By the end of the first round, it was researched that proleague's online viewers per a unit time got tripled compared to last season in Korea. The article does not mention cable television numbers.
Also, the twitch channel had a peak viewers of 30 thousands during the round playoff Samsung vs. SKT, the game between Reality and Soulkey, the longest ever game of proleague.
In addition, the number was audiences who have visited Nexon Arena was also tripled compared to last season(/ time). Especially, during the first three days, more than a thousand visited the Arena.

Games like Reality vs Soulkey are very good for starcraft, they're unusual and have interesting interactions and it's neat watching the players try and think and react their way through. In it's special horrible way, Reality vs SK was amazing.
But we only should get games like that 3-5 times a year. If this becomes normal may Flash have mercy on our souls.

Flash is perfecting mech as we speak , he will crush all zergs with his Tank/viking/raven/turrets . Look at them tank / mines / turrets / covering half the map ! It's a side to behold .

David Kim is happy now, that game proved how fun SC2 is to play and watch considering the viewers. If all games would be like that SC2 would reach 1kk viewers sooner than expected. Haters gonna hate! Anyway good to hear the numbers go up.

Well the production values of proleague have been much better in this season, last year it looked like they played in some random dimly lit warehouse, and there were barely any audience watching.
Nice to hear positive things about the state of Korean SC2 for once!
Great! I knew it and hope things would go in that way! And with that MKP and Byun returns... SC2 best game evah, but people need time to understand this.

And that is why I hope Reality & SoulKey never meet in GSL, especially during the group stage.
this means advertising sc2 in KR is really successful. I just hope sc2 state gets fixed soon so that the viewer count gets retained and the viewer count may even get bigger.
This is what happens when your stuff is free. Growth is possible. I've been watching Proleague all season long, and have had very little reason or desire to watch GSL. When the SC2 audience was shrinking, it astounds me that GSL chose to go back to their restrictive paywall.

I think they are carefully rethinking their position within esports atm. They did broadcast blizzcon though and they are still named in the WCS 2014 player code thingy so there is hope. I just hope we'll see any kind of starcraft content from OGN this year, even if it's just a small showmatch.
SPO on the other hand may get into doing their own starleague soon at this rate. Really love what they did for SPL.

Also there's some novelty in these games that would get boring if it played out the same way multiple times.

my bad. last season i watched almost exclusively on youtube (even though i had a twitch subscription). there also seems to be a lot more people in the gom studio for gsl. things are looking up.
Watching games like Reality vs SK is kind of like watching a train wreck, it's awful but you just can't look away. This is great news in every respect, but one point of concern is that this could very well be a result of the novelty factor of these weird super long games. If this becomes a more standard approach to the game, it will get old really fast.
Viewership overall has looked pretty decent so far for 2014, not nearly as bad as I had feared, but I am little worried about ZvP and ZvT degenerating into turtle fests. I don't think that will have much casual appeal in the long run.

Indeed. I have seen 30k+ during Samsung vs SKT, while previous season Grand Finals peaked at 18k... Interesting thing - OGN global channel for LoL is usually about 30k-40k for regular games, which is not that much of a difference. Imo that says there is not that much difference in hardcore viewers (so the people who are willing to watch the best games even in unusual hours) but there is huge amount of casual people who just watch LCS and player streams.

yeah i personally think that if sc2 foreigners were more relevant (say, if we had 10 stephanos) sc2 would be still massive, a bit part of 2011 was foreigner relevance
Good to see ProLeague doing much better. It's also really fun to watch, and you could actually tell that audiences tripled by checking out the stream. Wish it was that awesome when I was in Korea!
If they want more viewers they should make the teams play one of each race every set. The amount of games that didn't have a Terran in them was just silly(especially because of PvP).

Good news, but it probably has a lot to do with the arena being new. Hoping it lasts and/or gets even better. Proleague is definitely doing everything right on their end -- they are not to blame for the struggles of Korean SC2.

That doesn't even make sense anymore these days. Protoss is not only stronger in every phase of the game, they also have literally a dozen of great openings. Terran can't even do the classic FE anymore, there's nothing left.
time to rain in on the parade but did it triple from one viewer to three?? Unless they release the figures the fact it tripled dosent mean much. In fact it probably means the numbers were really shit... cause tripling from 100k to 300k would be difficult in just one season, from 10k to 30k not so much. So it really would be nice to know what it tripled from.
I will give props to pro league for the production and the turnaround time between sets but no matter how good that is the games are still boring as fuck...watching Flashes first game of the season against that protoss still makes me want to burn every copy of SC2 ever sold... I will return now to my BW corner.

I wonder how much of these numbers are from OGN no longer doing Proleague, thus possibly shifting over a portion of the viewer base who would've otherwise watched the games on TV or at the OGN studio.

There are two other channels. One gives you hd for free but we dont have viewer numbers for that and the other one is dailymotion. 30k is really low these days for OGN Twitch. I would say its more around 40k-50k

We are so far away from that. Last year was our community being butthurt over not being number 1 anymore that's all. SC2 will stick around until star 3 comes out and the last place it would ever "die" is Korea.

It was dying when people were crying that it was dying.
It's up to the fans to decide whether the game continues on or the game dies.

The last hour and a half of that game was for lack of a better word a moment. Whether you thought it was good or bad it was still a moment that will live on for years to come and it was something you had to see for yourself.

Definitely story materials. I think we're not done seeing this game mentioned because of its length and the controversy around it!
And true, though sometimes a bit long, there was still action in this game before the fatal near-stalemate. But I still found it interesting after quite some time, as it shows a situation both players aren't used to
Proleague fighting! I gave in and finally signed up for Twitch for the express purpose of buying a subscription to Proleague (not that I've ended up using it that much....)
What I like to see is that Proleague is making/boosting newer stars (Solar, Byul, TY, Zest (yes yes I know 3 of those have been around a long time, what I meant was getting more into the spotlight)) and seeing how they stack up vs the legends like Flash and Soulkey. I think it can only improve with the addition of the ST players and the return of MKP.

Great analogy - it's unfortunate I can't get the image of oiled sc2 players 'returning triumphantly' out of my head
I love positive news like this, it seems we're lead to believe sc2 is dying hardcore, especially in Korea, so perhaps this is the beginning of the new trend, when sc2 makes a huge come back! Lol I have to hope, I mean blizzard essentially has made a good bit of sc2 free and I wonder if internet cafes in Korea reflect this with higher sc2 numbers
I hope this doesn't mean that Korean viewers actually like boring Swarm Host stalemates. The last hour of that Soulkey Reality game was so boring I started looking at porn in another tab.

No, because I generally don't watch nor care about pay TV networks. Also, Netflix doesn't have competitors who are much better alternatives who put out content with much fairer business practices that help actually build viewership for the exact same content (Competitive Starcraft 2 in this case), so your comparison doesn't even work here.

Maru, Ty and Flash still do exist, contrary to popular believe. If we are lucky, some of the balance map fixes should make it into the game soon, which should be plenty to fix TvP, depending on which ones they actually implement.
Tripling your online viewers isn't surprising. When they switched from regular TV to IPTV, it was a huge downgrade for publicity in the first place. As a result of the switch they lost a lot of viewers as SPOTV is a fairly unpopular broadcast channel compared to TV. Now that they've put more work into their SPOTV promotion and more people know that's where SC2 is they increased their viewership over time.
The problem is that this viewership is still worlds below what they had when they were on regular TV (ongamenet). They lost the masses.

1. My sig is about the paywall, nothing to do with Live Viewership. 2. And ultimately, restrictive business practices like that shouldn't be rewarded with higher viewer counts anyway. I'll gladly encourage people in areas where GSL is on in the middle of the night with no restreams to not buy into such restrictive business practices. Instead, I'll encourage people to watch tournaments where you don't have to be up in the middle of the night to watch, and support them by watching with Adblock turned off. I've even made posts detailing how to add ESportsTV to Youtube Whitelists because that's how much I want to support GOOD, pro-consumer and pro-viewership growth business practices.

Most hilarious sig I think I've ever seen on this forum.
Truth in humor.
The goal of a business, ANY business is to make money. Saying things like this is contrary to their primary goal and just doesn't make sense. Demanding that everything be free and "easy" for the consumer is great until you realize it's actually harder to accomplish their CHIEF goal and keep them in business. Great, all the VODs and everything is free, so why watch live? Just get by on ads(maybe) and make everything free because that's "fair".
On a serious note this is some pretty awesome news. it's refreshing to hear something nice for a change. Hopefully the excitement grows in Korea about SC2

Live broadcast is at 2AM, and I can't watch it in any shape or form without having to giving them money, thereby giving approval to such terrible business practices? No thanks, I'll watch competitive Starcraft somewhere else that's not on at 2AM, and support the alternatives the best I can, and encourage others to do the same until GSL either changes or goes under.
I supported GOM when they realized that a restream at a reasonable time was a good idea. I supported GOM when they had free VODs. Now that they have neither, I no longer support them, and will continue to encourage others to do likewise.

I gotta be honest. I tuned in to Reality vs Soulkey because I couldn't sleep and Twitter exploded over it. I watched the last 45 minutes or so (real time) with my jaw in my lap because I couldn't even. I doubt I'm the only one, and that probably contributed to the peak viewership at about that time

We had that for 10 years before this game came around.
Doesn't mention cable numbers since proleague isn't broadcasted on TV anymore. I'd be more interested in knowing if the overall viewer count went up. With only one consolidated source of broadcast (online) the online viewership should've increased. If it didn't that'd be worrisome..

There was no foreign BW viewership to speak off, no foreign sponsors, no nothing. You want to go back to that?
I've noticed that Nexon arena was almost full every time i watched SPL. But what makes me sad is the fact that SC2 is still struggling in terms of popularity (overall) according to gamenote.com.

Yes please return to your corner, no need to rain on good news. It gives hope that this may not be the last season of Proleague for SC2, if they were able to triple numbers from last season.
SC2 can use good news like this without someone having to bring it down. I mean yeah numbers would be nice, but the fact that viewers tripled is still nice. If it was from 10k to 30k online, that's still pretty awesome considering time zones and all. Not Dota2 or LoL numbers, but people shouldn't be expecting those numbers.

The problem is that this viewership is still worlds below what they had when they were on regular TV (ongamenet). They lost the masses.
Errr SPOTV is on regular TV, I can assure you, from someone who lives in Korea...

I was wrong. SPOTV Games (which is the broadcaster of proleague) is a cable channel, but it is only provided by 2 cable providers. I don't get SPOTV Games with mine so I assumed it was a online-only broadcast. My mistake, but my point still kind of stands. Not widely available whereas everyone has a good stable internet connection so online broadcast would probably the main source of viewership.

such entitlement
This is even more entitlement then some posters from europe lol
I was under the impression that Proleague got more viewers since it's at a 'reasonable' time to watch now for everyone. Nicer for EU, a stretch for us in the Americas (I live near NYC) but hey, I wake up at 5:45AM daily so I can catch some of it on my way to work. It's better than the alternative of last year where it would begin around 11PM and I'd finally go to sleep at 5:30AM on Friday 'nights' and Saturday 'nights'.
I mean I can't be the only one who woke up at 5:05AM for a few days straight when they had Code A (JANGBI!) and Code S (TAEJAAAAAA) and of course, dat Group of Death (Life, Parting, Flash, and Innovation) in WCS Season 1 Korea :D
Plus, we've got (more) teams for people who haven't followed Proleague in BW such as IM, MVP, and Prime. Now we're also getting Startale?! Just waiting for Curious to bring it!

Is there a difference between 'cable' channel and IPTV in Korea? Cause SpoTV Games is IPTV.

Dude, have you ever heard of timezones ? It's that little funny concept that results in many places of the world not having the same time.
Such terrible practice also to make people pay for something that actually costs money (you know, a studio, booths, PCs, etc?)
Seriously, I can't facepalm enough.... I'd need 4 hands.

Flash is perfecting mech as we speak , he will crush all zergs with his Tank/viking/raven/turrets . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfuaywRsScA Look at them tank / mines / turrets / covering half the map ! It's a side to behold .
