Don't just watch StarCrafts, PLAY IT! Support the StarCrafts mod in SC2 arcade, play for FREE!
Hello everyone! It's Jon Burton creator of CarBot Animations. We've been creating StarCrafts episodes for almost 3 years now, and after many requests and comments we've decided to finally put the lovable characters in the actual starcraft game!
Thats right a STARCRAFTS MOD! That is FREE to access for anyone! What we are setting out to do is have all the StarCrafts characters and art in StarCraft 2 as a mod in the Arcade (again which is FREE!). The mod will include all units in StarCrafts 2D glory, as well as reskinned landscapes and doodads (props) everything from a tree to a battlecruiser will be revamped into the cartoon world of StarCrafts.

Contributed, mostly because the perks really are super cool.
To be fair redrawing all that amount of 2D sprites is INSANELY high amount of work, that's why you don't see a lot of pure 2D art games nowadays.

Yes, I'm aware how much goes into 2D animation, hopefully most people are. That doesn't change the fact 70k is a high number. It's necessary, but still intimidating.
If people are complaining that the work doesn't add up to the money (and some already are on the reddit thread ]: ) they need to take another look at the sample sprite sheet that was zoomed out on in the video, hot damn.
Is having this as an Arcade mod the only option? Like if it's just a graphics replacement, would it ever be possible to play with this stuff on ladder?

Blizzard would have to change the assets for ladder. They are probably waiting for this to finish so they can apply it to ladder, announce the technology is there, and get all the karma.
They should honestly invest into this as a skin you can use on ladder and whatever. I assume it's possible to do some trickery so that maps can automatically replace assets for people wanting to have the carbot look, but could be wrong.
I was earlier going to complain about the sum, but had a 2nd look at the zoomed out spreadsheet and added some good will since I probably underestimate the time it actually takes. Now I'll just say that I can understand that alot of digital work is outsourced, shit's expensive. ;P
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! it's so cute, all colorful and whatnot, the battlefield with little flowers and stuff... haha, looks so awesome!! Would be cool if they could like, make the game playable on a phone, not just a mod... like take it a step further.

No. They would be separate thing for ladder games.
I think it's possible to set up a separate ladder for the custom game/arcade game, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, the main reason why skins work financially in other games like Dota and CS:GO is that you get to show them off. SC2 just doesn't have infrastructure to properly support this.
Hopefully Blizzard actually gets something done on that front.
Who in their right mind think it's OK to post an OP with only a video and a link? Some supporting text would be appreciated for us that are either lazy (way faster to read text) or simply don't have access tot he video (proxies/ mobile).
Also worse mod name evar, take the game "main" title albeit with an extra subtle "s" and add "mod" after. Really?
Anyway good luck with the campaign, if you can keep the feel of SC2 I may give it a shot. :D
This looks amazing. I'm actually kinda shocked that you're making all of the assets. Seems like a lot of work but the gameplay footage in the video looks amazing.
why does he need 70k for this? where would the money go? How does that speed up development? Looks nice though, would rather they let us have the option to implement this in client then on only arcade

Starcrafts didn't post this OP... don't blame carbot for a supposively "bad" OP. Also I think the title is fine. Starcrafts is the name Carbot has been going with the last few years. If you have a different title I'd like to hear it :1

If you read the page, it's going to take a shit ton of animation time + modders time. And for your second part, that's not something Carbot can control
This is the coolest thing in Starcraft history, ever! If they (and us!) are good at promoting it, it could be fucking huge. I hope it happens and that game media gives it exposure!

I would assume that they are aware of this - who knows, they might already be trying to incorporate the new unit designs in the Mod

I wish they shared their development process :<, Last time I remember a kinda 2d/3d thing made in sc2 (AFAIK a remake of a Legend of Zelda game or something like that, might have been Pokemon, fuzzy memory) It looked kinda meh, nothing like the quality shown in the video.
They say that $70k is the minimum goal. What happens if they don't reach that? Do they plan to continue with it and release something eventually anyways?
Looks like they are doing well so far, hopefully they can make it since what they have right now looks fantastic.

Yeah I knew about this, I really hope they can lower the requirement for lotv units.
Also it looks like carbot was thinking to make the game less stressful but I wonder how are they going to achieve it
I'm totally in. This looks so awesome! The 70k are 75% reached, we can do this.
This is exactly what SC2 needs, a more fun-oriented fresh community-driven approach. (Funnily enough, this might even bring my brother to sc2, who still plays sc:bw because of the more clear 2d graphics)
So yeah, let's go! Maybe even Starcrafts+.... I have a dream.
The funny thing is that some of the big donations have come from people who do not even play SC2 - they just enjoy the cartoons that Carbot makes. For instance one guy called Touji (I think) dropped $1000 and does not even own the game.
Another donor dropped $4705 last night alone and has made big donations before. He has a BattleNet account at least, and has donated probably 10% of the total by now.
The 70K goal will be reached but it seems like it will be due to a small number of individuals not the community. I dropped $115 and will drop some more again next pay check. I would drop more but I am in an upgrade cycle for four of my computers.
It is just shy of $80K now, so we get Patches, and dat zergling with the patch in its mouth. Next up is 82,500 and I want to see it get there so that we get Crackhead (Patches' wingman).
Also the requirement for LotV units was reduced from $95K to $90.
Someone should organize a show match/fund raiser, or some kind of event to bring awareness to this very special project. It may help fully fund the mod. BasetradeTV would be the perfect partners (poke poke)
If not, we can hope Blizzard will match the community passion and donate the rest of the $$ 8)
