To be fair, Tear hasn't consistently been tearing it up in GSTL; so it's not like he's had a ton of results to fall back on.

And I don't think GSTL is a big enough deal in Korea yet where you can consider that 'substantial' success I guess.

Well asd aka Nuclear was an oldschooler, and the only one out of those 3 that played Code S once.

Reasonable these FXO trainees (more or less) are now looking challenge elsewhere, with KeSpa players taking up a lot of space, there simply isnt much left for players that already didnt make their breakthrough before KeSpa switched, and now would find it even much harder..

Well , best of luck to them!
I can't blame them, they tried their best and with all the Kespa players, it is hard for this caliber of player to make a break through. It sounds harsher than I mean it, but even if they stayed they probably would never qualify for a tournament or make their break through
Keep fighting FXO, you developed a lot of talent and I'm sure there is more to come!!!

Right before HOTS came out? You would think they would give the new game a shot at least. Good luck to all 3 of them.

Sad if you're a fan of them, I know I always thought asd was a pretty good and entertaining player, but not unexpected. StarCraft players are people too, and they get frustrated like the rest of us. A year or more of zero success in getting into Code S is definitely discouraging. It doesn't say anything to/for/about the SC2 scene, but rather how fierce the competition in is the GSL qualifiers.

HotS is different, but it's not different enough that it's going to make them on par with the best of the best, or push them through the qualifiers. If anything, depending on how Gom handles it, it could make qualifiers harder. So this is a perfectly fine time to call it quits.

I wonder if these players actually had salaries? I don't know their situation, but at some point if you're not making money from tournament winnings or a salary you have to move on. Rough spot to be in but I understand their decision and wish them the best outside of starcraft.

Odd to see three players retire at the exact same time when the team is still together though. Kind of makes it seem like this was more of a forced retirement so that FXO can clean house so to speak, maybe FXO wants to take a chance on some new players.

Whale, at first glance this looks like a sirius situation, but it's understandable since they tried for 2 years, but this still makes me want to asdfljfjfojgl and flip tables.

i wish these guys good luck with whatever they'll be doing now. i'm kinda sad especially about asd, who always looked pretty good when i've seen him play. and i guess i'm biased towards terran in general.

None of them have gotten good results recently so its not a surprise. They probably weren't paid by FXO and they were wasting their time doing something that they weren't good at. I can't see it effecting their GSTL team all that much since it pretty much relies on Gumiho, Tear and Leenock to win anyway.

lol? Whale was known for his creep spread and Asd for his micro. Both would come out in team leagues from time to time. The problem isn't their skill level, it's just that there isn't enough viewers or money floating around the sc2 scene to keep supporting so many pro gamers. As viewer numbers continue to decline, so too does the amount of professionals.

Actually, the viewer numbers doesnt decline, there are more viewers than ever, its just that there are more events nowadays, which means that viewers and money are more spread out, but rest assure; the total amount of viewers is actually increasing.

heh....as of right now on twitch.tv http://www.twitch.tv/directory

LoL 115k viewers.
Dota 2 18k viewers
WoW 13k viewers
SC2 7k viewers

If by spread out you meant watching other games then yeah, I guess thats about right.

Twitch counts HotS and WoL as seperate games, for one. And even then, who cares if LoL has more viewers at a specific time when you decided to click on the directory? The NFL always gets more viewers per game than MLB or NBA. Lets not even talk about golf and tennis. The whole, "SC2 is dying because the number next to LoL is larger" argument is so dumb it hurts my head.

Exactly this, and people have to remember that over the past year or so there's been a steady influx of LoL streamers coming over from Own3d. LoL has nearly always been more popular than SC2, but when both games were new almost every LoL streamer was on own3d and almost every SC2 streamer was on twitch. People are only freaking out now that there's a direct way to compare the two.

Back on the main topic, a lot of people are asking why they retired as they could get a fresh start in HotS. To put things in perspective, there will also be a large talent pool coming into HotS with a fresh start, a talent pool that didn't get to play WoL from release and was always a little bit behind. The people retiring don't want to play the rat race of getting to the top of the pack again with everyone on a nearly level playing field.

I really hope this isn't a foreshadowing of FXO being in trouble. The Sc2 scene keeps losing players and teams, it makes me sad. I really hope HotS revitalises things and that after kespa transition is fully integrated (if it integrates) that things can stabilize and grow.

Expect to see more of the lower-level pros to leave tbh. With all the Kespa players coming about it's not really worth it to keep playing when you're not the top level on your esf team. Lower-tier pros are going to keep retiring or switching games because it's just not worth the amount of work.
