On May 07 2013 08:52 FlilFlam wrote:+ Show Spoiler +Hello, i'm back and ready to order parts for a new computer, i have a visa card that should have no problems ordering from anywhere that accepts visa and delivers to Canada. I've already given details about what i'm looking for but some things have changed so here is the OP's list of questions + Show Spoiler +
What is your budget?
I have a visa card with exactly 1000 Canadian dollars... That is my budget...
What is your resolution?
My current resolution is 1280x720. I don.t expect it to go anywhere beyond 1360x768 (my monitors native resolution)
What are you using it for?
My goal is to stream and play games. I prefer to play on mostly low quality settings as i value performance above everything else. I will plan on streaming at around 20 fps at 720p, or whatever my 2mbps upload can handle. I don't know if i should go for an overclock build or not, whatever gets me the most bang for my buck is what I'll go with.
What is your upgrade cycle?
I'll probably upgrade within a year either by adding more ram or upgrading the GPU.
When do you plan on building it?
Immediately, i can wait up to 20-30 days or so if there is some sort of new release or sale, if it's worth it.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I want to play sc2 and stream, i have 1000$, i need a case and an operating system, you tell me!
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I could theoretically add a second GPU but i would rather sacrifice such a capability for better performance now. I can always just upgrade to a single powerful GPU down the road.
Where are you buying your parts from?
Any website that delivers to Canada or is in the HRM (halifax region) of NS Canada.
Advice and assistance in creating the ideal build for me would be much appreciated. Canadians, how much were various taxes and shipping again? Need to shoot for ~$850 in cart? Less? More?
Though at this point, Haswell launch on June 2nd counts as within 30 days.

Basically shoot for 850 yea, but 830-840 to be safe i guess

$100 OS $210 CPU (Core i5 that can be overclocked) $100 motherboard (that can overclock the i5) $25 aftermarket heatsink $35 RAM (uh, 4 GB for now to save money here, or not, depending) $100 SSD $60 hard drive $15 optical drive $30 case $40 power supply the rest on the video card (or reallocate more to RAM, case, power supply, etc.)
Do you need a hard drive if you have a 120 GB SSD? For streaming, Haswell would help, and you'd definitely want to overclock. If you're waiting until Haswell, obviously can't link actual parts now.
Personally I'd kind of rather skip the SSD (for now) and get a new monitor.

Ok so ive come up with a build but i'm going to need someone (multiple people ideally) to vet the components i've selected.
I'm not sure if i can or should cut corners to get a better CPU or if ym GPU will be adequate. Also im not sure if my mobo, ram, and case and cooler are good choices, or if there are better deals than where ive found these
+ Show Spoiler +
p.s im pretty happy with my current monitor even though it's a bit old. and i don't think i want to wait for a haswell....

I'm not sure about that cooler. Can you find something else, something with a bigger fan, perhaps a bigger Zalman at a good price after rebate? CM Hyper 212+ or 212 Evo would be a safe choice that you might get for a similar price.

Are you ordering from the states?
Those are American retailers that don't ship to Canada and most of those are also American priced. Pricing and availability isn't the same in Canada.

Ahh you're right, i had pc part picker on us mode. here is an updated list but it looks like i need to cut some corners somewhere as it put me over my limit.
+ Show Spoiler +
I left out a video card because im really not sure which one is best, or what i should downgrade to get a better card.

Excellent, so here is the updated list. I'm probably going to start ordering the parts tomorrow and the next day, I still need to select an appropriate GPU and make sure the parts are adequate. Thanks a lot for your help!

I live in Halifax so unfortunately i wont be able to buy your case and PSU lol...
I'm also worried about the quality of that PSU, should i go back to this one http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/rosewill-power-supply-capstone450 ?

The capstone is better, but it's not really $70-instead-of-$25 better (if you count the massive rebate), unless you want it for a specific reason or want really high quality components.
Belial had issues with some of the lower wattage corsair PSU's, but i don't think they are bad, i see them recommended all the time

You linked the 3570, which is $222. 3570K is 230 @ amazon.ca
And + Show Spoiler +PcPartPicker is great and improving. Most of the time, it finds the lowest pricing. It's added some combos for better deals The estimate power consumption is probably the best I've ever seen from a PSU calculator with reasonable breakdowns by component TDPs The guy who owns the site is actually active, takes feedback and improves it. And so many other cool things that actually help people.
But go ahead and keep bashing it instead of taking advantage of it, and scaring newbies away from it because of your blue highlight of authority. This applies to some other regulars around here too. I've praised you before for the good you do, both in public and private, but I strongly disagree with you here.

But... + Show Spoiler +
I think what he meant was pcpartpicker isn't as good [as asking us for the current specials], but it was cut down.

So i just remembered the original reason why i shied away from the i5 3570k in the first place, it has no hyper threading!
Would i be right in my thinking that upgrading to a 3770k would get me better performance per dollar if i am going to be streaming sc2?
If i do go for the 3770k im going to have to save somewhere else. What can be downgraded? Mobo?
Does 8 gigs of ram make a big difference from 4 gigs relevant to my needs?
And i guess if it's worth it to get the 3770k im going to need to find the cheapest GPU possible for low-medium settings...
Here is what i have now, without GPU, 800$ before taxes and after a 30$ rebate (this leaves only 30 dollars for a GPU )
+ Show Spoiler +
What can be done? Is a 3770k too lavish for my budget? What of GPU's!?
Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!
|
I hope I don't say something wrong, but you shouldn't expect anything from HyperThreading. The "interesting" tasks that manage to tax a core will not run well with HT. SC2 does this on one core. The rest of the game and Windows will be managed by a second core. This leaves two cores for compressing the video for streaming which is also something taxing, so won't get better with HT. [EDIT: This last sentence was definitely wrong. It seems to be at least 20 % better with HT.]
For examples of that phenomenon, there are benchmarks that run slower when trying to make use of HT by distributing their work over double the threads. HT is good for a server that runs a lot of parallel processes that don't do anything taxing by themselves.

Wat? Video encoding benefits massively from hyperthreading
It's silly to get a 3770k for streaming though, unless you are trying for extreme settings. 20% more encoding performance doesn't really give you anything, OC'd i5 destroys 1280x720, 60fps / 1920x1080, 30fps stream, and nobody even does >45fps 1920x1080 anyway, which is the only point you would start to notice the HT. Even if you're an extreme user, i would only use over 45fps, even if you had the capability, if you had like 4k or higher upload and was willing to use it, i don't think ive ever seen a legit 1920x1080 stream over 48fps before.
To Flilflam, cut i7 (to i5), get an 830 or 840pro ssd (or crucial m4, if it's cheaper, performance difference is not really large) and "obtain" windows from google somewhere. You're up like $200 and can get a 7770 or even a 7850 and then pocket the $50-100 change. I can't really fault anything else there
|
Interesting... So do you reckon the i5 3570k would be a better choice for my needs? I
'm wondering if the unfeasability of the 3770k build outweighs the benefits of it when sacrificing in GPU...
How would it go over if i just used onboard GFX until i can afford a better GPU?
|
United Kingdom20275 Posts
Onboard graphics is awful, can't really do anything with them. Maybe play on low, i dunno numbers
There's no reason to specifically get the i7, unless you are trying to use extreme settings you literally won't see a difference playing sc2 + streaming on oc'd i5 vs oc'd i7, and you don't have to buy windows so you have a ton of money to get a GPU.
