Victory music and Score screen
I want to first explain what I mean. I found some random videos from youtube to help me show the difference, hopefully since they are public its ok just to link them. These videos have been taged to the ending sequence.
- Final Fantasy 7. After a Battle you are greeted with the victory fanfare music, all the Characters are cheering . Then there is the score screen with the experience and items you received. This is probably the simplest example of what I am talking about.
- Super Mario Kart - Transition from final lap music to the character (Princess Peach) victory music and then to the score screen. It is a very fluid example.
- Call of Duty 4 - Zombies. Death comes and score screen popups with a nice transition, music and to a waiting screen that feels like your still within that game itself. A moment afterwards it becomes a bit jarring when it goes into a loading screen and then to the title menu.
- Ikaruga - Cinematic death of the boss and score screen.
-Marvel vs Capcom 3 - Very stylized cinematic death and victory monolog, then score screen
- Starcraft 2 - Victory fanfare (music) when there the victory is known and transition to score screen.
- Starcraft 1 - Very similar to SC2. Victory music and transition to score screen. Starcraft 1 has victory and defeat music for each races as well as different background screens.
- IPL Fight Club (random final game. spoiler warning). I wanted to show the between between a first person point of view game and watching a game with commentary. The difference is huge.
Campaign vs Multiplayer
When a match of Starcraft 2 ends there is victory music along with the score screen. The purpose of it is to congratulate you on winning the battle, but lets compare the campign to the multiplayer experience.
In Starcraft 2 campaign.
- You receive notice that the mission is complete.
- You receive congratulations on your victory, such as cinematic and music
- You are rewarded for winning the victory, such as experience, items, and story progression.
In Starcraft 2 multiplayer.
- You recieve notice that the match is over, with a "gg" or the other player leaving the game. Saying gg does not end the game, also sometimes the opponent can type the "has left the game" in a trick to have the other player surrender by accident.
- You receive a short victory music.
- Icons and Portraits once in a while.
The comparison is pretty one sided. Multiplayer does not add anything to the experience.
Possible Improvements
Random list of possible improvements that could be added.
- Have the score screen UI overlay inside the match, instead of having to exit the game and starting a replay.
After the winner has been decided, it could go drop down the entire UI and instead of the orbit view we currently have, you would just still be in the replay.
- Peepmode gg option. When you gg in the custom game peepmode. a surrender screen pops up asking if you want to surrender or not. When the player surrenders, the remaining player is declared the winner. Both players could essentially stay in the game, receive some kind of victory fanfare and score screen ui without exiting.
- Have a less jarring transition from victory to scorescreen.
- Have different more noticable victory music
- Have an option to toggle the "victory" or "defeat" effects could also be made. Just like blood or other game effects.
Anyone?
