Not plugging in the monitor/hdd won't stop the computer from booting.

I know, but people have different definitions of "not booting." I don't know his skill level. Not getting an image while the computer waits for instructions is not unusual description of such an event.

Page 1-22 shows the power connectors.
Page 1-25 shows the connections to the power button. Make sure the PWRSR is connected correctly.

Could you clarify exactly what happens? Is it that nothing happens when you try to start or does fans start spinning and such if you press the on button?

Did you install the standoff screws for the motherboard in the case?

If you have everything connected correctly (power, front panel connectors, standoff screws and so on) it could be a bad psu. If you have a spare psu, you could try connecting that one.

I have to go to lunch now but I'm sure there are other people here that can help you. You can also check this thread for some suggestions:

Good luck.

A good way to check is to jump the headers for the power switch with a screwdriver.

That can ensure that you don't have an issue with the case.

Hey ya'll! I'm helping my friend get a computer after he posted on FB a link asking if a computer was good...

Overpriced Cyberpower PC from Newegg Canada ( I don't know why he was on the canada site).

So I told him it was an emergency that he stop looking at prebuilts and I'd help him put it together. (That was after the usual "I can't I don't know about computers bla bla blah"). So I'm looking to optimize a build for a computer that's around $800-900 and this is what I've come up with.

Case Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower $50

Motherboard BIOSTAR H77MU3 LGA 1155 Intel H77 $80

CPU Intel Core i5-3550 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo) $210

GPU VisionTek 900505 Radeon HD 7850 $250

PSU Antec EarthWatts Green EA-430D Green 430W $40
Model #:EA-430D Green

RAMG.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 $40

HDD Samsung by Seagate Spinpoint F3 $80

PCIe Wireless adapter. $17

CD-DVDr LG $18

Is the PSU enough?

What about this one. Looks flashier. Rosewill?

He's more of a "I don't care what it costs" rather than a "I want to save $15 by going to MicroCenter" kind of guy but I may go there for him for the CPU and other cost saving things.

I saw the combo for the MoBo but it wouldn't add to a wishlist that I could send to him. Will adjust.

You may as well toss in an SSD if the price is not critical, since that would be a legitimate upgrade that he would actually notice.

edit: combos can't be added to wish lists afaik

I agree. I may put that on there for a boot drive. He WANTED to be as low as possible but... it'll be rad to have an SSD. Even a 60ishGb.

Hello, I would appreciate input for my computer build. If you can spare some time to advise me--that would be great!

My budget for this computer is about $1200 excluding the monitor. If I can get it down closer to $1000 that would be great.

I plan to run at 1920x1200. I will probably get the Dell UltraSharp U2412M.

I will use the computer mostly for gaming. I am a Computer Science major so I will probably end up coding on it some.

I plan on a very long upgrade cycle. 4 or 5 years.

I plan on building the computer in the next few weeks. I had been waiting on the Ivy Bridge processors and the new NVIDIA cards.

I do plan on overclocking. I've not done it before--but I'm pretty sure there is plenty of information on the internet for me to find out how.

I do not need an operating system.

I don't think I need SLI unless you can convince me so. Maybe at a later date?

I'll probably buy almost all of my parts from newegg.

Now that that is out of the way:
Processor: I think I want the new Ivy Bridge i5. I do some rendering but don't wanna dish out the cash for hyperthreading.
Motherboard: I don't know.
RAM: What is good? Probably 8 gigs. But what brand?
GPU: Probably the NVIDIA GTX 680. Is there a problem with that?
Case: I've had people tell me that full tower can be nice just for the extra room and airflow. I know I definitely am willing to spend an extra $50 or so in this department for something "cool." I'll show you links of what I've been looking at below. If you really don't think full tower is necessary--at least the links will show you the style of case I'm looking at. I like smooth or a little exotic. Lian li is nice. I don't particularly like side windows if it can be helped.
NXZT Zero 2
Rosewill THOR V2
NXZT Phantom
Cooler Master HAF 932
Lian Li PC-A70F
PSU: What is good?
Heatsink/Fan: I think I will want an aftermarket heatsink and fan. I want my computer as cool as possible. What can you recommend?
Hard Drive: I have 12 TB of external backup so I want something smallish in this. Maybe 500GB to 1TB at 7,200 RPM.
DVD Drive: I'll need something. I can install windows easily from a flash drive but I will still need the disc drive.
Keyboard/Mouse: I'll handle that on my own. I have razer mice and will buy a keyboard.

Thank you very much for you time in helping me with this.

I will check back for replies as often as I can but it may be up to 6 hours. I can't afford to sit here and F5 the page all day

Thanks!

Your budget does not allow for a GTX 680 and Ivybridge.

A full tower case is not necessary for a basic configuration and a full tower case does not always equate to better airflow. If you're a fan of Lian Li than I'm guessing you're looking for a minimalist design such as a Corsair 550D and Fractal Design Define R3, Antec P280 may be anaother option.

This is $1228 before mail in rebates and all other applicable fees:

If you want to reduce the total, you can simply remove either the SSD or HDD. Since you already have 12TB of storage, there shouldn't be much need for another HDD though. Another option is getting a less expensive case than the Corsair 550D. If you want Ivybridge & Kepler, you can't lower the total much further on Newegg.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I don't really want a SSD, so would you advise putting the money saved from that towards the 680 over the 670?

My budget is flexible. I will spend $1,400 if I think I'm making a solid computer that will be competitive for a while.

Thanks also for the input on the cases. I will go for a mid-tower then.

You can take a look at reviews and decide whether a GTX 680 is worth it or not. Here's two: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818 and http://techreport.com/articles.x/22922

The answer would be no from me. An SSD is easily worth it over having a GTX 680 instead of a 670.

The problem right now with the GTX 680 is that it's near impossible to find it in stock.

Ok so I finally got my computer built. Big thaks to everyone who helped me I am very grateful.

Going to overclock it later. Just wanted to check a few things. I am altering the base mutiplier from 3.3 to 4.5. Do I need to alter voltages to keep them below 1.5 or will it do this automatically? Is there something else I need to do other then that. I will nerd it now and see if I can find out but help would be appriciated.

If you just change the multiplier and leave voltages on auto, you'll have to monitor them with programs such as HWMonitor and CPU-Z. Note that this may or may not be a stable overclock. Above a certain point, only manual voltages and other tweaks will keep a chip stable, but 45 might be okay. Either run like 20 passes of IBT/LinX followed by a long session of Prime95, or just use the PC (this only gives you a low degree of certainty though, even if you use it for a few weeks). You'll know if it's unstable when you crash

The voltage will depend on the quality of your motherboard as well as on the luck of the draw on the quality of the CPU. If your motherboard has an "offset" voltage option, you may be able to use a negative voltage offset if you find it's stable with less voltage than what the automatic setting gives under load. This requires stress testing of course. And you want to find the lowest possible stable voltages for the purposes of reduced heat/power draw and possibly extended CPU lifespan.

1.5 is very high. I'd stay under 1.4 personally for 24/7 operation.
