Using the help I was given above I went to ncix.com and put together the following. I'm hoping its good enough that its future proofed. Can someone look it over and give an opinion. I read reviews on the GTX 460 and it seems to be the best value for $. Let me know what you think.
Again, my goal is to run SC2 at its best, and also use this as a media center pc - Bluray eventually, HD/1080p video etc.
Everything came to $930.00 including HST (shipping wasn't quoted yet) I would expect I am in and around $1k for this build all in. I am using windows xp right now and will try to continue using it if i can, if not I will grab Win 7.

LOL Thanks.
With that combo can I do what I intended?
ie: SC2 on Ultra and using the pc as a media center for 1080p video?
I would never need more then one video card, and I am not sure what the benefits of HT(hyperthreading?) are.
For what I want to do, is that necessary?

I'm looking for something cheap. Found a $300 off coupon for an inspiron 580 at dell but it expires today so fast responses would be appreciated!
The major concern seems to be the Radeon 5450, not a powerful gaming card but would it run SC2 on medium decently? I'm on a pretty tight budget. According to one of the links in the OP the CPU is generally the bottleneck on medium graphics.
Raedeon 5450 512MB was ranked 109th on the rankings thread (no mention of the 1GB model) which is pretty rough, but I really just need a cheap computer that can run the game somewhat decently.
Here's the specs: $700cdn for.. Intel® Core™ i5-750 processor(8MB Cache, 2.66GHz) 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 2 DIMMs 1TB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3
Anybody have experience with the 5450? Will it run the game on medium graphics? I can live without going up to high or ultra until I can afford to swap it out for a better card.

The 5450 does not bench well at all. True, dropping to medium graphics will help, but looking at the graphs myself I am really not convinced. It is struggling to compete with cards from the value-segment of 2008. The other issue is that I really have doubts about off-the-shelf boxes having sufficient circulation for more serious GPUs.
*just took a look at the case for the Inspiron 580 and that confirmed my initial suspicions. Looks to be poor circulation, which is not good when you are trying to upgrade to better GPUs.

What do you recommend for an i7 930 Core? I was thinking something not too expensive, but can't really decide. I am interested in overclocking 24/7 ...
|
Art.Feel what do you mean by recommend? Recommend a GPU? A motherboard? Heatsink?

Ah really sorry, sorry! I forgot to write that I was thinking of a motherboard

Hrm, I would go for a Gigabyte X58 UD3R since it's a cheaper motherboard around ~$200 (not sure Euro), or an ASUS P6X58D-E which is going to be a bit more expensive (around $230?)

Was thinking the same, I also read at the reviews that GB x58 UD3R offers better cloaking capabilites

A few questions, I hope this is the right thread.
The questions has been answered.
Thanks for the help, Demise.

hello!
i want to upgrade my current system so i can play sc2 in high quality. i have a hp xw4300 workstation with the following stoneage specs:
pentium4 ht 3,40 ghz 4 gb ddr2 ram radeon hd 4650 hp motherboard 775 socket
i can play 1v1 with lowest settings with almost zero hiccups. but i do get hiccups in 2v2, single player, etc.
i was thinking of getting a intel pentium e6300 for 66€ or a core 2 duo e7600 for 113€. what do you guys recommend? i would also need a fitting motherboard because my current motherboard is quite old and wont support newer cpus. what are good ones that dont cost a fortune? and what about the graphics card? should i get a new one? not sure if just a cpu upgrade would be enough.
thanks for any recommendations!

I wouldn't waste any money on last-gen hardware (anything Core2, or Phenom1's). I also would avoid cache-castrated models, which are a bit too popular with the AMD chips (Athlon II X4's and similar). The absolute minimum I would recommend is the Phenom II X3 720, but otherwise, get a i5 750 or better.
I don't know the Germany hardware retailers, so hopefully the prices aren't too different overseas.

Anyone, please tell me what should be upgraded first and what it should be upgraded with. Here are my specs. I don't want to spend more than $100.
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz Memory: 4.00 GB System type: 64-bit operating system Intel(R) G45/G43 Express Chipset

what's your gpu? can't really give a recommendation without knowing that

Hey all, I'm hardcore laptop shopping and I'd love it if you could tell me how these graphics cards run.
I'll typically be looking for i5-450M or 520M with 4GB DDR3.
How do these perform? nVidia GeForce GT 330M, 335M, 325M ATI 5650 ATI 5470 (Probably can't cut it from what I've read)
Or, if you can name some other low-mid level graphics cards that I didn't hit on that can play SC2 on Medium I'm all ears. Thank you all in advance!
|
The 5650 is the best of them. the GT 330M is a bit worse than the 5650.
|
Do you know if the 325M will be able to muscle through on Medium settings?
|
I currently have a laptop (Dell XPS m1530) and it really only allows me to play SC2 on low if I want any sort of playability 4v4 and decent fps in 1v1. I'm looking to get either a new laptop that can handle SC2 on a little higher setting or a decent desktop system since they are cheaper and more efficient.. any suggestions for best / price worthy system for this? I liked the look of the desktops they had setup at the gosucamp thing.
|
If you read through this thread you'll see a lot of computer builds (for desktops) that have a pretty wide price range and desire for performance, most of which are geared towards SC2
whoops
