Why GTX 465 really sucks
The GTX 465 is a severely crippled Fermi that lacks everything good about Fermi, and retains everything bad about Fermi. It performs around the level of the HD 5830 yet sucks up the power of a GTX 470 and outputs the same heat as the GTX 470. It is an overcrippled GPU that has no chance of competing with the competitively priced HD 5850 or even the relatively disappointing HD 5830. Along with its extremely high price of $280 at launch, there was no reason to purchase the GTX 465. While GTX 465 prices have dropped to more reasonable $240 or $250 ranges, the recently released GTX 460 1GB at $230 often provides the same if not better performance without the heat output and power requirements at a lower price point.
Now if i were to be able to get the fermi 465 for $145, would it still be bad? Say I could get the the fermi 460 for $155. would i still want to get the latter?

Help please My brother decided he wanted to build himself a computer without telling any of us. Together my family got him a laptop and someone spoiled the surprise to him. Unfortunately, he had already purchased several parts and no longer needs them, and I thought I might try to finish it. However, I don't really know anything about building computers so I am very confused. Here is what he has purchased so far:
Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H 890GX CrossFireX Motherboard AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze 520W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
I don't really know how to figure out which parts are compatible and how well they match in terms of how well they run. I see I still need a cd drive, a hard disk, GPU?, a keyboard/mouse, graphics card, a sound card?, a monitor, and RAM. I don't know if the parts I already have even work together, but I assume the motherboard + psu work because he got them in a bundled deal, and I don't see why they wouldn't fit in the case/not compatible with the power supply. I plan on using the computer mainly for gaming/web surfing. Games like SC2, L4D2, maybe HoN, and maybe new games when they come out. I am not sure how much I want to spend on the rest of the parts. I am looking for a midrange sort of computer, enough to play the games I want and possibly those yet to come. I am not sure what resolution I will use, right now on my old laptop I have 1280x800 (but i think the resolution changes when I play games), but I plan on getting a monitor for the new computer. I want to know if I should purchase the rest of the parts (online) before or after christmas, so I haven't had too much time to research how I should be doing this/reading this thread. I don't plan on Over Clocking, and I think I can get an OS (win7 prob) from my school, but I don't know how to get that onto a new computer. I don't think I will upgrade for a while since I really don't know how to do much right now.
So if anyone could point me out where to learn about what is compatible with what, and point out some parts that would go well with what I already have, I would be very grateful. Also, should I finish shopping before or after christmas for online stores? There is so much I need to learn and I want to finish before christmas break ends in a few weeks. Thanks very much

If you cant even figure out how to install a OS, thats not a very good sign for you to try building your own PC... Learn the fundamentals first even though its so easy nowadays, even the configurations are streamlined.

Athlon II X2s are built on dual core dies and therefore will not unlock :p

Motherfucker! Lol, w/e.
Ninja: I didn't have any more budget to expend and there was nothing left to skimp on. Monitor was 80 + 15 shipping, HD was 35 + 7 shipping. Motherboard was 65 and combo deal'd for 15 off. Didn't want to skimp on the mobo too much.

Now you've got me wondering how the CM Elite PSUs stack up with the Rosewill freebies that come with some of their cases. Here's a review of the Elite Power 460W, but I dunno about the lower-end Rosewills.
That's a lot of fans to cool an Athlon II X2, lol.

Hey I'm trying to build a new desktop for Starcraft 2. My goal is to be able to play relatively lag-less (if I'm getting 15 fps in an endgame battle and my cursor is still moving smoothly then I'm fine with that) while streaming. I threw together a quick build on Newegg, but I don't really know what I'm looking for. I don't have a specific budget, but the less I spend the better.
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=21862888
I already have a Mid-ATX tower, but I forget what it is right now and I can't check because it's in a different state.
There is no PSU because I honestly have no idea what I'm looking for in a PSU.
Everything on there I'm willing to change. The monitor I picked is 1680 x 1050 but it isn't that important to me. I'd be fine with getting a smaller monitor, but everything else I saw was 5ms response time. Is that bad? Or would it be a completely unnoticeable difference. Also, if the CPU or GFX card is beyond what I need feel free to recommend a different one
Thanks to anyone who helps <3

@Najda
Samsung F3 1TB is better and less expensive than the Western Digital drive you selected.
You want to select a dual channel memory kit (2x2gb) as the P55 platform only uses dual channel.
There are better video cards than the 5850 for $200. You can buy a MSI GTX 460 Hawk for $159.

Allegedly, other dies have been sold as athlon ii x2s. I certainly wouldn't buy one expecting to get something other than a regor though.

Awesome, thanks for the help!

Uh, you've got DDR2 RAM there, which in incompatible with your system. You need DDR3 RAM like this or this. The second is slightly more expensive, but it has heatspreaders, slightly better specs that you wouldn't be taking advantage of unless you're overclocking, and more reviews.
The M12II 520W is better than the VX550 actually, but both would be great (and overkill for those specific parts). If you don't plan on heavy upgrading, you could just use a Neo Eco 400W. You'd need to use a molex to PCI-E adapter for that unit though (included with the GPU), since the GTX 460 requires two and that PSU only has one. Go with the M12II if you're interested in paying more for slightly higher performance, 5 year warranty, modular cables, more capacity, etc.
Just as a friendly reminder, Intel's next-gen CPUs are going to be available around January 9th. As a very rough estimate, they should be priced about the same as their current lineup while being maybe 20-35% faster? (combining effects from greater instructions per clock and higher clock speeds) i.e. they will be better than any CPU currently on the market--except maybe Intel's $1000 hex cores--at maintaining high fps in late-game scenarios. If you're in no hurry to upgrade, you might as well wait. If not, it's not a huge deal, and you can just go ahead.

Does this look about right such that nothing is really overpowered/underpowered for the rest of the system? https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=12971611 + Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H 890GX CrossFireX Motherboard AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze 520W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Nice catch - didn't see that it was DDR2, figured that since the price drop in DDR3 everyone just bought DDR3... and to think I was about to approve of his build...

Empty wishlist there, might want to fix that.
