Well, the 840 is cheaper. May as well give it a go.

Hi guys,
What would you buy from the black friday deals (newegg, tiger, etc) if you were building a new computer for gaming <$1k? Sorry if this has been asked before :<
Thanks!

Some memory, a Seasonic X or Seasonic G 550, and Samsung 840 or 840 Pro.

This is the first year I was paying attention and it seemed like the only one to go on sale anywhere was the 560TI. Maybe they don't really ever go on sale for black fridays. Guess I'll wait till monday and hope for something better.

iirc, a lot of nice sales come on Monday.

Cyber Monday is mostly just recycled Black Friday sales (aka a marketing scam). Most of the good items have already been sold out, eg. Intel 330 180gb for $100, Samsung 830 128gb for $70. If you're expecting something amazing from Cyber Monday than you are most likely going to be in for disappointment.
GPUs have never been a big item for Black Friday.

Good to know, thanks.

Hey guys I just got a laptop and was wondering if you could give me your impressions of it - did I get ripped off? It was Dell Outlet New, which somehow is different from refurbished - supposed to have no blemishes at all.
Dell Inspiron 15r special edition -$740 USD edit: this was pretax. Came out to $810 after tax. -i7 3612QM -8gb ram ddr3 @ 1600mHz -1tb hd @ 5400rpm sata II -32gb ssd msata daughterboard -amd 7730 2gb graphics -1080p screen -backlit keyboard -bluray drive -standard 1yr factory warranty + got it on amex card that extends it for a yr It was between this, the Lenovo Y580, and the ASUS N56VM. However both those laptops were $900 (pretax) for the best deals I could find for them (that weren't sold out - there was a Y580 deal for $800pretax that was sold out). Also, fuck my luck but the Microsoft Store was selling XPS 15 for $700pretax, naturally out of stock by the time I noticed. Side note about wtf Microsoft Store randomly having such a sick deal!?
What I really wanted was a 1080p screen and ok graphics. Lenovo had better graphics (660m nvidia) but I don't game at all outside SC2 so didn't want to bite the extra $160 for it. All I really do is SC2, internet, and code (college cs major so mainly java/c++). I figured with these graphics I could def. run SC2 fine on low settings (no desire to go above low, just want lag free 2v2s). I'm also hoping the SSD provides some marginal benefits - I'm not entirely sure if Windows is installed on the SSD or if I even can - it's described as a daughterboard. Maybe it just caches the program files I run most on the SSD? Anyone know? I was planning on doing a clean install of Windows 8 when I got it and hoped to put it on the SSD. We'll see.
So - overall decent value? If not I'll just return and wait lol.

I wouldn't really recommend 840. A lot shorter lifespan than 830 and it has some serious issues regenerating after trim.

Well AMD enduro is like a billion times worse than optimus, but as far as performance per value goes, it's pretty good, although I heard battery life on inspiron is meh.
Edit: I love phone spell correct.

So NCIX had the gtx 570 on sale for $185 CAD and I've been planning on upgrading my 2 year old desktop for a long time. But since I don't really know anything about computers I'd like to ask TL for some help. :D
gtx 570 link: http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=58573&vpn=012-P3-1571-KR&manufacture=eVGA&promoid=1030
Current specs: + Show Spoiler + GPU: nvidia gts 250 CPU: i5 750 @2.67GHz RAM: 4gb, not sure about speed Mobo: P55M-UD2 OS: W7 Resolution: 1680x1050
1) Is it compatible with my motherboard? 2) Is it worth it upgrading to the 570 while not changing any other components?
It's really tempting considering I've been holding back on buying any newer games as they run like crap on my current desktop...
E: I won't be doing any overclocking
|
That's $185 CAD... not particularly great compared to the 7850 and 7870.
Yes, it's compatible with your motherboard. Most (all) modern GPUs use PCIe x16 which your motherboard has.
A GTX 570 is sort of unnecessary for your resolution but yes, a GPU upgrade would be worthwhile if you want to play the newer games.
|
Alright, gonna be picking it up tomorrow then. Thanks skyr!

What is your budget?
$700
What is your resolution?
Already have the monitor. 1920 x 1080
What are you using it for?
SC2, League, and some video editing/capture.
What is your upgrade cycle?
3+
When do you plan on building it?
ASAP
Do you plan on overclocking?
If I can fit the 3570k into the budget.
Do you need an Operating System?
Yes. Windows 7
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No.
Where are you buying your parts from?
Preferably Amazon due to employee discount, but not opposed to Newegg/Tigerdirect etc

Hey TL, I'm a Student on a budget, in the UK looking at building a PC mainly for playing and recording (using fraps) Starcraft 2. If possible within my budget the ability to do a bit of streaming would be awesome but I think that might be a stretch.
What is your budget?
~ £400
What is your resolution?
1366x768 (although I need a new monitor so this is flexible if it needs to be.)
What are you using it for?
Mainly Starcraft, and recording of gameplay via fraps. (streaming would be great as well but maybe a pipe dream on my budget)
What is your upgrade cycle?
1-2 years, probably nearer 2
When do you plan on building it?
Before the new year
Do you plan on overclocking?
No intention to.
Do you need an Operating System?
No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No
Where are you buying your parts from?
I'm in the UK, probably online.
Thanks for any help guys.

Hey, I'm planning on buying new CPU to replace my AMD Bulldozer CPU because its unstable performance during gaming. So I'm asking is i5-3570K the best choice for reasonably priced CPU or is there better one at similar price range? I have GTX560ti SLI (OC'd) and 8GB of DDR3 on my rig. I use my computer for Photoshopping and gaming mostly.
And what motherboard should I go for? Any recommendations?

I would just get some ~$100 Z77 motherboard like the ASRock Z77 Pro3 or ASUS P8Z77. The more you spend on a motherboard, the more you'll have to tell in advance if you need additional PCIe, USB 2.0/3.0, SATA connectors.

Besides the fact that it looks gimmicky... I don't know... why?
