ESL Open Cups reverting to $400 prize pool

ESL has announced that as of February 14th, Shopify will no longer be contributing to the ESL Open prize pool. The prize pool will go down from $800 to $400 per cup (1st: $200, 2nd: $100, 3rd/4th: $50 each). Also, the semifinal rounds will be shortened to best-of-three series from best-of-five.

Also, ESL will look to allow more ESL Open lobby access for players who are looking to cast matches, as also push to release replay packs from the ESL Open Cups during the off-season period (not 100% as of yet).

Shopify's TLO also commented on the lapsing of the ESL Open sponsorship (TL;DR: we're sponsoring other things, not the open cups anymore):

Cups were getting huge viewers in 2020 Amid lockdowns. I think they changed the days though and viewership tanked

I think the switch to Bo3 in later rounds is just for the Offseason, right?

That sentence is poorly written and ambiguous, Kaby. I think that's why the question was asked to begin with. I'd say it sounds like it's just for the off-season but in the opening clause of the sentence they make an indirect reference to the prize pool being smaller ("less-at-stake") although that will be the case going forward and not just for the offseason.

Yeah I feel that they will maybe see how it works out and ask the players' before getting or not getting back to bo5's
