- How can we support the map making community more?
Im not sure about the UMS community, but with regard to melee maps i think that there needs to be greater communication between blizzard and map makers. Im not sure how long a season will be yet, but a regular turnover of maps imo is a thing that is essential for the ladder not to become stale.
Perhaps after a while, when new map makers have emerged a system could be put in place similar to what we have in korea atm (variety of maps submitted by top tier developers (or randoms knowing blizz), commission for successful maps)
But the underlying feature to support the mapper is communication

Best thing would be to update ladder/competitive maps with new maps often... don't make it like WC3 where it's been like the same four maps for the past three years or something boring like that
|
The ladder map pool should include 1 to 3 user maps each season. Have a contest in the prior season for makers to submit their works and have people judge them.

I really really hope Blizzard does not screw up with melee/ladder maps this time.. as I feel strongly that it is the 2nd most important issue in terms of its success as a competitive game. If they listen to any of the ideas from Plexa/Hawk or do something similar then that would be great, but given their past history with WC3's ladder (and how several maps that shipped with TFT and even the original ROC are still being used in the ladder today.. and the huge lack of communication/support with mapmakers).. I am very worried.

I don't think Blizzard should attempt to make maps that will be used competitively. Mapdori (those are the guys right?) does a better job than Blizzard could ever hope. Maybe a collaboration would be good, but Blizzard trying to make all the progaming / ladder maps in-house sounds like a major folly. Blizzard doesn't hold leagues, so they shouldn't make the maps.
Maybe just ship a few with the game to promote early growth, and maybe cute map of the moth or something, but that's about it.

CowGoMoo and two other guys are already bitching about maps. E.g. one of the maps has a far away, cliffable natural and a backdoor entrance (blocked). LOL He's making his own version of RH3. (I hope I'm not doing anything wrong by telling you this Blizzard is known for crappy maps anyways. xD)
I hope they implement destructible bridges/stuff like that, unoffcial ramps from SC, and some tool for achieving map symmetry. ^^

Hold contests for user-made melee maps to join future ladder mappacks. Keep in contact with the mappers that win and assemble a team of winning authors to deliberate with Blizzard's representatives on balance. I'd also recommend that whomever runs these events and watches over them, to have articles on current balance issues etc and what may change it (or you could save it for meetings between the 'amateurs' and the Blizzard reps.).

This says the majority of what I want to say... I would also add that once a competitive scene forms, and you start rotating maps or however it works, ask the players what maps to keep and what to get rid of.
In short: Include the competitive community when it comes to decisions on competitive maps.

I think it'd be cool function if the map maker only had to design one piece of the map, and the editor would duplicate that piece and rotate it so you can achieve perfect symmetry for multiplayer maps

And really if you look at wc3 there are no good non-Blizzard melee maps to talk about, everything is about the Blizzard maps so its not like there is a heavy pressure on Blizzard to change them for some fan made ones. I am sure that if the majority of the community prefered some fanmade maps Blizzard would find a way to include them in the map pool, but that didn't happen in wc3 yet.

But there were several good maps in Prime League (Blue Rose, Crossroads, Odessa, Silver Moon, etc.)

That is a fabulous idea!

Map Making Questions for Fans:
- What features would you like to see in the StarCraft II Editor? * a scriptinglanguage * userdefined per gameobject variables * creating own abilities and buffs configure the casting-type of an ability (All cast, One casts, etc) * extending units with modules which add graphics, additional weapons, abilities etc * control over camera and unitselection(i.e. set limitations on the number of selected units based on their type). * Include all models of units you tried out, you have from SC1 etc * Importer/Exporter for Models, Textures and Animations from/to standard formats like 3ds, wavefront objects etc - How can we support the map making community more? * Allow some way to sign the map with your battlenet nick. So users can see they are playing on the "official" version of the original creator and not a rigged one - How would you like to see the custom maps and mods handled in the future? Allow custom ladders: Users can create a ladder which allows automatch and chosenmatches(chosen is necessery if the usercount is too low for automatch) just like the standardladder. Admins of the custom ladder can set a mod(or stay with original SC2), a mappool, ban users from the ladder, punish them(modify their ranking) etc. This allows a Dota ladder administered by the official website, a SC-Classic ladder administered by a SC-Fansite, etc
Some reasoning behind you don't have to send to Blizzard: I implicitly asked for all features to implement a harder starcraft(optional NoMBS, NoSmartcast etc) and a custom mappool in case blizzard screws the mappool and stays with boring standardmaps like LT for ever. So in case SC2 does not deliver it's promises we still can open a ladder which fits our (and hopefully quite a number of koreans) needs.

i think masterofchaos hit everything i had in mind, and more :s

you don't want to segregate automatch.

I hope there is some way for mapmakers to have some sort of seal on their maps so that we dont have these fucking 9 year olds taking every fucking map, adding a tree somewhere and then saying it's their own CHAOS VERSION of the map and then we have 98789623498023847 versions of the same fucking map.
If I made a map I would like to have the rights to it. I and only I alone can make changes to it and when a new one comes out I would like the old one out of the fucking way. I guess it would be kinda difficult to remove the old versions of maps and perhaps unnecessary as the new one becomes popular and old ones just fade away, but some way of ensuring that the original map maker reserves the rights, cuz god damnit its getting fucking annoying joining a game and having to download ANOTHER version of Luna / LT

What I d really love to see for competitive play is a rating feature that lets players with the best bnet ranking (no noob feedback por favor !) give a note out of 10 about all the maps available on bnet, so that , each month, the lowest rated map for competitive ladder would either have to be modified or cut for a new one.
