Desiring to purchase a decent gaming PC on a budget but not knowing how to build one myself, I managed to find a refurbed HP comp for just $800 that seems to work great so far.
Specs: i7-920 processor currently at stock speed 9 gigs of DDR3 ram (on Windows 7 64-bit, of course) 7200 RPM hard drive GTX 260 (192 core edition unfortunately, though oddly it has 1.8 gigs of Vram) Edit: Forgot to mention I'm running on a 1920x1080 resolution
I have not played the SC2 beta but plan to purchase SC2 at release. Obviously the graphics card is the only real concern here. Can it:
Run Ultra in 4v4 or complex UMS maps? Run Ultra in most other situations? If so, at what framerates, and how great is the difference between 30 and 60? If not, what must be turned down?
Thanks very much for your help.
I have pretty much similar system, just HD4890 card, which is pretty much ~GTX260.
I have no problems most of time in all games unless there is huge battles, no matter it's 1v1 or 4v4. In huge battles it sometimes drops to ~15fps for few seconds. I don't know maybe it is ATI problem, or maybe I need to overclock my CPU, which I would suggest for you too.
Anyway 30fps ir 60fps ir not that big difference, but lower than 25 really bad.

uhhh. Waded through a few pages. Cant find anything mobile related. what is the mobile gpu that will hold minimum 30fps at 720p??

Computer is about 4-5 years old, can BARLEY run SC2 Beta on lowest possible settings. Want to upgrade for use as a Media Center and also for gaming. Wanting to run SCT on Ultra. Will this do the trick and can it be done cheaper? Have I gone wrong somewhere? New to this.... Anyway to get this more towards $1000 and still play on ultra at a steady framerate?
Also, from Canada so only using Canadian websites.

@s0ftHanDs
5830 is a bad choice, get the gtx 460 as it performs better and costs only around $200 on ncix
and the corsair 400w psu is only $29 after rebate on ncix as well.
basically everything on your list is cheaper on ncix.. honestly dont know where you shopping at if you are from canada since ncix and their sister sites are the best places to shop at for computer parts.

@skyR
Thanks for the help. I am going to check it out.
What are your thoughts on the CPU - i would like to be able to play 1080p videos as well.
|
Any modern CPU can run 1080p videos without a hitch so nothing to worry about there.
|
|
GTX460 is better price/performance, and as of late performs a ton better in sc2 then any ATI card due to ATI bunk drivers so far. A 460 can provide more then enough over 60fps when paired with a proper cpu like the one you listed.
|
@skyR
Checked out the gtx460 - it is cheaper, but is also 768MB vs. 1GB ram on the 5830. I chose the 5830 almost randomly (it was middle of the pack on the Tom's Hardware SC2 benchmark for Ultra).
So for CPU, I can drop down it an i3 or i5?

Thanks for the help all. Will read all that tomorrow. Glad I checked with you guys first, had no clue you need DDR3 for the i3/5/7 CPU's.
I'm finding it very confusing (as i really don't know what the difference are in equipment)

I dont understand why people want to play RTS's on their labtop. And if you got a MAC Desktop, holy crap am I going to hope that you pray to whatever deity you trust in to forgive you for committing such a sin.
But there's also the off chance that you're kidding.

Some people don't have a ton of money to have multiple comps and need a lap-top for work/vacation/travel/school/transportation like me. Just because your life doesn't have the need for one doesn't mean that everyone who does is stupid. Also, a mac, if the guy was serious, can run the game if it is the Mac Book Pro and either 2009-2010 edition, otherwise not really.

What do you think about this configuration. Will it run SC2 on ultra, also I wanna smooth big fights even in 4v4. Yeah, I would like this one to run 3D modeling programs like Katia and others video editing, streaming programs,... The configuration I made comes out about 400€.
Processor AMD Phenom II X4 925 BOX, s. AM3, 2.8GHz, 8 MB c., HTT
Motherboard ASROCK 870 Extreme3, AMD 870/SB850, DDR3, zvuk, S-ATA, RAID, G-LAN, CrossFireX, PCI-E, USB 3.0, ATX, s. AM3
Memory PC-10600, 2 GB CORSAIR VS2GB1333D3 Value series, DDR3 1333MHz x2
Hard disck 1000.0 GB HITACHI, SATA, 32MB c., 7200
Graphic Card PCI-E GAINWARD GeForce 9800 GT Green, 1GB DDR3, HDMI, DVI, D-SUB, HDTV
Are there some better alternatives?
I am not familiar with computer building, I 'll search more and put maybe some better configuration if i find.

What resolution are you running at? That will pretty much set whether you can run "ultra" or not, with a last-gen GPU (9800GT). I would spend a bit more on the CPU/mobo to get more out of it - and by that I mean, go to a Lynnfield i5/i7 - depending on whether those apps take advantage of HT or not.
