It isn't impossible by any means. Just gotta work at it. Is it NA ladder? I think EU GM is more like 5500, and it's hard to stay there. (Plus the EU ladder is the fiercest compared to KR where only the top top ladder is strong afaik, and NA which is the weakest among the 3) Since the op seems to be from germany, I'd say he has a better shot at GM playing on NA server even with ping once he is like 5.2k on EU ladder, rather than pushing from high master to GM on EU.
All in all it should be possible but you'll plateau along the way.

Knowing how others have fared with similar projects, I think there is only an extremely slim chance you can reach GM after not having played games for 7 years. The only way IMO would be going full time for a whole year with very good coaches.
If you are patient and dedicated, my guess is that you will platau out somewhere between 4000 and 5000 MMR, but climbing even to high Diamond is a stiff challenge.
Good luck anyway!

Good Point for NA and EU Ladder. I will only play/compete in the EU Ladder.

I just came back to the game after not playing since 2013 and have been sitting around 5100 MMR. Came back in April immediatley hit 4200 and worked my way up since then, but just can't get into GM. I think it's do-able but it's really not easy.

I don't know, I just got back into sc2 after stopping sometime around late WoL and I'm 4.5k atm. If the guy played against pros back in the day it shouldn't be too hard to get into GM regardless of the server he's on.

Remember this was in Beta, and many players he will have to beat even to get to 5k now have played seriously and regularly since, then and have aquired very strong mechanics and a deep understanding of the game.

Good luck on your journey! It is tough, but possible and will take time. GLHF my friends!

No it is not possible. Just kidding of course it is! But it will be very hard and time consuming the real question is will it be worth it to you? Will require long term time devotion guaranteed

Human potential ?
Let me know, you have to graft some spines on your body, add some adrenals glands and boost your metabolic organism..
Even if you are as old than me you can become a grand master

back in the day, mid masters didnt knew what "BUILD" was, just doing build properly you could get into high masters, i didnt play for about 7years, after being high master terran back then, but when i came back i struggled even against diamond players, i eventually reached 5k (that was 2019) and stopped playing, now im back again and struggling at 4.6k, players seems to be even better, its crazy.

A pointless question. Theoretically there is nothing stopping anyone from achieving anything in particular, short of a caste system, or basic laws of physics; in practice even for something like reaching GM in SC2, you are competing against all the other thousands of people who are trying to reach GM, and have been trying to do so with years of experience and attempts behind them.
Instead of just forging ahead with determination like all the other thousands of anonymous players, if you have to ask such a question, you probably aren't capable of doing so.

The level of active players in diamond and above has risen a lot. You just can't compare nowadays low master to 2012 master league. GM always has been very hard to reach, you need serious determination, talent and grit to even get close.

Yeah just makes sense after years and years of a game. I look forward. In some days I start laddering the first time. Keep you updated.

Good luck on your quest.
As someone who's been playing since release, and never passed D1 in 1v1, I sincerely mean it. What you are proposing will be no small task in 2020.

When? the lowest I ever see in masters nowadays is 150 and that is in specifically slow matchups in slow opening games like pvp when both players sit on 2 base and turtle generally I never see players with less than 200, for zergs never less than than 230. Granted apm does not equal skill and also depending on how you play the game you will artificially increase or decrease your apm, camera keys don’t count towards apm and things like rapid fire hot key and producing units from larva give a massive amount, I play with 260 apm or more as Zerg 230 with Terran and 198 with toss but I think I have about the same speed with all the races. The differences are due to how they play and apm inflation.

Those players use very awkward strats that are tricky to deal with, doesn't mean this guy is doing anything way wrong to not be there

Interesting about the APM that most in Master wont have below 200. I am looking forward how it is going.Right now i started to do my placement matches. I have never been in a league so far. Lets see how it is going. 4 Games left, will do them tonight. Probably i am streaming. Tried it yesterday and it kind of worked with the internet. So you can have a look later here to follow my journey and ask some more questions or so - https://www.twitch.tv/fazinate
PS: besides SC2 i will also stream the new CNC Remastered which i have just started to play.

Hey! I recognize your TL name. Didn't you win one of the EA Masters tournaments in CNC back in the days? I think Master league in SC2 should be easy for you with your talent. You don't really lose that, even if you don't play for some years. I am not sure about Grandmaster but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if you would hit that as well.
