirely sure what the difference between a 3gb and a 6gb sata port is... can someone please explain? The board says it has the following....
- Supports four SATAII ports (SATA3~6) by P67 PCH - Supports two SATAIII ports (SATA1~2) by P67 PCH
I run 2 hard drives and a single optical drive.... can I run the HDD's off the two SataIII ports and run the optical from a SataII port?
Please help

From what I understand, its only the SATA2 ports that are 'defective'. So theoretically (I'm no tech guru, but I have learned a considerable amount over the past few weeks while I've been trying to build my own computer) you could put your two hard drives on your SATA3 ports, and never see a problem there. Then, only your optical drive has a chance to cause you problems. But then again, if the problem does arise for you (intel has said that only 5-15% of boards will actually show this issue) I don't see why you cant just use another SATA2 port seeing as you have 4, but really only need one.

But then again, if the problem does arise for you (intel has said that only 5-15% of boards will actually show this issue) I don't see why you cant just use another SATA2 port seeing as you have 4, but really only need one. From a quick read over the issue yesterday (read: I could be very wrong), I think the issue effects all SATA2 ports equally. You should be right about this not making much of a difference though.
The problem is that there's a transistor in the phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit with a specific structural composition in the wrong place, so it's getting more voltage than it's designed to handle. Thus, it's prone to leaking excess current and failing over time. The PLL in question is responsible for all of the SATA2 ports that the 6 series chipset handles. Its job in any such communications system is to keep the receiver in synch with the transmitter's communications (to determine when one bit starts and the next starts, and so on).
The PLL should only be functionally active and getting full power (and thus deteriorating fully) whenever there are communications over any of the SATA2 ports. Otherwise, the system is in a lower-power state that's probably going to be less stressful. I think this is why they're saying that your level of usage will effect how long on average it should take before you experience problems.

Just wanted to think everyone here, especially Myrmidon. I ended up going with
Phenom II X2 560 BE ASUS M4N68T-M V2 8 GB (2x4) Corsair DDR3 1333 Ati Radeon 4670 1gb 1TB F3 Spinpoint 600w StealthXStream II LG Optical Drive Antec Nine Hundred Two case
All for 400 dollars which was well under my budget. Everything should be here by thursday, stuff is slowly trickling in to me placing several different orders. I am hoping to overclock some and maybe even unlock a core or two. I will be upgrading my graphics card very shortly as well as upgrading my processor when Bulldozer comes out.
Thanks guys!
Edit: The large difference in quality between ram, case, processor, and graphics card is due to me buying parts over the span of a month using slickdeals. I bought parts as I saw unbeatable deals (8 gigs of ram for 40 dollars, 4670 for 15 dollars, etc).

You need a new motherboard to upgrade to bulldozer so it seems kind of pointless =\ Just skip bulldozer and wait for Ivybridge or Haswell =p

The motherboard came free with the processor, 100 dollars bundled together, so I don't mind. Like I said I was so far under budget that I don't mind upgrading in 2-3 months at all. But i'll look into Ivybridge and Haswell to see if it's cost effective to just wait.

wrong... the problem has to do with the chipset the problem itself is dealing between the chipset's sata controller and the rest of the mobo, a small % of them will degrade over time eventually the sata 3.0 ports will become unusable. The sata 6.0 ports are left immune to this problem. This isn't the world if falling intel pulled out a recall and is fixing it the motherboards are expected to be back on the market late feb to march. There are 0 reports of it bricking a hdd the problem is decreased performance until the 3.0 ports no longer work. (Quoted from another thread)
I have a concern about this. I'm wondering if my build uses any 3.0 ports. If not, I can just order the parts now and not have to worry about the fix, which I won't need. I know Newegg doesn't sell the parts now, so I'll have to go through amazon or something. Here is my build: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=16481946 Now since it is Newegg, it won't have the motherboard listed. It was an ASUS P8P67 priced at $189.99 USD.
I think the Vertex 2 SSD uses a 3.0 port? If so, maybe I can order a 6.0 SSD, so that I can order this build worry free? (If I can find one of the P67 boards + the i5-2500K from another site that is...)

Uh sata devices are interchangeable. You can plug sata 2 into sata 3 and vice versa. Just use the sata 3 ports and you'll be fine.
Most places have pulled all their motherboards and processors so good luck finding one.

Sigh. If I can't find any, I'll be forced to go AMD. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

When the motherboards come back(late febuary to mid march), intel should have fixed the problem after all this is projected in costing them 700,000,000 dollars for this recall. I'm pretty sure they are going to fix it.
Also sata 6.0 ports can take sata 3.0 drives no issue if that is what you're wondering. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148348 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233154 As far as an ssd with sata 6.0 drive the Crucial one is around the same price and is blazing fast, ssd's are pretty much the only drive that benefits form more bandwidth
but the Crucial one is faster in reads slower in writes, but as long as you have trim on it's fine.
Oddly enough this should align with intel newer ssd's which support sata 6.0 but ionno pricing and performance. sandforce 2xxx+ aren't expected until Q3 though

So why are stores pulling the processors too? There isn't anything wrong with them. So if I can order a P67 motherboard on Thursday, I should be able to find a processor somewhere a week later right?
|
Processors are being pulled because theres no point in having processors for sale when theres no motherboards to put them in. And I guess its to prevent dumb consumers from putting them into 1156 sockets.

Lol
Oh well, I guess that does make sense, there are a lot of stupid people who would ruin the processors and call Intel or wherever they bought it from for a refund. I'll just have to search the entire Internet as best as I can for the mobo and cpu in the next week and a half. Thanks guys.

Hey now - Newegg reviews are always great for laughs. How dare they deprive us of that.
