A happy new year, and welcome this month's special edition of the top 50 streamers list.
Another year has passed, and so it is time to look back and compile one huge list of the top 100 streamers to find out who will take the crown of the most popular streamer in 2014. Who had the most average viewers over the year? Who has been the most productive? Who has streamed the most hours in the last year?
Let's find out.
But first comes the top 50 lists for the previous month, of course.
Table of contents
Huh? What's this? For those of you who don't already know what this is about: I'm gathering various data (viewers, game, events, etc.) from all the streams that are presented on teamliquid.net (those that you can in the sidebar to your right) and use that data to produce the pretty tables and graphs you see below. The tables only contain SC2 players (that is, streams of people playing games of Starcraft 2) and not casters, teams or other streams. The tables also only contain Starcraft 2 related activities. So, for instance when CatZ is streaming Dota2, it will not be taken into account.
The data I gather is then turned into the tables you see below. One is sorted by the average viewers, the other is sorted by the average viewers times the hours streamed. The latter table favors those that stream a lot, while the former table favors popular streamers regardless of how much they stream. Either ranking has its advantages and disadvantages, and thus I present both.
For either table, I have a minimum required stream time of 5 hours to be included in the list.
The list
Due to space limitations, I have to shorten the headers and leave some data out of the tables presented here. You can get the full tables from the links below. The headers aren't as clear as I'd like them to be thanks to this, so here's a quick explanation, just in case: "Viewers" denotes the average viewers in the given month. "Hours" are the hours played. "Place diff" and "Viewer diff" are the place and viewer differences compared to last month.
Also, the HTML version linked beneath the images has some more information that I had to leave out due to space limitation, most notably the featured status of the players.
Now, Without further ado, here's this month's tables:
Stray observations and musings
- Aand Winter is back, grabbing his #1 spot for the month once again, with a lead of almost 1000 viewers of the second place.
- Nothing has changed in the viewers*hours category, as Winter seems utterly untouchable in that category these days.
- Notable streamers who made it to last month's list, but did not make it this month or who did not stream at all: Taeja, Byun, Fantasy, Stardust.
- If you find any mistakes or errors in the lists, please do let me know, especially concerning team changes or players that you are absolutely sure should be on the lists, but are not.
The top 100 of 2014
Stray observations and musings
The big picture
(The actual numbers are not important, it's the ratio between month that's important.) Note that these are player streams only.
Slow and steady, player stream viewership seems to go up. Sweet.
WCS/GSL
Not a whole lot of individual big tournaments happened in December. The Hot6 Cup had some pretty decent viewer numbers, and it's too early to talk too much about the SSL. It will be interesting how it's going to fare against the GSL.
Proleague & ATC
Huzzah, Proleague is back! And so are its viewers, which are about on par with the viewer numbers from the previous season so far.
That's all for this month. Hope you guys enjoyed, as always. Any kind of feedback is always welcome!

Thanks for the new month data and past year compilation! Winter's been kicking ass; nice to see him on top last month. He and ForGG and ProTech have been really cranking out the hours! So has NeuroSwarm, but I don't know who that is.
iNcontroL is missing his Protoss symbol?

did Winter ever finish the showmatch with Dragon?
they were doing showmatch then Winter got ddos and got disconnected from the game
did they ever complete that showmatch?
|
Thanks for your consistent work!
I don't want to stir up anything, but how come proTech got unfeatured? I liked having a 2on2 stream on the sidebar.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have ProTech, who streamed for over 3994 hours, surpassing the 3945 hours he streamed in 2013. He did not manage to beat PainUser's record of over 400 hours streamed in a year, however (and PainUser streamed a measly 1946 hours in 2014).
Should be 4000 hours :D

Well if you actually calculating the total time broadcast ( not just SC2 broadcast ) I streamed 4,517 hours. Just not all SC2

Pretty cool stats as usual. I'll have to disagree when you said that viewership is increasing though. Due to the scarcity of tournaments in December, the player stream views are usually higher. Its steady.

Speaking of streamers, is Blizzard doing their Streamer awards for 2014? I thought that was a really awesome event last year.

Thank you for doing this!

Wow, sick stats. How do you stream for 4k hours and not get featured? xD

because being featured is more than just hours streamed. I question daily why 'Kaityln' is featured...

Are Winter's viewers real? There isn't a lot of chat in his stream compared to the number of the vierwers so I'm wondering.
|
So Flash didn't even stream 5 hours?

Conti ;~; where's the total viewership including tournament my man <3

What are the other streams contributing numbers to the proleague view count? Are they Korean twitch streams, Azubu, Afreeca, or what have you here? What's going on with them?

his viewers are legit. They just don't like chatting, that's all. they watch him because he is so damn entertaining and interacts with his viewers. That's why he got over night 2000 hardcore fanboys, who tune in everytime he streams. He has just an amazing personality.

If the chat is nice and positiv, then you should not except a lot chat. Best examples are Grubby and Demuslim. Stephano and IdrA chat activity feels like 10x times more by same amount of viewers.
I really dont know about Winter, I just dont watch his stream.

Protech has streamed 4000 hours in 2014. That is insane.

is there any specific reason why? i'm a top 8 masters zerg who regularly beats GMs, and i was only just featured a few weeks ago (5 days before the end of 2014) after streaming for over 2 years.
i streamed 1426 hours in 2014 which is probably somewhere near the top 5. looking at one of the lists here are the numbers that i see:
protech - 3994 hours (previously a featured streamer) winter - 2196 hours forgg - 2025 hours (rebroadcasts) painuser - 1946 hours agile - 1441 hours (rebroadcasts) kaitlyn -1426 hours
so it seems like i was in 6th overall (potentially 4th if you don't include rebroadcasting) and again i've been doing this for 2 years and was only very recently featured. i'm higher rank in 1s than more than half of the top 5 (protech, winter, painuser) and i have beaten both of those featured players in 1s on ladder. just not sure why you're singling me out, i think that i work pretty hard and i was very happy to be featured recently

The streaming hours probably count rebroadcasts, so I think forgg probably streamed a bit less.

Ways To Qualify For A Feature: Be in any region's WCS system. This includes Premier and Challenger Leagues. Have an appearance in the Round of 16 of any premier tournaments as defined by Liquipedia. Have an extraordinary amount of viewers on your own merits. This doesn't happen often but occasionally people will grow their stream to have several hundred viewers at all times and this is worth consideration.
This is how you become featured.
She has had an extraordinary amount of viewers on her stream.

2 questions :
- Some streamers use rebroadcast when they "stream" (ForGG / Dragon / ...) how can you count "real time" streaming ? - I remember when ProTech was featured, he is still (one of) the best 2v2 player in the world. Can you put him in featuring list again ? I heard TL said he was a racist, that's why he was deleted of the list.

He is singling you out because you are a girl most likely.

even tho he screams like a mad man and calls me a fkin newb every time he beats me in 2s, i still feel bad for ProTech... im talking about featured list ofcourse. i understand the criteria for it and it is very transparent/clear, however i dont understand why there cant be exception for exceptional ppl hashtag passion ^_^
i know avilo also had this problem few years back where he could not get featured if his life depended on it, and kaitlyns example is also applicable here having only recently been featured. point being, considering how hard it is to pass that featured treshold, being featured on TL is a huge bump/help, even tho many ppl probably dont think so.
i for one almost never go to twitch>starcraft to find myself entertaining stream because its more clicks/work than just loading TL and chosing sc2 stream directly. i imagine there are a lot of ppl who do the same. considering starcrafts popularity and its limited player base, i have this impression that by ignoring relatively skilled, dedicated streamers we as the community are basically shooting ourselves in the foot. but that's just my take on it...
im not just writing this for protech sake, there are others great examples (weedamins, ruff, etc)

There's no way I can detect rebroadcasts, unfortunately, since, technically, they're exactly the same as normal broadcasts. I have no way of knowing whether there's actually someone sitting in front of the computer streaming their games or not.
I can, however, filter out events (when players cast a tournament or hosts a talk show), since they are recorded either by the streamers themselves or by TL.net staff.

You'd have to bug TL mods for that. ProTech just quoted the official rules on how to get featured here, and I think there's an official thread somewhere on this, too.

Shot myself in the foot? Neg anyone else for being featured? Clearly you don't know how to read, or english isn't your first language, had you read that post properly and actually used your brain you would see that it was constructive towards Kaitlyn and simply answering someones question. As for you being disgusted well I can understand someone with low IQ would fall into the communities trap to ruin someone's name, but hey those viewer numbers are lookin pretty sharp there recently desrow, so I understand.

So you're telling me, that after ALLLLLLLL the reports that my stream has UNDOUBTEDLY gotten over the years for this accusation of being a racist biggot, my stream still to this day hasn't gotten ToS'd?
Face it desrow, you have fallen into the communities trap because that made up fairy tale is a lie and nothing more.

No disrespect, but I have heard some pretty nasty things on your stream over the years, as well as Destiny/Avilo and they are featured without even getting a warning.
Feel bad for Protech as well, seem like terrible politics to me.

Wow so much drama LOL. Gratz to Kaitlyn. She could very well be the best female sc2 player ina few years. I apppaud her.
As for Protech. I used to be a regular veiwer to your stream. I loved 2v2 and you were on of the few that displayed it at high level. Then you started to bm everyone and call everyone a cheater or a hacker even your own people(FXOpower/LgNWhisper) who clearly arent cheaters lol. Even with all that Avilo syndrome calling people hackers stream cheaters or imabalance matchups I still tuned into your stream.
Anybody who tunes into your stream knows you are a white supremacist. You spout out the n word when you lose. With that said EVEN with that racism going I still tuned into your stream because the racism didnt bother me as I was not offended. Example of racism http://m.imgur.com/m0o3ttg.
The last straw was when derogatory comments towards a respectable female progamer. I was absolutely disgusted and did not know that a human with a mouth like that existed. That was the end for me to be a regular veiwer.
Its not a community trap. Its the truth. Just face it. You have 200 subs and average 200 veiwers. Nobody tunes into your stream except your cult aka your subs. Thats the reason why you dont get reported often and have not been banned yet.
Aside from all the drama. You have incredible work enthic like no other. Im suprised your still going. I still tune in from time to time but only on mute. If your want to be accepted and to grow your channel then you need to change your ways theres no other way to say it. I hope this changed your mindset protech.

And even 'till this day, that same cropped image created by twitch user " fromPsky " is the ONLY shred of evidence in this community that you have. That is a cropped image of a previous subscriber who went rogue and eventually got banned out of my chat.
Needless to say he got salty and upset about that, and created an image that is so fake a 3 year old could tell.
Bottom line, is that if that's all you guys have in the community is one fake image, you're going to have to try a lot harder to get the channel shut down.

Protech is currently doing damage control on his stream, claiming that all the proof that exists is "fake." A couple of the facts:
There are and have been screenshots going back a long time and there will be no false accusations made without proof so here is proof provided:
http://iverysmilesdental.imgur.com/
It's pretty easy to analyze images for manipulation, there will be none in these images.
Fun fact: The words "Wisdom" and "teeth" result in an auto ban from his stream.
Here is what one of his previous sponsors thought about his behavior and the "fake" evidence. Actual direct quote of a reply from one of his sponsors:
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us with this information regarding this sponsored gamer. Because of your information, we began an in-depth investigation into Protech's public behavior. We found your claims and proof to be truthful and we have made the decision to drop our sponsorship and support of Protech. If you go to his stream now he will be compensating for this and will be in damage control mode. Don't buy it.

FromPSky using cropped images to make naive` sponsors fall into the trap, for the record this guy iverysmiles is just a satly fuck who's been harassing my stream for over a year now, so anything posted by this lamer can be taken with a grain of salt and it's all ** LITERAL ** lies

The fact of the matter is that Protech raised over $1600 dollars from viewer donations, making it very clear to his viewers that this was money urgently needed to get a necessary operation done on his wisdom teeth. He even called it the "Cure Protech fund" and had banners about it blasted all over his stream.
Once he reached his donation goal, he set a supposed date to get the operation. When that date came, no word about the teeth. Then he's got a new date. Then that date comes, he gets a new date. Keeps stalling, never gets the actual procedure. Anybody tries to ask about it, he immediately bans them. He starts making excuses about how he had to cancel and reschedule his appointments because the doctor was "sick". Then he says he "overslept." Literally 4-5 times he was supposedly just about to go get the procedure, but some freak accident always happens and stalls it again, if you take his word for it. At some point, some of us viewers just started realizing that he hadn't gotten the procedure and maybe never would.
One time when he was challenged about this, he held up a "receipt" to the stream web cam to try to prove that he had actually already gotten the procedure. This receipt was simply an estimate given to him by the dentist, an estimate of what the operation would cost if he were to get it. It was not a receipt and in no way did it show that he had gotten the operation. Protech insisted that this document proved that he had gotten the procedure and proceeded to completely silence all discussion of the topic in his stream. Protech also later showed a PayPal receipt for $400 to a dentist, but (a) this was not for wisdom teeth removal, it was for some unrelated fillings, and (b) it was dated before the "Cure Protech Drive" even started, so it has nothing to do with this situation.
At this point it's been several months since the whole incident, and Protech presumably hopes that it will all blow over. But myself and many others who follow his stream, those of us who cheered for him and and supported him, were extremely upset about being misled. I don't have an axe to grind with the guy; I'm not a troll or a hater. I'd watched his channel for years before that incident. But not any more. I can't support him after doing something this selfish and dishonest.

If you go to his stream now he will be compensating for this and will be in damage control mode. Don't buy it. Even if his language isn't appropriate starting drama for it is pointless and will only result in a giant shitstorm and will not be allowed in this thread.

Again you have been proven without a shadow of a doubt 100% false live on my stream, with phone calls and documentation proving that your accusations are fake and all you are trying to do is give me a bad name, and every single person who watches my stream and supports me each and every month know this to be true. You are not going to do any further damage to me, as I've already proven to my fan base without a shadow of a doubt that you are wrong.
So keep trying kid, eventually it will come back to bite you in the ass.
As a streamer, we understand that this kind of thing happens, but you are now a case of harassment.

Protech is a very large, filled to the brim, heavy, steaming sack of shit, and that is why he's not featured. He turned the 2v2 community in to a shit-fest, just as he's done this thread, thanks in large part to his baseless hacking accusations and other ignorant obscenities he spouts on stream.
Glad to see people still watch SC2 though... just kind of sad it's the same old faces.

Too bad this is the case with many other featured streams. And for the record, I did not have ANYTHING to do with how this thread has turned out, and if you use your eyeballs and actually read the forum you wouldn't have posted what you posted.

Enough. Get on topic. Also ProTech as much as you want to defend yourself please don't, let TL mods handle any bashing.

edit: sorry november, didn't read your post before posting... can it stay?
I searched around a bit on the protech matter.
At least half a year ago, he got kicked from TL for "Racist , Transphobic , Homophobic chat" (or so he claims), and said that he didn't want to be featured again. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/website-feedback/281401-featured-streamer-list?page=82#1636
Also, regarding the flaming with ivery_smiles: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/user-streams/202566-stream-protech?page=32#630 Something made this guy turn around bad! At the end he claimed "Oh and to make matters worse, he just lost his No Scope sponsorship after less than one day. They cited "racist and discriminatory" behavior on his chat. Total BS, anyone who has seen his stream knows that he has never said or done anything like that! Just like he said, go look through ALL his vods, you won't find anything like that at all! Just more garbage perpetuated by people." Sooo, not really sure if the ivery_smiles is the same guy or not... Talking about the same things, but with diametrical opposite standpoint.
He also said that the first screenshot of "proof" (people like that word, don't they?) was out of context, whatever that means: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/user-streams/202566-stream-protech?page=32#632.
So well, I'm not really any wiser, apart from this protech business being a mess. But it seems like protech is pretty BM, throws politically incorrect swears around frequently, angry at TL for being defeatured and not wanting to come back. Or changed his mind on the last point, who knows? Also it seems like the iverysmiles ID is very closely linked to protech in one way or another...
But I guess this is not the place to have this discussion...

Still can't believe Winter is legit. Or rather, and to put it more nicely, I can't understand why he would have some many views. His stream is pretty chill and all, but it's not like he's super skilled and/or super interesting to watch.

A big reason that Winter and ProTech are so popular is because they play random. This makes games more interesting and leads to less balance whining. Also, this allows Winter to provide better commentary because he sees a matchup from both sides.
Ultimately a big part of streaming is personality. Destiny and Winter are not the best starcraft players out there, but they do have interesting personalities.

i'd like to give a shoutout to livibee's hard work & relentless determination, with her dedication to streaming countless hours & moving up the ranks of SC2. After reaching GM last season, she is quickly becoming the best female SC2 player & we should expect big things from her in 2015. WCS Season 2 seems like a real possibility. Keep it up Bee!

it's really -- let me censor myself -- not very smart to put Winter and Destiny in the same sentence if you're gonna volunteer to bring up the topic of skill...
as for this Protech situation, i was not aware of the details but im glad to find out more about it ofcourse... i have to say that even now i am not really convinced, only tooth-stuff is somewhat believable, rest of it literally screams hurt fanboys on crusade...
i suppose dealing with it will always be harder for smaller yet cult streamers, exactly like Protech is, because of how their stream works and how it allows more contact and this perception of deeper connection than you would get with a very popular streamer like iNcontroL. so when a streamer does something you dont approve, and you have mental issues, it can escalate quite a bit. cost of fame i guess. i would personally never go as far as to contact someones sponsor and purposefully try to destroy their income, but ive noticed that its becoming okay to comment on such actions and even invite others to do it... its shameful
in conclusion, i was hoping someone from NA could tell me what's the reason so many streamers can throw "faggot" and similar words around without consequences, while the so called "N word" destroys careers (Orb comes to mind)? is it a cultural thing? historic/white guilt? shouldnt it be that one makes you a racist and the other makes you a bigot? are those two things not frowned upon equally? what am i missing here? really wondering...

it doesn't destroy careers. destiny throws that word out on the reg. what destroys careers is the streams that don't get a lot of viewers on their stream throwing those words around, because he doesn't have a huge fanbase to back him up. so regardless of whether the streamer is actually guilty as charged or not, there's next to nothing that person can do to defend himself because as a streamer with relatively low numbers you'll get swept under the rug. that's pretty common knowledge though, and why it's easy for streams like myself to just turn the stream on and not even worry about what's said about you outside of the stream.
as for consequences from what I understand of twitch's ToS , simply using the " N-Word " or " faggot " would never result in your channel getting ToS'd. That to me would not be giving hate speech, people with half a brain can tell the difference when someone is simply raging about the game, as opposed to actually being a racist bigot or homophobe.

How do you stream for 4k hours and not get featured? xD because being featured is more than just hours streamed. I question daily why 'Kaityln' is featured... is there any specific reason why? i'm a top 8 masters zerg who regularly beats GMs, and i was only just featured a few weeks ago (5 days before the end of 2014) after streaming for over 2 years. i streamed 1426 hours in 2014 which is probably somewhere near the top 5. looking at one of the lists here are the numbers that i see: protech - 3994 hours (previously a featured streamer) winter - 2196 hours forgg - 2025 hours (rebroadcasts) painuser - 1946 hours agile - 1441 hours (rebroadcasts) kaitlyn -1426 hours so it seems like i was in 6th overall (potentially 4th if you don't include rebroadcasting) and again i've been doing this for 2 years and was only very recently featured. i'm higher rank in 1s than more than half of the top 5 (protech, winter, painuser) and i have beaten both of those featured players in 1s on ladder. just not sure why you're singling me out, i think that i work pretty hard and i was very happy to be featured recently He is singling you out because you are a girl most likely.
Pulling the gender card. One step away from equality.
