A little later than anticipated but IRL work is swamping me down ... This is a cross-post from my blog, if you have comments please write them there.
Team : SK Telecom T1 - 4p
I really wanted to take Woongjin this round too but I couldn't managed to feel satisfied with my main team so I choose to downgrade. SKT might not win this round but they certainly have a lot of strong points here. They have the best one-two ace combo of all KeSPA teams (Rain & FanTaSy), and a strong third man in soO.
The issues they have come from the last player that they'll need to field. Among the remaining players only s2 has a winning record in R1, ParalyzE is 1-1 and the rest lost some games. We haven't seen sSak yet and since he qualified for Code A once, one can expect him to be fielded.
Captain : sOs - 8p
Players : My captain choice was really obvious. I'm a very rational in my choices (aka I don't pick KT and pray for the best) so I knew I had to pick a reliable protoss player. Why a protoss ? Well the match-ups are hugely favoring of them right now and KeSPA zergs struggles in the ProLeague format. Thus I had to pick someone among {Rain, sOs, herO, HerO, Stats}. Rain is way too costly, herO is inconsistent, Stats is good but Wooki was chosen over him in Week 1 and HerO is setting up for another year of crying on stage until he finally wins DHW13 again. sOs is a reliable player who played all matches for WJS. He was the natural choice for me.
Winner's League is a wierd format, one very difficult to predict and once you've picked your reliable ace, you are left with a few possibilities. I decided to go for a week by week approach in that I will pick players that I am confident will bring me point on the week I have them. This is obviously very tricky because I don't know the line-ups; as such I have to bet on starters and on players that will play a lot despite not being the best out there especially since there is a lack of good 4p players (aside from Cure).
First of all I need a cheap Zerg. Revival is the one I am going for. He plays for EG-TL a team that despite the plethora of its stars has a lot of commitment to honor - contrary to KeSPA teams, he is better and more well-rounded than Zenio and will play more the first week than Stephano or Jaedong will. He is also starting like Light, BeSt. I think both of them can win at least one game.
I then I had 8 points remaining. I needed another reliable players, one that would give me points no matter what happens. Wooki was my choice here. KT's streak is almost indecent and one cannot hope to see them continue like that for much longer but Wooki is a terrific PvP sniper. He starts against Dear this week and despite the latter being one of STX stronger player, he stands no chance against Wooki. Lastly I picked Bbyong, I don't expect a lot of him but he is the only terran on CJ that isn't a huge liability. He is bound to play games from time to time.
Anti - team : For a long time, my Anti-Team was bound to be {Stork, JangBi, hyvaa} but Stork and JangBi are actually the only viable players on Khan (RorO remains in let-down land) and they will play each game. Being Protosses they will win sometimes ... Furthermore there is a lot of risks involved since you have 2 (3) players that need not to perform.
As such I decided to pick Jaedong as the central point of my Anti. He won't play during the first week because he needs to prepare for other tournaments. hyvaa is a terrible player who boasts a terrible 35% win in SC2 in a team that I think is the worst (yes they are behind Khan). Lastly I pick Major, for the first few weeks, he won't play and he is on a weak team.

I love your picks. I had considered each of those players except Light, but decided to go a different path in the end.

our thoughts were quite similar, but i thought KT and especially Wookie were on an upswing and so i didnt want them on my team. Clearly i could be more wrong^^
and you didnt find a single point u could invest in WJS? I took a 2pointer instead of a 3pointer, so i could afford WJS, good decision imo

does anyone know how long it takes to update the scores in between rounds?

seems like R1CH isnt awake yet

they should accept volunteers to do the updates, unless its too much power for a stranger to have

Yea but I think they are working out the trade value differences. Like Revival should definitely go up, dunno if they have an algorithm for that or just winging it

There was some formula mentioned in older seasons/threads. I think the manual work is about entering all new results into the database. Generally, when they are in the mood, they can do lightning speed updates sometimes. So it does seem the delay until update largely depends on how much certain staff members benefit score-wise from these new updates. They'd rather prolong the current ranking if the old one looks better for them personally.

That's based on their respective achieved FPL points last round. Even having in mind the changes in this round, still the amount of expected points from KT, based on their previous round, would more than justify their cost. Even though being the most expensive team, KT in the beginning of R2 was the most cost-beneficial team of all teams, bringing the highest score per cost. Thus actually being the cheapest deal.

I used to refresh it too in round 1 like crazy, but I'm doing so bad in round 2 that I don't even care anymore ) I'm just gonna wait for round 3

Wasn't SKT the rational choice since Rain is the best kespa player and protoss are doing good, as well as having Fantasy top terran to clean up and soO as backup?
For all-kill format SKT looked like the better deal.

Sure, but I trust numbers. And they said KT. By a large margin. SKT was like the third or fourth team by cost-benefit.
I admit to have had exactly such dilemma - to exchange KT with SKT and thus free up 2 more money for a bigger player. But the difference in expected scores was just too high to neglect.

I would like to know, what algorithm you used to compute how much points a team should earn in completely different format (assuming you used R1 data in order to predict R2). Cause however I look at it, Rain/Fantasy/soO SHOULD have been better value then Flash/Stats/Wooki/Action/Crazy-Hydra in this format. Of course, nothing goes as we think
|
Ah but see, they SHOULD have been (much!) better in the last round too, isn't it so? But they weren't. (no idea why, really... for some reason KT just works, for now) I guess as a similar example, look at IM in many GSTLs when they failed to score well, despite having the 2-3 best individual players in the world, and more.
I haven't used a complex algorithm. Just reducing all team scores by some range of factors, because with the new format and scoring, the team as an FPL slot was supposed to bring lower score overall. And even then it looked that having the highest scoring team (per cost) would be worth the money over having some better player.

Thats basically why I pulled out the format in the first place. Because, actually, KT has deeper roster than SKT atm, even WJS and EGTL imo have deeper lineup. So all those teams should be actually doing better then SKT in standard proleague format (and they did, with the exception of EGTL). But in allkill, the double-ace combo of Fantasy/Rain + soO as backup, they should have been the best. And who knows, maybe they will. But man, KT actually does look very scary, Flash all-kill, Wooki all-kill. If they start with Stats next match and he all-kills also, it will be tough for anyone who doesnt have KT as a team.
