+ Show Spoiler + CPU: i5 3570k $170 GPU: HD7850 $170 ($155 if I get the XFX instead of the Sapphire) MOBO: ASRock B75M-DGS $60 PSU: CX430W $20 RAM: Patriot Mem. 2x2GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 (already have, might upgrade at different time) HDD: Seagate 5400RPM 2TB (already have, but might upgrade at different time) Case: -taken care of- Optical Drive: -taken care of- I have three ideas in mind: Idea I You guys mentioned that an i3 3220 will be good enough for gaming. If so, how much performance difference will there be between that and the 3570k for games? If I could save me ~$70 from the CPU and then maybe more by buying my MOBO at Microcenter, then I'll use that saved money for an HDD, optical drive, RAM, and a case (OS still taken care of). i3 3220 $100 HD 7850 $170 B75 MOBO $20-$60 2x 4GB 1333/1600 DDR3 RAM $40-$50 HDD $40 (I'll look around, or might have a slow 500GB somewhere) CX430W $20 Case: ~$60 left Total: $500 This will give me a 100% brand new PC, with a nicer looking case. Also, I'll have an extra PC lying around that I might sell, just give to someone else, or keep so that someone else may use. Idea II CPU: i5 3570k $170 GPU: HD7850 $170 MOBO: Z75/Z77 ~$80-$100 HSF: Hyper 212 $30 PSU: CX430W $20 RAM: Patriot Mem. 2x2GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 HDD: Seagate 5400RPM 2TB Case: -taken care of- Optical Drive: -taken care of- Total: $490 Since I'll be getting a Z75 and a HSF, I can overclock the CPU (though I only plan on a slight, one time OC of around ~200 - 400Mhz). However, this means this will be my only PC, and my current PC will be useless (no HDD, no RAM, no optical drive). However, I would have to upgrade my PSU? And my case isn't the greatest so I'll have to use a generic case for an OC PC. Idea III Keep as is (build in spoilers), w/ little to no changes. This means some of my parts will be used and outdated. Total: $420; this leaves me with money for more games, a case, some RAM, or just extra pocket money. So, which build will bring the best performance? Which will be more futureproof? Outside of SC2, LoL, Dota2, SWTOR, and maybe Skyrim, I won't be playing many other demanding PC games, thus I felt that I didn't need to invest in more expensive parts. I'm used to playing on low graphics but for once, I'd like to play max/near max settings on 1080p. It would be a shame to get a gaming PC but end up playing not highly demanding games.

EDIT: Also to the list builders: Did you know the GTX 660 and HD7870 perform around the same and THE GTX 660 COSTS LESS and uses less energy? http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/548?vs=660 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709 4018 600286742&IsNodeId=1&name=PCI Express 3.0 x16&Order=PRICE&Pagesize=100

The Mushkin is $169 + $10 shipping (and can probably price match too). I think it's pretty cheap. Tbh I prefer a smaller ssd but then I heard the speeds are slower. Anyway, my main concern is the psu though. Will 450W be enough with a good margin of safety?

The 450W is plenty, but you'll need to use a molex -> PCIe power adapter that comes with the graphics card. If you're looking through an old build, don't take any particular recommendation too seriously at it's probably just whatever was cheap at the time.

I think I got lucky on my monitor, I've tried my hardest and have only found 1 dead pixel. The stand wobbles way too easy. 1080p is owning my graphics card, on low/med in SC2 I'm only averaging 30FPS once I get any kind of army. The case is nice and I like that it doesn't have tool free crap. Having front USB and audio finally is nice. I noticed the Power LED and HDD activity LED are white so I popped in my LED fan on the side panel (with a custom made extension). Looks nice. Also my CPU load temps dropped from 67C (technically overheating, Tjunction is 60C) to 59C, 8C nice. CPU fan doesn't go past 83%. GPU temps dropped 5C. Every case fan location is filled except the 120mm bottom intake but I'm not going to put one in as all my excess cables lay in the way. Thanks Myrmidon for the suggestions. Although I just realized I got the Source 210 and not the 220 you pointed out. lol. ![]() EDIT: I can't seem to find the dead pixel anymore, so either it works now or I'm blind.

Not so sure about running so many fans like that, especially without dust filters. Have fun cleaning. At least Asus realizes the stand sucks and gives you a VESA mount, I guess. Also don't know if one dead pixel is lucky, but it's not unlucky?

It was just because the cheap BitFenix stuff isn't/wasn't available on newegg, HAF 912 and other options weren't on sale, etc. NZXT can be pretty plasticky. You think it's okay enough as a budget case? Bends easily or not? No problems to report? I think the tool-free features on many cases are flimsy enough that I'd use screws anyway, but some people would take their absence as a negative rather than a positive. Not so sure about running so many fans like that, especially without dust filters. Have fun cleaning. At least Asus realizes the stand sucks and gives you a VESA mount, I guess. Also don't know if one dead pixel is lucky, but it's not unlucky? The lowest 3.5" mount is slightly too low to stash your excess sata cable underneath the hdd. When I was installing the standoffs the motherboard tray would bow. The case comes with an insane amount of screws (>60), all black, however only 4! are fan ones so I have ugly silver ones in most locations. The fan that comes with the case is the quietest one in my case and it feels like it's moving the most air. The power and reset switches are short action. It feels sturdy once everything is in so I have no qualms about build quality. Very excellent for its $40 price. Only cons I have is that the top of the motherboard is crazy close to the top of the case and there is no cable management hole for the CPU power. No chance to put any type of watercooling whatsoever. I don't think you can fit 38mm thick fans anywhere. I also wish the NZXT logo was more visible, looking straight at it in low/med light I can't see it. NZXT only provides 2 zip ties. Oh and the fact is ONLY comes with 1 fan. I'm only rocking a 92mm CPU cooler (TX3) and there is barely any space (~15mm) between the top of the CPU cooler and the bottom of the fans. ![]()

You also won't be spending anywhere near $1500 when you do not need an operating system, only using a 1080p monitor, and not overclocking. It's only going to be about $700 give or take for the configuration alone.

Oh bf3 at 1440p with 4xAA runs 1 fps better on the 8350! It must be betterrr. Not to mention the horrible inconsistencies, like the 3570k being at 25fps or something in crysis when the 3770k/3820/8350 were all at 35 or something. Did he forget the heatsink? I think all he proved was that he needs a more concise testing procedure, that he doesn't know shit about setting up xsplit properly, and that maxing every single graphical setting on a midrange card is not a useful test for the cpu.

$159 3570k@MC $109 z77 UD3h@MC (yea i know, i made a stink about p67/z68, but the $40 bundle deal MC has, makes the argument irrelelvant, if i wasnt close to MC, or best buy who prices matches mc for that matter, i would probably get some p67/z68) $17 NZXT Source 210. As I understand it, this case is better than the Gamma, so seems awesome. Wish it had a clear panel on the side though, maybe ill mod it (certainly saved the money to do so), or see a case at MC that I like better. For RAM: Crucial Ballstix Tactical Tracer 1600CL8 1.5v 2x2gb $17 after 10% discount promo code (expiring tonight!) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148513 I see so many people say "just get 8gb bro, youll never use more than 4gb" but that's $25 more expensive. While $25 might not seem a lot.... for an extra $25 on top of that, I can get an i7. So what's better, 50% the cost of Hyper Threading or i7 vs i5, or 8gb of ram? Yea, I thought so. 8gb of ram is retarded to buy, i dont know why it comes recommended so much.... Anyways, enough bashing everyone. im asking for help here, or more like a review, since i know what im doing, but maybe you guys have seen a better deal somewhere. PSU: The CX 430 for $19 at newegg is sick. The CX 430 Modular for $24 (it will be $24, i got the email already on what the shellshocker price will be at 3pm pst, and it's $24) is also sick. I kinda want a 12v@42a+ PSU, so I can sli my 460's in the near future (or 480s or something, maybe, whatever, dont worry about it), but I'd only get it if it was under $50. However, there's a modular CX 600 on the egg for $59. A great price too, but that's basically $40 more expensive. For $10 more, I could get an i7 instead, so alas, ill just buy a psu for SLI if I ever do SLI in the far future. not now. Also, I'm thinking of maybe just buying 2 x 430's (would probably have to go modular if I stick 2x PSUs in my case lol). Hell, that'd be a lot more power, and cheaper, then the CX 600w anyways. There's ways to easily run a 2nd psu in the system. man that'd take so much load off the system too. like dedicate a cx 430 to the gpu, and then cpu.... wow. id have zero ripple ever lol. anyways. maybe at MC ill see some refurb or something, im not really confused on that. NH-D14, 80gb SSD x25-m g2 as my entire system storage (only used 40gb in 2 years on my hdd, and HOTS will only be an additional 8gb, so ill be fine), and GTX 460 768mb (at 922mhz, its a very good gpu, more than powerful enough for my needs like sc2, and the 768mb vram never gets maxed out on sc2 or the stuff i do, plus i prefer 768mb vs 1gb, since it overclocks further, the 192bit bus never gets anywhere over 20% either).... for $328. For an extra $50 I could get the i7. not sure if even with streaming sc2 and high end overclocks id ever need that over an i5, but if i were to upgrade anywhere, it'd be that.
