Boxer has stepped down as the head coach of SK Telecom T1 for unspecified health reasons. iloveoov, Boxer's former pupil and teammate, is set to replace him as acting head coach. iloveoov had previous worked for SK Telecom as a player coach in Brood War, and had recently returned to SKT after finishing his compulsory military service.
Boxer steps down after six months as SK Telecom T1's head coach, and almost a year on the coaching staff, having led SK Telecom to a 4th place finish in the previous season of the Proleague.
This is probably for the best, a lot of SKT fans were dissatisfied with how Boxer did last season. Hard to tell how much of it was really his fault though.

They only have 2 at the moment I think. 3 now with oov. Should be amazing. oov always had crazy BOs for Fantasy.
What I am wondering is what does this mean for Boxer? IMHO it's unlikely that Boxer personally campaigned for Oov's return. I mean Boxer was suppose to be the magic pill that will solidify SKT's dominance in PL and that has failed to materialized. And for Boxer to play a big part of Oov's return during a time of funding cuts and sub-par performance is simply career suicide. If Oov come back and SKT start doing well again, it's likely that public will contribute the resurgence to Oov's coaching rather than Boxer-Oov chemistry. But if Oov fails to make a different then Boxer as the head coach will still take most of the blame.
I think this is a upper management decision and it might be a sign that they are not happy with Boxer's result. One way to make someone quit out without firing them is to 'bring in someone to help you even when there is not enough work to justify it'. They did it to Coach Park.
nooooo he was the most handsome coach . He made some questionable pick during the season but the team got to the playoff and it was more the players under performing than his fault for their play off losses. Also innovation was beasting, SKT was actually the team that got closest to beating soul.

Totally this. It was rare for everyone to get hot all at the same time. Why's it always have to be Fantasy!?!
I feel like I missed some interviews or something based on some of the comments in this thread. Where was it suggested Boxer was a 'terrible' coach? Purely based off their winnings, he seemed average or better. They were the only ones to really even challenge STX.
Anyway, I can't be sad until we actually know what this means. Boxer slowly falling into the shadows doesn't sound right for a name as big as his. And I'm sure we all hoped his position as coach meant he was healing his shoulder, but I'm sure you still need to play the game quite a bit to be a good coach. Or at the very least be on the computer studying, which is still not the best for recovery.
Here's hoping good news will follow this unclear announcement~
This is a shock with the big announcement that oov was gonna return as a coach. I don't know why oov would return and be nothing less than new the head coach? Sarcasm aside seems like things are looking up for skt1 now. :D

I'm sorry, I know it must be a classic, but how do you actually pronounce "iloveoov"? I like to think oov is pronounced like "hooves" (without h and s) but I don't really know...
Boxer will most likely be the manager or asst manager of SKT1. He's really a player/businessman, so I suppose that's the next logical progression. If you think about it, he created his own brands + he runs his own PC Baang. It's unlikely that he'll go back to playing, since his health is affected too much.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist here, but anything related to Boxer in Korea is like tiptoeing on glass. There's absolutely no way in hell that SKT could say "Boxer wasn't living up to expectations as a coach, so we've replaced him" and likewise Boxer can't himself say "I can't perform as the coach these players deserve, so I'm stepping down". It would be pure media suicide.
If Boxer was genuinely being fired, or if he was quitting, this is really the only possible way out without someone being thrown under the bus.
Of course, Boxer may very well have health problems, in which case I wish him the best and hope it isn't serious.

He clearly has health problems. If you watch his documentary he had them then too. I think it was his shoulder that was always in pain.

I have a lot of faith in oov as a coach, but it's still sad to see Boxer get replaced. Ever since the decline of SlayerS, things haven't really gone Boxer's way in the SC2 era.
SKT has been doing pretty well in premier league with Rain, Parting, and soO but hopefully we'll see the others begin to show even stronger results everywhere else too with iloveoov as coach

To be honest, SKT felt like one of the teams that struggled the most with converting that insane pool of talent from brood war into sc2 (except Rain ofc). oov is like my biggest idol but to be frank I'm not sure if he is the man for the job right now, since he just came out of military service... After some time he was suppose to coach all members, which he said was really hard for him; to much. He said it was a big burden on him.

Man... iloveoov was such a BW monster. Watching him in WCG with tasteless casting remains an unforgettable experience. His involvement with SC2 though is "meh", as with all the other iconic figures struggling with that game.
On September 26 2013 15:04 saddaromma wrote: slightly off-topic questions: why sc2 players "retire" and dota players go "inactive"?
Afaik 'retire' means you will no longer play professionally and leave the team, while 'inactive' means that you're still on the roster but not playing, possibly on hiatus leading to retirement but with a chance of coming back.

Probably serious condition, I remember he had pretty bad shoulder problems which stopped him from playing. Perhaps he'll need professional treatment now.
I always said that Iloveoov was more of a coach/mentor than Boxer. Im actually happy that he got the position he deserved. I have nothing against Boxer, but imo he was not as good. Still he is legend and iconic player.
Hope he has some time now to really rest his body, sad to see him go, but even if it might be still a bit too early, what I wish for Christmas the most is BoxeR's return as a player!!! Love you, BoxeR, get well soon!!!

Coach Park said in an interview that after they replaced him with Boxer they asked him to Coach the skt1 lol team, but as he wanted to stick with starcraft (who can blame him) over wanting to stay with skt1 he decided to leave.
Sad news . Hope he recovers quickly if it's indeed his shoulder and that he'll find his rightful place in the scene once more. Somewhere I'm hoping he'll go back to BW even though he probably wouldn't be able to keep up anymore.

In the past, whenever there were dramatic news about a DotA pro retiring, sooner or later the guy returned to the scene. They don't just 'retire' in DotA, they're always coming back.

I always get the feeling oov was the better choice for Head Coach anyway, BoxeR should be more of the person behind the scenes. So maybe oov Head Coach, BoxeR comes back after he recovers and be assistant coach.
I know I read some where oov was the more people person between the two anyway. I just hope BoxeR recovers from his health and rejoins SKT. It would suck to lose another legend, now that Bisu and BeSt are gone.
he stepped down as head coach but wasn't his position promoted to Director of eSports at SKT or something? Maybe he will still be in that position and manage the team but oov will do the coaching.
So the protege takes over the master, and the master goes into hermit and train his mind and soul, comes back 5 years later and wins everything *in my dreams*

He kinda invented at the least 3 macro builds for terran including Fantasy build when he was the coach. Also, Boxer probably did not survive the burden of being head coach IMO.

That would make sense. In most sports you have different coaches for different roles. For instance, football teams will usually have specific goalkeeping coaches, since their training is vastly different to outfield players. I doubt the money is there for a team to have full-time Protoss, Zerg and Terran coaches, though...
If it's only because of workload then Oov coming back to assist him will be the best Boxer can hope for, so why not stay? On the other hand, if this is indeed about workload and Oov comes back then single handedly turn SKT around, what does this say about Boxer as a head coach? I don't see any other coach being hired so it's obvious that the management think 2 coach is enough.
I guess it really depend on how serious is this "unspecified health issue" really is. But with the wording/timing of Oov announcement(why not just tell us he is replacing Boxer if you are gonna to announce it a few days later?) I highly doubt that the health issue is the main reason for his departure. Also look how short the retirement announcement is, FFS this is Slayers_Boxer we are talking about, there should be a huge farewell party hosted by the heads of Esport and Yellow.

It doesnt say he's leaving, just stepping down from being head coach I think.
Boxer will probably help the players train certain things, I see BoxeR as the second hand as Oov. If I recall correctly when Oov became coach at SKT we saw Fantasy rise, this will be interesting to see
Boxer leading SKT to 4th place finish in the last PL. Possible that head management wasn't too happy about that even though they actually went down to the wire with STX and could've won the series(lost 4-3 both if I recall). Yea~, I remember they make it to Ace match. But Fantasy and Rain didnt manage to beat Innovation in 2 days.

I only remember one ace match Fantasy do proxy starport and his full medivac get stopped by widowmine and fail.

it's kind of surprising how iloveoov has received none of the hype the other ex-BW guys have, I guess it's because his army coincided pretty much exactly so that he had no chance to be involved at all in SC2.
But in any case, he's most certainly above July, bisu, stork, jangbi in the all time rankings, and comparable to non-disgraced savior and jaedong

Honestly I think this is a good decision for SKT. Iirc Boxer wasn't handling the situation the best way and I got the impression that he should have stepped in at the slayers drama earlier and more decisive. I therefore think Boxer isn't the best choice as a head coach making difficult decisions and such. But slayers BFH builds were awesome

Well, every story can have a silver lining. Hopefully BoxeR's heart is still in SC2. If it is then we could yet see the return of the Emperor in some form or another, whether it be as a player or as a coach, of either a well known team or a pet project of his own, and even regardless if he does something none SC2 related, I will always cheer for and support our beloved terran Emperor.

Hey I know IloveOOV, but not Babe Ruth. I thought Ruth is some beautiful Babe every1 noe about. Then I google it...
NOOOOOOOOOOO BOXEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Hope his health is OK.
Regarding his results as coach, i can't help but recognize a pattern i've seen a lot in another beloved sport, football (at least here in Europe) A lot of footballing legends who were amazing players of world caliber become dissapointingly bad coaches, but everyone still has extremely high expectations of them because of the results they had as a player. In my home Romania, Hagi is like that, but i think there are examples in every country But, on the flipside you have guys like Mourinho or Rafa Benitez who never played top football but make amazing coaches.
Coming back to SC2, it was obvious that when you take Boxer away from the keyboard and mouse and you try to make him coordinate people or do any kind of management, you're asking for trouble. Slayers was a prime example of this. It was my favorite team in Korea because of Boxer, but after i saw the reports here that actually Jessica is running everything (player contracts, team statements, down to even tieing Boxer's shoes !!?!), and especially after he left his own-created and sponsored team to become T1 coach, i started to realize that he's more like a leaf in the wind, not a strong manager or coach/leader by any sorts. An amazing, world-dominating player...but that was it. T1's results speak for themselves from this point of view, and i don't know if Oov can mend things. Coming back from military service with a heightened sense of discipline, he might be able to wip the team into shape, or he might just be another awesome player turned mediocre coach. We have to wait and see.
Hope you get well Boxer, you will always be in our hearts! But, stop trying to be something you're not.
Why should we be sad? He probably wants this change himself, as he has hinted too in earlier interviews. He can probably do amazing work for SKT1 if he has less responsibility. Like builds and tactics for a few select players.
I am a little worried about his health and what he wants to do, but we will probably find out soon enough.
kind of hard to tell what oov's gonna bring to the table that boxer couldn't. i tend to think that skt's placing last season was more due to the players rather than the coach. we'll see though
edit: i do hope oov can do a better job at developing fantasy.
I never see e-sports mentioned in the news here but Boxer leaving e-sports is currently the most read article on a finnish internet newspaper that I read. It's probably a lot due to the headline mentioning how much money he has made from playing a video game.
I'm not translating this very short article since it contains nothing more than some well known Boxer facts and uses kotaku article as source for the leaving e-sports part.
I just realized something. As of today there have been 3 SKT interviews after Boxer left, they consist of Fantasy, Parting, Soo. But not a single one of them expressed any gratitude towards the legendary Boxer, not even Fantasy! And what's more, 2 of the interviews even claimed that "the atmosphere has improved since Oov's return".

I don't find that hard to believe in Fantasy's case since BoxeR was in Ace and guess who coached Fantasy back then? The Gorilla Terran himself.

Bisu talked about Boxer when in today's interview. He said Boxer left right after him, so maybe his retirement has affected Boxer.

I don't find that hard to believe in Fantasy's case since BoxeR was in Ace and guess who coached Fantasy back then? The Gorilla Terran himself.
But Boxer coached Oov, so that make Boxer his Grandmaster? With the whole "respect your elder" emphasis in Korean culture, I find this whole thing very strange.

Bisu needs to stop blaming himself for everything. Boxer/SKT said it themselves, it's a health issue . Unless Bisu actually believes that his retirement has damage Boxer's health so much that he can't even do proper retirement announcement.
Also why the hell is everyone acting like nothing happened and even at times seem optimistic? If Boxer's health has deteriorated so much that he can no longer continue to do what he love, they should all be sad and say a bunch of "get well soon".

I wouldn't read too far into that. Maybe there's something, maybe there isn't. And sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. In the meantime I would refrain from interpreting ill-feelings simply based on silence.

Well aware of the 'elder' thing but you have to understand that Gorilla is the guy who made strides with Fantasy. Not BoxeR. He was out of the picture. No point trying to connect the dots in that case.
I'm sure he respects both, but he is definitely way more familiar with Oov. Boxer has a lot on his plate man and let him take care of his personal issues. Bisu's comments relate more to the 'respecting your elders' category. He was just being respectful and wanted to wish BoxeR all the best after retirement. It was more of a reflection. The other guys on the other hand have a job to do and cannot dwindle on anything so I'd say this shows their focus on winning and improving their game. Having a positive mindset is a great way to achieve victory. There is no time to feel sad for others. They must focus on themselves and what do you know. They're speaking a good game. As a coach this is everything I would want to hear because it would tell me their minds are in the right place to be successful.
when oov was amateur he was already better than boxer. their playstyles are totally different so it's rather silly to say boxer is oov's teacher. yea they've exchanged ideas, but boxer isn't the coaching type.
