It's not always about money. Or, ok, if you want to see it just in terms of short term money then yes, its better to be a big fish in a small pond and earn some cash from there. But, in the long term, if he wants to compete to be the best (and, therefore, earn a LOT more money from prizes, wage and sponsor), he will have to take the risk some time. He will never reach a GSL level if he don't play GSL, it's simply as that. No risk, no glory.
Edit: also, he doesn't have a guaranteed chance to get a big price! 1) because it's HotS, and 2) because there are some very good players like Mvp or MC.

Anyways GL Stephano!
I think IEM pays the plane ticket.

Yeah, with amazing jetlag and lack of practice. And we all know how well people play when they are jetlagged. But, hey know you, GOM gives you less than 5 days notice, just change your flight ACROSS THE WORLD and play in their U&D match. I am sure there is another flight to IEM in a few hours. International flights are like taxis right? On demand.

That is like setting a figure skating event the same week as the winter olympics, one week before the olympics. um i dont think they waited until today to schedule them. they were probably scheduled ahead of time and only announced once the player distribution was set. they probably decided there was no point in saying "up and down matches will be held on these days" before they even knew which group the players were in and when they're playing I don't think it really matters when GOM figured out the dates, what matters is the date they told everyone else. Let me put it another way, they provided him with less than 5 days notice of his match. I agree with that but ocnsidering the round of 24 just ended a few days ago there's not a whole lot of more time they have. plus it probably doesnt matter too much(normally) cause 99 percent of he players are going to be available and if there's a major tournament that interferes with multiple players gom does reschedule when possible. plus there's also percievedfairness. gom already gives foreigner seeds, it might look bad if they started rearranging their entire schedules for 1 player.

Didn't you notice last week on SotG when Artosis said they didn't even know the dates for the next GSL season yet? While IEM has had their entire season building up to this and its been known for months. Isn't Stephano's group right before his Proleague match? I was under the impression that GOM got the news that Stephano would be playing proleague that day and they scheduled him to play at 11:10 KST which is significantly earlier than usual and earlier than Proleague. I mean... GOM messing up is one thing, but this sounds more like a systematic mix-up. Of course, I'm guessing so I could totally be wrong. Wait, that's a good point. Why the hell was he entered into the Proleague line-up?

TBH, this is a huge insult to GOM and the GSL.
They have broken their backs to give Stephano a chance to play in their league, and him, being the spoiled brat he is, decides to not show up because he feels entitled to the GSL spot.
GOM should not allow him to play next season, since he clearly doesn't give a shit about GSL in the first place.
If I was Mr. Chae and the GOM crew, I'd be really fucking pissed off right now.

According to liquipedia, Stephano is suppose to play against SK telecom in pro league the same day (03/04). Will he forfeit his pro league game too? :-/

Very disappointing in stephano. Still want the feature on TL to remove all posts with the words "disappointing", "disappointed" and "disgusted" from my review. I don't know why people are grumpy about this. Why would anyone skip out on a full event to play in a qualifying match? GSL is nice, but not worth giving up a whole other event just for the option to qualify.
I think you're missing the point bud. What he's saying is that there are quite a few Code B players who are really good and always play in these cutthroat qualifiers but can rarely pull through. GSL is getting more and more stacked, as no doubt we've all noticed, which makes the qualifiers tougher as well. What he's saying is that there are a lot of great koreans practicing a lot and trying to make it through to Code A with very little success simply because of how insanely competitive the qualifiers are, whereas Stephano gets seeded, plays, loses and then forfeits his U&D spot, which even if he lost he would still be in Code A.
That's what I think SoOJuuu was getting at. It's always been the case with GSL, although I would argue that now it's more significant than ever, considering how many good players there are (especially since the Kespa switch).

I really think they were assuming he was going to play Proleague since 11:10 KST is way earlier than usual groups and enough time before his proleague match on. And he was listed to play in Proleague on the lineups.
I mean he has Proleague later that same day... that means his team thought he'd be in for THAT day. That implies his team didn't know about this until recently. It could have been a miscommunication all around about when the flights would be exactly since at the very least we know EG told Proleague Stephano would be available to play on that day. And I do remember players mentioning how they had to send in their schedules to GOM.

Call me an idiot but I'd pick GSL any time unless I'm truly desperate for money, which is not Stephano's case AFAIK. The benefits of growing your career by staying in a more competitive environment can't be overstated, plus there's glory to be found.
The point of him already being committed to IEM is pretty solid though, I guess it's natural for him to go considering he qualified a long ass time ago.

i dont think its that much of an insult honestly. gom probably knows in advance that the foreign players are going to prioritize foreign tournaments and not base their lives around gsl and since gom keeps giving invites they probably think its worth it to continue.

honestly from stephano's perspective i think it makes sense for iem. he does better at those types of tournaments he proabably wouldn't get through the up and downs(not saying he wouldnt but that he couldn't plan on getting through if that makes any snese) and iem is probably better from a marketing point. anyway gtg to class feel free to disagree sorry if this last thing isnt clear im short on time
