Observations

- It is clear when looking at this that WCS EU has been consistently the most popular outside of the Season Finals with Stephano vs Mvp in S1 2013 a highlight throughout all of WCS.

- GSL consistently struggles due to the time of day in which it takes place as AM are sleeping and EU are working or have school. Also none of the finals since Soulkey vs INnoVation have had the same level of hype with that series regarded as one of the best of the year simply because of the comeback.

- WCS AM has pretty consistent throughout.

- The high figures of the season finals indicates that people due enjoy watching koreans battle it out for high stakes.

- The season finals were generally the most popular events, concluding with the Global Finals.

- The hype generated by the Stephano vs Mvp series have gone unmatched and by looking at the figures it suggests as said time and again foreigner vs Korean finals have the most hype.

- Viewership for WCS is down this year especially compared with the early seasons last year.

Well, that's depressing. I would have prefered not to know those numbers. It makes the 2015 changes feel less like a odd choice and more like a last ditch effort

Yeh and I guess it kinda disproofs the whole "viewer numbers are stabilizing"-argument. Sc2 may been dropping less in terms of absoulute viewer numbers, but in terms of percentage, it's still pretty bad.
Im glad someone actually analyzed the numbers, because most conclusions and comments made by people in this industry are not based on raw data or facts, but rather wishful-thinking.

All I've gotten from this is that Season Finals were awesome and that EU has declined quite a bit over the last 2 years. Regional finals look somewhat stable.

Well, that's depressing. I would have prefered not to know those numbers. It makes the 2015 changes feel less like a odd choice and more like a last ditch effort

How many times does Blizzard have to say they do WCS as a passion project for people to stop worrying about "last ditch efforts" and closing shop? It's already nothing more than a money sink for them as it is, so if the average viewership drops or increases by 20k hardly has an impact. It's all an incredibly small cost for them in the grand scheme of things anyway.

They'll keep doing year after year until after LotV comes out and they realize they won't make much more money off SC2 and drop the whole thing. Hate to be so negative but I'd put a significant amount money on it happening.

I guess I should give up my super secret dream of becoming a pro someday

- The season finals were generally the most popular events, concluding with the Global Finals.

- The hype generated by the Stephano vs Mvp series have gone unmatched and by looking at the figures it suggests as said time and again foreigner vs Korean finals have the most hype.

- Viewership for WCS is down this year especially compared with the early seasons last year.

Well, that's depressing. I would have prefered not to know those numbers. It makes the 2015 changes feel less like a odd choice and more like a last ditch effort

I think you would be surprised as to how worth it WCS is for them. As marketing dollars go, its pretty in cheap and as long as they have games like hearthstone out there and keep the blizzard name in peoples minds, its likely worth it. And we don't know what world SC2 will live in after they release LotV. I would expect it to run at least 2-4 years after LotV or maybe longer if they do other stuff.

Depending on the speed of release, they would do it all the way up until they release Warcraft 4 or Titan. You forget that they get to run ads for their own products to 10-30 K(per region) people every night WCS is on. I've heard it some of the cheapest ad dollars out there for Blizzard.

I'm assuming that they will fund the esports scene for Hearthstone/Heroes instead of SC2 WCS, since they're newer products and they can make more money off of them after LOTV has been out for 2-3 years.

I think Hearthstone is already getting quite a bit of support, although I don't follow that game closely.

It's entirely possible that they don't drop SC2 WCS, that would be amazing for us. I'm just not that optimistic about it.

This seems to be getting blown out of proportion in a lot of ways. Firstly lets look at the WCS EU which seems to be the focus on the last page or 2. Is there really any need for concern over this region? So far as i can tell pretty much all the Koreans playing in this region will be able to continue to do so. It will be basically unchanged going into next year. So i don't really see what all the fuss is about.

The only region which seems like it will be hit hard is WCS NA. There are a few issues to discuss here though. Firstly how many Koreans will be affected. So far as i can tell only polt and violet currently have visas. There is still 5-6 months before the next WCS season so there is quite a bit of time to pass. Have any Korean players made a statement regarding this? How many players will be forced to leave and how many will be able to stay? Without this info it's hard to really judge what impact this will have.

The next issue i see being commented on is how this will impact the quality of the scene. Personally i see this as a non issue. For the most part the Koreans who compete in WCS NA do very little to actually improve the scene quality wise. In EU this is a legitimate concern because those players actually do play and train on the EU ladder. The NA ladder is a wasteland of talent, none of the Koreans play there and even the top NA players avoid it because the competition is so shit. Having Koreans in WCS NA has done little to actually improve the skill level of the scene. If anything we need to be encouraging the players to actually become apart of the scene, maybe this move can help achieve that.

Yes, and that's why people are currently watching "WTB European". I also think that many more tournaments could be more "local".

Well around 8-10K watched the finals of a tournament showing the supposed 2 best european starcraft player (I guess its the 3rd-to-4th best given Snute and Bunny not participating). I don't think that's particularly high given the quality, and looking at the viewer numbers for the semi-final or final can be misleading. Rather, it's imporrtant to look at viewer numbers in the group stages of a 32-man tournament since that will contain a lot more medicority. I believed that it just had a couple of thousands.

Watching the very best foreigners is always gonna create solid viewer numbers, but watching the 30th best European isn't, and that's the main problem with the WCS change as it rewards medicore foreigners instead of the "very best foreigners". We can still see the latter battling it out against Koreans (or each other) in the current system.

I do agree with you that there is a market for "best foreigner"-tournaments, but I don't think WCS EU or WCS NA should be that place. I guess a middle-ground I could see would be to have a region-lock but combine EU and NA (in order to increase average skill of foreigners) while expanding upon WCS Korea.

There is some serious bullshit in this post. Comparing WTB European viewership numbers to what can be expected from a WCS event is ludicrous. This was an online only tournament with basically no production values. It was casted by 2 relatively unknown casters and had essentially no promotion or awareness leading up to the event. It also had a very small prize pool and no WCS points up for grabs. 10K for a tournament on this scale is fantastic.

Lets also examine the quality of the players actually in this tournament, specifically the players in the top 8 when the tournament was reaching those sorts of viewership numbers.

Pig - Australian player who as far as i can tell isn't currently in challenger league in any region (though that isn't representative of his skill). Outside of top 125 WCS ranks
lilbow - Knocked out of challenger league by Krass, Outside of top 125 WCS ranks
targa - lost 3-0 in challenger league this season to showtime, Outside of top 125 WCS ranks
welmu - still in premier league, 2nd in his group to TLO. 31st in WCS rankings.
vortix - still in premier league 2nd in group to harstem, 30th in WCS rankings
demuslim - knocked out of challenger league, 95th in WCS rankings
marinelord - didn't even make challenger league, outside top 125 WCS ranks
mana - remains in premier league, 46th in WCS ranks

That's hardly the crop of European talent that was pulling in the ratings. It's also hardly an example of the most popular EU players either. No grubby, bunny, snute, ret, TLO, stephano for example. There was heaps of EU talent missing from this tournament.

Also you say you have to judge by how many people would watch the 30th best European player but that's exactly what we got here. 5 of these top players aren't even in challenger league and one of them isn't even European. To pretend like this event is somehow the bar for the viewership that an EU only event could reach is laughable.

Also my memory might be failing me but i thought there was an EU only WCS qualifier which stephano won which got 100K plus viewers. Back when there were big regional qualifers. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me but i'm sure i remember that.

I'm thinking along the lines of puCK, Major, Petraeus (plays WCS AM), Masa. Could throw in State there as well, and I'm sure there are others - I don't follow the American scene as closely as I do the Korean, but I think American players performing better has been a visible trend lately. Do you disagree?

I think the current WCS system has helped the top 10-15 best foreigners in making the next step as they now are playing more actively against Koreans. Previoously it seemed that foreign players could only beat (B-team) Koreans under the patch-zerg era (or when Stephano was at his heighest). Today, we havel ike 10-15 foreigners that consistently can go toe-to-toe with solid Koreans (defined as thus I would rank around top 10-50 in the world)
With more money going into the foreign scene and less to the korean scene, I believe the amount of B-level korean players will drop, while the difference between the 5th best and 30th best foreigner will even out.

In my opinion, I prefer the current system over the new one. I think the issue with the old one was that Kespa Koreans just got screwed in terms of WCS points, but I thought the system of having players such as Polt, Violet, Jaedong, MMA etc. battling out against the best foreigners is really important. Having a decent mix between koreans and foreigners seems optimal me. Only (or like 90%+) foreigners will just result in a too low level of quality for my taste, and given my observations of what viewers actually watch, I think they by their actions agree with me.

For the most part the Foreign players currently challenging Korean players are European or were already capable of doing so (scarlett and major for example). The NA scene has had some improvement but nowhere near on the same level as EU has despite having far more competition in terms of Korean talent.

You've been very active in this thread and your entire premise is based off a hypothetical situation. You have absolutely no idea how many Koreans will be competing in WCS NA or EU next year. In fact the players you list (polt, violet, MMA, Jaedong) are all likely to remain in WCS NA and EU next year, except maybe Jaedong for other reasons. At the moment you're just just screaming that the sky is falling with little to base it on. If and when we find out that all the Korean players are leaving WCS NA and EU (which i don't think will happen) then we can come back to this discussion. I disagree that would be as catastrophic as you make out anyway but i'm not convinced it will even happen which makes the discussion kind of moot.

We are only speculating on what Blizzard will do, but I have to agree with Plansix. Other game companies have to spend millions on marketing and advertising; I doubt Blizzard is paying more than a million a year for WCS EU, NA, and GSL.

It's definitely a passion project; and a money sink; along with a marketing strategy. They need to keep people interested in the game, and they realized to do that the audience needs to be engaged with the players. Games have a life cycle, but if pros continue to play competitively, that life cycle extends longer and longer.

I don't know how much Blizzard made from sales of WoL and HoTS, but I am pretty sure it was several million dollars. Even the sales of LoTV could carry the WCS system for 10 years.

I think Hearthstone is already getting quite a bit of support, although I don't follow that game closely.

It's entirely possible that they don't drop SC2 WCS, that would be amazing for us. I'm just not that optimistic about it.

Well eventually they will drop it, or let it relegate to a small hardcore audience. All it takes for SC2 to fade into obscurity is a better RTS game, but at the moment there isn't any. LoTV will inject new life, but three or five years from now a competitor will make a better RTS; it's unavoidable.

We will see what product will net more revenue, although Hearthstone is incredibly popular. Heroes is still under some shroud of uncertainty while under development. If they can rival LoL, Blizzard will dominate the e-sports industry, but even if they push a smaller game (Smite or HoN) out its still a win for them.

Blizzard games have life cycles almost unheard of, you can still find diablo 2 in many retail shelfs

I always wondered how much sales they get from older games.

You can also find War3 Battlechest.

This seems a little sensationalist dude and I have to disagree, I don't think enough companies are making RTS's for this to ever happen tbh.

If anyone is gonna make a game to take SC2's place, it'll probably be Blizzard with SC3 or WC4 or whatever (which I'm cool with) and this is dependent on if they even WANT to make more RTS's. I hope they do of course as they've been doing it since day 1.

Companies won't try to make a better RTS knowing that SC2 is still on top, but years after LoTV comes out they will try. Will they succeed is still questionable, considering how difficult it is to balance an RTS into an e-sport.

But the competitors will learn from Blizzard, and out of the woodworks will be several new RTS games that will try to beat SC2. Its the nature of any industry. What is the competitor doing, and how can we do it better? Look at World of Tanks, there is already a competitor called Tanki. I personally hate WoT, but that is just a preference.

I did word it a little sensational, but I feel that it will happen eventually.

I would love it if every publisher/developer tried to beat SC2, but failed miserably. This would give our scene such a boost in longevity. I hope for it, but don't expect it.

edit: On another note, loved your stream of some of the IEM Toronto matches. Thank you for doing that, I know it was at an akward time for you. You did the community great justice!

I honestly think there's a lot here that you don't need to be worried about, I got a lot of faith that SC2 will continue for many years to come with no direct RTS competitor and count on Blizzard support in the form of WCS and other things. I don't think companies aren't making RTS because of SC2 being on top I think they aren't really making them because of how it's the less popular genre in multiplayer.

But yeah, tennis is far less popular than football but it's not gonna die if football is doing well. I expect Blizz support for a long time and am very excited and equal parts curious to see how WCS 2015 plays out.

Also, thank you man! Appreciate the kind words glad you enjoyed the stream :D

I see what you are saying. Sometimes I needlessly worry about the future too much.

I am also curious about WCS 2015.

When have they said that? Not doubting you I would just like to read it myself.

They have said numerous times that it is a thing they put on for the fans to enjoy, not to make money. I can't find the quote from Kim Phan, but she pretty much has said as such. Clearly they are getting what they want because they keep doing it year after year.

They'll keep doing year after year until after LotV comes out and they realize they won't make much more money off SC2 and drop the whole thing. Hate to be so negative but I'd put a significant amount money on it happening.

I guess I should give up my super secret dream of becoming a pro someday

If WCS lasts until 2017 we should be happy and consider that a success

i wonder if i'll still be around in 2017
