Thing is, in SC2 updates are compulsory.

I think I remember back in the day that Day[9] was lamenting how he had to use an old client to watch his Patch 1.5 replays.
Maybe I'm mistaken though. I think only WoL/HotS/LotV betas needed their own client until now.

They will either come up with a solution (is not that hard to create a separate launcher for replay viewer) or we will have some workaround to do it.
I bet that downloading old versions of the client could do the trick, but that would imply using some trick to launch it offline.
In my opinion what they have done is pretty stupid, unless it is done because there is some update on the core code of the game for performance/anti-hack, which doesn't seem to be the case (sadly). The only reasonable reason is to cut client size significantly, because otherwise I think that the file packaging system thing should be doable with a decent amount of patience.
SC2 devs have gone full Dota2. UI revamp with bugs, client updated and 64-bit/DX11 support unoptimized, heavy performance loss, replay uncompatibility. Sadly they didn't copy the "update every minor glitch/work in the game every day" philosophy.

Given we have a viable way to watch them now, is there anyway we could push for the Inno and Byul games of GSL?

Well, saw this too late and my client is already updated. Where do I get the old client? I don´t like the feeling that I have to rely on "cracked" versions pre 3.x to be able to watch my old replays. This can´t be the only solution, right?

Really sick of all this "Community Feedback" that people beg the devs to listen to.
Seriously, what % of users would even watch an old replay? one that there's no VOD of?
You have to be kidding me... you're "THAT" guy who just because you don't care you think most people don't care either.
A lot of us have many important replays saved and it would be a HUGE negative if Activision Blizzard just threw that down the drain for no good reason.
It would even completely stop me from buying LOTV as I cannot support a company that makes such stupid decisions.

What pisses me off is for what? Now my clan chat is MIXED with general chat. What a joke.
Exactly. I can't believe some of the completely unnecessary things they're doing which only makes things much worse. Especially the things that were good before they messed with them.
What in the world is going on over there...

omg blizzard give us already new patch so we can watch old school games jesus..

I used to watch my first games of sc2. It was really hilarious. Too bad this won't be possible for people anymore.

Anyone know if this is changing anytime soon in any way?
I've even downloaded old pirated copies and installed them and they still won't play the replays due to some errors.
This is the worst. It's not a problem that the new version won't let us watch old replays. The problem is that Blizzard is giving us zero ways in which to do it! Zero!

I realize this is a rather large bump but has anyone figured out a way to do this? I was feeling nostalgic and wanted to watch some old WoL reps. Unfortunately, the client has updated to the most recent version which obviously means that I can't watch reps anymore.
Only option I can think of is to reinstall HoTS and don't do any updates. I should be able to drop WoL reps in due to compatibility and I guess I'll just ignore my awful HoTS reps lol

The only way is to legally install a copy of pre 3.0 SC2 from whatever source that may be. My opinion on the matter is if you legally own the game, it should be fine to find yourself a copy of the game pre-3.0

Yeah you need to have a version of SC2 before the infamous patch saved on your computer. If you have that, just put your .sc2replay on the sc2switcher.exe icon in the "support" file of that version, and the game will launch the correct version. It takes a while to load if you have to change version of the game several times though.
I suppose you don't have a prepatched version saved since you're asking now, I can try and give you mine if you want, I don't know if that works though.

If you use your cd installation with no internet, then launch your game and turn on the internet, would it work?
Or for WoL specifically, maybe just use your Hear of the Swarm cd install? Not sure if HotS cds included the neccessary WoL patches. Probably not. =[

thanks for the info. I found an old WoL installation so I tried dropping onto the main SCII.exe and the scIIswitcher.exe. I only managed to watch two reps. Everything else requires a patch it seems and that installs the new battle.net. I'm thinking of installing HoTS and trying to see if that at least gives me the ability to watch WoL reps only (I'll be satisfied with this since that's what I mostly played).
Extremely shitty move by Blizzard. Punish fans who bought WoL and HoTS with the inability to use an advertised part of the product. Can't believe this patch didn't meet much resistance when it came out. Guess most SCII folks don't care much about their reps.
edit: Nebuchad, thanks for the offer. Doubt it'll help though plus it probably contains your cd key and such, so I wouldn't feel right asking for a copy ^^

there was always the discussion, even back in WOL when they added some features for replays like fast forwarding etc. --> all old replays couldnt be watched anymore
the sad story is blizzard doesnt care about you and your replays

Because as it stands, you are forced to update to the latest patch and blizzard gave us no tools or methods to watch old reps. I don't even mind doing workarounds to watch them, just provide me with the method. Also, why can't I just update to the patch right before the one that broke backward compatibility? Why am I forced to get the latest patch even though I don't even own LOTV (only bought WoL/HoTS)?

There are cracked offline versions of WoL and HotS with various patches that would probably work.

I don't think so. I believe I tried this and it didn't work (could have just been with WoL instead, I can't remember - HotS disk could work). I backed up my old HotS SC2 directory before the LotV patch hit, and I've been recording WoL and HotS replays in the manner that Nebuchad discussed (not logging into Battle.net and simply dragging the replay file over the SC2switcher executable to play the file (you need to have an internet connection so the cache can be downloaded).
