Would appreciate any input on the below build which is primarily for Diablo 3. Max budget is around $600 including Windows 7. Is my PSU wattage sufficient? Thanks!

@Doodsmack. Your CPU doesn't fit the mobo, you want an 1155 socket CPU, probably an i3 2100. You want an H61 motherboard, not Z68. Ditch the blu-ray for DVD unless you really need blu-ray, that'll save you a pile. The PSU is enough. Upgrade to a real GPU, though, like a GTS 450 or HD 6770. The cash saved off the motherboard should cover that.
Oh, but you can probably get a decent 430-450w PSU for similar cost, so why not? 350 might not be enough if you upgrade to a higher end GPU down the line.
|
What's the difference between H61 and Z68 motherboards? There are only 3 H61s on Newegg that are ATX...
Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the tips.
Z68 has a metric fuckton of features you're not using, like the ability to OC (not really in your budget with needing OS), SSD caching, which requires an SSD and is kind of a silly gimmick for most people, integrated graphics, which you're not using...
See a trend here? You'd be dumping a ton of money on features you literally aren't buying components to use.
Also, an ATX mid or full tower can generally take an mATX mobo if it's cheaper.

Change the case to something like a HAF912 as well. It's more up to date than the Antec 300.

Ignoring the compatibility issue and the miscalculation of the total (unless there are coupons / promos which you didn't mention), your build basically sucks.
BP350 isn't an attractive option at $40 given what is available at this price point currently.
Caviar Green should not be used as a primary drive.
Antec Three Hundred is overpriced at $70 and you should not be severely sacrificing performance for the case.
Memory is overpriced.
6450 sucks.
Not sure why you need a blu-ray player for Diablo III.
For $490, this is miles better (not including wireless or optical drive). Basically the same price as your configuration when you add the wireless and blu-ray:

Oooh, nice promo code on the 6850.

I've been thinking a while about getting a low-power home server. I'll use it as a NAS and for personal coding (mostly web site) projects, so I figure it doesn't have to be very powerful, and I'd like it to use least power idle, which it will be most of the time.
I have a 200W brick power supply and a mini-ITX case (single 40mm fan) with really shitty ventilation to start with, as well as an extra stick of ram lying around.
I'll probably stick an SSD in it. The real question is what mobo/cpu to get for it. I've seen reports of people getting 12W idle with an i3 2100t and some mobo I don't remember, but the 2100t isn't available in Korea. Similar numbers can be seen for atom and zacate systems, and they can probably handle all-passive cooling, even with shit ventilation.
Will I see a difference at all between Atom and Zacate? Would an i3 under load overheat? Any existing resources I can consult?

I'm using Windows Home Server with a dual core Athlon II and its by far good enough for all of my media needs. This is what you want to use it for right? Most NAS will be using a weaker processor than a modern day Atom or Zacate so they would definitely work. The largest small businesses NAS systems typically use Atoms and I really doubt you'll be serving 20+ people in a home sever.
A good resource is Small Net Builder. A lot of the time, depending on the scale of your home sever, a prebuilt Synology, QNAP, or Dlink system will be cheaper, less obtrusive, and easier to use.

@BottleAbuser
Put in a Pentium G530 or G620 if that's not available. Or G620T if you want to save ~1-2W at idle lol

Consider a cheap add-in sound card like a Xonar DG if you're going to play BF3. Or be ready to buy one later if you don't use a USB headset.
There's a bug that will never be fixed, where Punkbuster, Realtek HD Audio, BF3, and some unknown variable will cause lockups. The only solution I know of is to use USB audio or an add-in card so you can disable Realtek if you happen to get the bug.

Agree with most of this, very close to my rig. You need to install 2 ram chips for dual channel memory, so either get 2 of those nice 4GB Gskills, or find a 2x2GB kit.
Never skimp on your PSU, always a good idea to have extra wattage, don't want your PSU running full blast the whole time. Neo Eco 520C @ $60, 20bucks more than earthwatts for an extra 100watts on the 12V rail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371030
Or Neo Eco 620C @ $70 for even more power, about another 90watts over the 520C (My current psu, but I did get it for 55) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371031
The marketing schemes for Power supplies are unreal, always check wattage on the 12V rail, live by this database http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page541.htm
|
Earthwatts 430D is more than sufficient for a measly configuration. Spending money on a 520C or 620C would just be dumb.
|
Your power supply is your engine, the more headroom you have, the less your psu is stressed, lower temp, longer life, all im sayin. Neo ecos are made by Seasonic as well.
