hi TL. I'm curious about your opinion about player statistics used in tournament, more specifically WCS EU & NA.
I'm personally getting a bit bored by the same "Player X is 5-3 on map Y compared to Player Z being 4-2" or simple head-to-head "Protoss Player X is 60% in PvZ while Zerg player Y is 55%". I'm not saying these statistics are irrelevant, I just think there may be other statistics that create a more interesting pre-game discussion.
Some examples off the top of my head (Please keep in mind that these are just my suggestions, I understand some of them would require a lot of time to gather and may not be as interesting):
Average game length
Average amount of nexi / command centers / hatcheries build in a game
Average amount of times initiating a drop relative to game-time (example: "Terran player X drops 1 time every 7 minutes on average in PvT")
Most maps veto'd per matchup (This probably needs to get reset per season with a new mappool, but I think it would make for some interesting statistics starting at the ro8)
Most made units per matchup (I think it would be very interesting to see the difference between 2 players (of the same race) if you would display the type of unit they have made in previous matches and how many of them. I wonder if you can gather this information by just putting the replays through some program.)

Those are very interesting ideas yeah, most units made per matchup would be interesting between players of similar race. I'm not very up to date on the statistical methods available to TLers, but I do love statistics so I would always find more information like this about players very interesting.

i'm with you!
more stats, winning rates per race/map& versus opponent etc.

I know this stuff isn't fully relevant to the game of starcraft, but I think more fun facts about the players personally as filler during the intro would be, well, fun.

takes a lot of work to generate these types of statistics. For game length and CCs built, it can probably be pulled out of the replays, but it's not always possible to have access to these. The number of drops can be subjective. This is will require staff to watch every single match to have ever existed and write them down manually.

I love the idea, stats are fun.

I know Redeye always makes a big effort to find some cool stats on players. I like seeing the win % in Proleague as well, so I'm sure similar things can be implemented.
I wish there were big stat collections for SC2, like how Halo used to be - there you could see how many people you had killed with a sniper rifle, for example, how many headshots, etc.
It'd be awesome to see how many marines you had made/lost etc. Your average APM in your entire SC2 career. Win rates since the beginning of WoL. Just cool things like that.

everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but i personally feel introducing a lot of wonky/irrelevant stats for "fun" would just encourage casters to fixate on those stats and come up with nonsense explanations for them or try to use them to describe a player, and i think that would take away from the actual analysis and commentary

I'm not expecting these statistics to be measured for every tournament / match. This is why I mentioned WCS NA & EU, I imagine they would already have all their replays of this year sorted and would be able to put their replays through some algorithm for most of my suggetions and have it automated.

Totally agree. Actually would love to see this implemented into the game directly and visible on the loading screen. That way players on ladder wouldn't be able to get away with, say, the same build order or cheese every single game.

Yeah I made a similar suggestion in the German Bnet Forums some months ago but it just got ignored more or less. I would be so interested in a new statistics page where you can see lifetime killed / build units - and - since gameheart (afaik) already supports overviews where you can see how many units got built / killed it shouldn't be to hard to implement.
I mean people who are not really interested in further statistics don't need to check these things out but I think there are at least some people who would like to see this.
As far as Player-statistics go: I know that in some tournaments (don't know which one though) they already show sometimes how many games the players won when the game was shorter or longer than a given amount of time.

WC3 had a lot of interesting stats avaialble within the Bnet website client, albeit it is a slightly different game. Had all sorts of breakdowns, hero choices, % wins on maps and breakdowns of all your matchups, number of times you used particular heros and the like. It's strange to me that SC2 has less data available that is stored on Bnet, instead some of the interesting stats being only available if you use something like Gears that trawls your replays or getting somebody to manually note things down (i.e intangible things such as 'number of drops')

This would be cool to see :D

I'd love to have more stats as well !

I know I sound like a broken record and it's taking way longer than I thought (I make video games for a living, you'd think I'd have realised things always take longer by now), but http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/starcraft-2/445761-quantitative-analysis-tool is hoping to do exactly that. I'm going on holiday next week so either I hope to have something up before I leave, or I'll get to work on it while I'm not working my normal job all the time.
Things I'm hoping to find out: Expansion speed vs winrate Number of unit x built before time y vs winrate (e.g. Number of Mutas built at 10 minutes vs Winrate in ZvT) Engagement location vs winrate (do you win more if you defend?)
I'm open to suggestions of what to check against.

Feel free to collect the statistics and make them available

I think this would be difficult because they won't release the replays, right? To have people track such stats watching vod would be way too much work. But it would certainly make commentary more interesting.
It would also be amazing if there could ever be a starcraft2-reference.com. Similar to basketball-reference.com/baseball-reference.com

Tournaments often release their replays. Other than that it's up to individual players to submit their replays. Sites like sc2replaystats.com have a number of replays uploaded, so there's scope for it.
