If so, moving close to family when you're raising three(?) kids seems like it would just be good for everyone.

Indeed I suspect that's the primary reason why Artosis is leaving South Korea. Good luck to him & the family with their move.

Good for him! Tough choice but I wish him the best! Probably the GOAT caster.

Hopefully this means we see Artosis in non-GSL a lot more now!

Also, if he's not able to cast GSL online, I hope they bring on State full-time. He was awesome with Tasteless!

Wow. Good for him. Never thought I'd be this sad about a relative stranger's (potential) career change.

Can't say I'd blame Afreeca for not permitting online casts of GSL. Maybe some tri-casts with Artosis casting remotely would be a good compromise. Hell even guest casts from time to time would be rad.

Gonna miss him.

In PEI you can buy a pretty big house with acres of land for a few hundred thousand dollars. In Vancouver/Toronto you might be able to buy a studio apartment for the same price.

Surprising, but it would be really cool if they can do online casts like with ASL!

Tastosis is a huge part of why I love watching GSL, they just do such an excellent job, I hope they'll allow online casts!

End of an era. Been watching tastetosis for over a decade now.

This is a smart move though, with the Blizzard ESL contract ending after this year the future of SC2 esports in 2023+ is very much in doubt sadly. It's been a good run but leaving after GSL S3 is good timing and could help him be able to stream on twitch more during NA/EU hours.

Just one more sign of the times. Best of luck to Artosis. Will be interested to see what Tasteless does in the future as well. He seems to also be trying to build a Youtube presence but not as successfully.

I’ve always appreciated Dan and Nick’s contribution to Starcraft. I selfishly hope they will always be able to stay connected to the scene for as long as possible. Im hoping SC3 or some other RTS will come out soon so their careers can continue to grow and be exciting.

Plus side is that the east coast of Canada is one of the best time zones for esports. He’ll be more able to cover NA/EU events.

Sadly, I think this just points to the end of GSL with more certainty. :/

Going to miss Tastetosis and GSL. :/

At least they'll still cast ASL though.

Is there any reason for the GSL to stop though? Like, is the deal between Afreeca and the sponsor are going to end as well? I just see its still going fine, and we have more players coming back from military and doing pretty well and attract enough fanbase, especially with more foreigner coming over.
And greatest of luck to Artosis and his family, thats a great family decision and we are all going to miss him.

I can't blame him... if you are young, Korea is the place to be... Having multiple kids, Canada provides so much advantages in terms of space of apartments, nature, healthcare and education... perfect place to go. I wouldn't want to raise kids or getting old in Korea myself as a foreigner...

The GSL, like most esport events, Starcraft or otherwhise, is financed partly by Blizzard. In 2020, Blizz negociated a 3 year deal with them and ESL, it's up this year and we don't know what's next after it. The GSL in its current form is most likelly not durable without Blizzard support.

I might just be dead wrong on this, but I thought GSL was never part of the deal between Blizzard with ESL. Afreeca pretty much run the GSL events by themselves, with sponsorship from KR product companies. The only thing that Blizzard has to do with GSL is that its their game, but no financial support is involved.

End of an era indeed. Moving to Canada makes sense given his family situation though.

I also wonder about GSL though. Even if GSL continues, it's been... man, 10 years strong with Tastosis. Seeing them cast GSL is like comfort food at this point. Those two even predate the rise of big YouTubers. Definitely sad to see that come to an end.

PEI is a good choice tbh. good location, affordable housing, family ties (? I believe?). Big change from Seoul though ofc.

It was nice meeting you at various events way back in the WGT/WCG era and the first few DH in Europe outside Sweden for SC2, glad you ll be able to attend more of those in an easier way as tournaments resume, hopefully DH Montreal too.

Thanks for all the work in Korea and for the scene.

I think the funniest thing about this news is that Artosis said he already had tested to see how latency in BW to Korea was last time he was in PEI.

Because of course he'd do that.

More seriously, if you're wondering why he's doing this, he explains it at the start of his most recent stream. His reasons are fairly sound I think and this seems like the best choice for his family.

I think everyone understands why he's doing it but it still feels a little bit sad because it's like the end of an era.

But I wish him all the best of course on his new journey.

There's a housing bubble in Canada, and PEI is experiencing a housing crisis currently (as are many other provinces). Isn't an issue if you or your parents own property and have access to home equity (in case you wish to co-habitate or get a mortgage although interest rates are on the rise and the rate of growth in housing year-to-year prices is leveling off...)

Consumer inflation is also approaching eight percent in Canada, not to mention it is one of the most taxed countries in the world. Although PEI (and Manitoba) are the only two provinces with no specific tax bracket for people who earn more than $100,000 per year - the top tax is 16.7 percent and kicks in at $63,970. There are politicians who are pushing for higher provincial income taxes for 'top earners' in PEI. Federal income taxes are substantial and sales tax is at 15 percent in PEI.

End of an era.. 14 years is A LOT of time!

thanks to Artosis (and Tasteless) for all the memories. It was a lot of fun, especially the 2008-10 pro in-house tours, NonY's insane courage run and that couple of early GSL seasons. Fantastic stuff.

Anyway.. Best of luck in your new place. Cheers

Uhmm He has 3 children and I am a father myself I guess it has to do with education and a future for his family, I live in a big city and life it's pretty expensive I heard good things about Canada and the standard of living there so I'm guessing is for that reason.

Having a family is waaaaay too expensive.

I really hope the community pushes GSL to keep the tastosis duo alive, next to SC it's also the bond they have and the banter that makes people keep tuning in to SC.

Best of luck Artosis, it's a good move

There are politicians who are pushing for higher provincial income taxes for 'top earners' in PEI. Federal income taxes are substantial and sales tax is at 15 percent in PEI.

yes i m in Ottawa (immigrant, no parental help) and it s been horrible. But I thought PEI was still relatively decent.

He will specifically stream and play during NA hours and he will have a small MMR increase by not playing as many Koreans. Consistently S rank Artosis incoming

I have relatives in Richmond, BC. Now that's a housing bubble!

Sad to see this but it had to happen at some point with the blizz money ending soon. Ive always kinda wondered how viable the gsl income is for a family of 5 especially as viewership and the scene in general dwindled down

I bet the better Na/Eu streaming hours will make up for the lost gsl income while Artosis figures out his next steps. And hopefully this means a lot more Arty at international events

Noooooo. But best luck to Dan the Man and his clan

Honestly, I thought it would be better (and we saw it) sometimes with Arty + one guest caster, I enjoyed Special’s insight especially, Scan was good and I was OK to see more of it.

Assuming Artosis can’t do it, I thought Tasteless did a great job letting State do his thing.

Tasteless + a rotating cast of racial specialists or whoever from the foreign scene is in Korea at the time could work really well, he’s just such a genial guy it basically works whoever you stick alongside him.

Obviously Tastosis has that intangible quality, but we’ll be fine. I wonder if his kids have picked up decent Korean chops, give them a little bilingual leg up being back in the Americas!

Artosis can move wherever he'd like, his well-paying career as a streamer has reached fruition. I doubt he needs the extra income from GSL/ASL - seeing as how he doesn't necessarily need them, I understand that he would prefer to take his family to relatively nicer environment for a growing family.

He will be able to make his own hours, and even getting taxed to hell I'm sure he'll make plenty of money for his family. I'm glad he stayed in Korea as long as he did, and I'm thankful for all the seasons if excellent casting he's given us along with Tasteless.

I wonder if Tasteless will follow suit eventually. He is the more eclectic and interesting personality of the two in my opinion, you can pair him with virtually any other caster and he will do great. Between the draconian social systems, lack of space, and bizarrely superficial Korean culture (and horrific air quality) I imagine Tasteless will find a new home, eventually. He seems like the type to retire in style, streaming from a bungalo on the coast of a nice area in a South American country.

NGL im pretty sad hes leaving Korea, not seeing him and Nick cast together wont be the same for GSL, even if he pops in online somehow will be weird. At least ASL is still going. Selfish part of me wishes he could just stay in Korea forever and cast with Nick. Seems like an end of an era, this wasn't something i thought would actually happen.

Tho it does make sense for him. He has a wife and a bunch of kids and living in Korea forever is probably not the best long term. Moving there he will be closer to family which will be better for his kids.

Hopefully it works out good for him and we can still see him cast tournaments

I wish Artosis and his family all the best. today, i learned what PEI stands for.

tbh i'm not sure how I would feel about GSL online casts. maybe it would be cool if Tasteless was casting live with someone else (possibly rotating) and Artosis would give his input between games or something.

I never really thought I would ever read this news but it does make sense. he's truly come a long way from jumping over the barrier so he doesn't have to pay subway fare to getting a house for his family in PEI. I'm weirdly proud of Artosis.

It is better to stop it too soon rather than too late.
In his duo with Tasteless, Artosis was supposed to be the anaytical caster.
However, if you watch the last SC2 GSL games that he casted, you will notice that he called the games prematurely and incorrectly nearly half of the time.
Of course, he is a historical figure in the Starcraft scene, and people genuinely love him for it.
But you can't live forever on past achievements and fame.

I'm sure he'll eventually make the majority of his money from streaming/BW, and I wish him the best of luck in doing what he really loves.

Sucks, but all the best to Artosis for the future. He did a lot for the game and for esports as a whole. It is safe to say, that esports would not be what it is today without GSL and SC2 being their precursor.

Artosis's video/elaboration:

Congrats to Artosis to having an amazing SK journey, being one of the biggest non-Korean names and personalities in StarCraft, and best of luck on the next step of his life!

I wonder what this means for his twitch stream. Won't his ping be too high to play Korean ladder? Would be cool though if it breathes some life into the US servers.

Look, I haven't watched SC content in years, but this is still really hard to read.

I genuinely don't think that SC2 would have survived for how long as it did without Tastosis. They were the best. Their chemistry was incredible, and they never lost their magic in over ten years of casting together.

Happy for Artosis, and I couldn't think of a better place to raise kids, but man does this feel like the end of GSL to me...

Also, from the Tasteless video:

"Would I be open to casting GSL live with anyone else but Artosis? No. I don't wanna do it with anybody else but Artosis."
Man that's good to hear.

Feels so weird but it's understandable. I started watching GSL in 2010 right after starcraft 2 came out and has pretty much been a fan every since and followed it through thick and thin.

I think you are reversing cause and effect. The prime mover is an unbelievably great video game franchise. This franchise attracts some great people. I'd say Artosis career rests upon the efforts of the brilliant men who created Starcraft. I'd say the Starcraft franchise does not rest upon Artosis' efforts.

I personally love Starcraft. That said, in the wider scheme of things the Starcraft franchise, as great as it is gameplay wise, isn't that great of a financial success. To put things into perspective Pacman brought in over $1 Billion in 1980 for Namco. The Starcraft franchise is now 24 years old and has yet to hit the Billion dollar mark in revenue.

This is huge news! Can't believe Artosis will say goodbye to Korea, his home for the past 14 years and where he rose to fame. Best of luck to him and his family as they transition to Canada.

Prince Edward ISLAND is smaller in area than your typical greater metro area of a major city. It has a population less than 250,000. PEI is in the Atlantic Time Zone... 1 hour later than places like New York and Miami. The lag has gotta be pretty bad.

One of the greatest detective shows of all time is filmed on Prince Edward Island. Tom Selleck as Magnum P.E.I.

Maybe not only to watch Tastosis but it's definitely a huge appeal of the tournament.
Without Tastosis viewer numbers will definitely (significantly?) shrink.

At least for me I probably wouldn't watch the low-tier matches like e.g. Ragnarok vs Keen if it wasn't for Tastosis commentating

Sports—and by extension E-Sports—is all about creating entertaining live TV. StarCraft is a community, and even for some of us its nostalgia, and personalities are inter-wound with it. Removing the iconic casting duo will irrevocably affect GSL viewership, just as English viewership of Brood War sky-rocked when Tasteosis began live casting the ASL a few years back.

80% of viewership jumping ship? Probably not; but, do not underestimate the magnitude of this—this is a big loss for StarCraft live commentary. On a personal note, Tasteless and Artosis when doing solo-casts, they just lack that special-something.

Day[9] gone; InControl, RIP brother, gone; and now Artosis, gone.
