Pretty happy with all the match ups the LG-IM/Jaedong/Flash got ^_^

JYP might have a hard time in round 1 and Dark has been playing well lately, hopefully Taeja is back to his best.

Mini vs. YongHwa should be interesting, Maru vs Losira should be hyper aggressive and good times.

You don't have to worry, Nestea is pretty damn good at holding off cheese. Plus Heart prefers to play most of his TvZs straight up if I remember correctly.

Actually, I think Nestea has a better shot if Heart cheeses. Nestea's late game ZvT is just not very good from what we have seen. But he said he does well in practice so who knows.

Let's see if Nestea's mechanical skill can keep up with his IQ. I hope it does.

*Waits for Sniper to come in last place on Wednesday*... Oh hey, there will be a Zerg if that happens... The Zerg that knocked Seed into Code A to be exact...

edit - I'm scared for MMA here... Yes, it's TvZ... but ByuL is damn good... This guy tore IM in half last GSTL season... YongHwa, Seed, Happy, NesTea - 4-kill... Would have all-killed if Moon didn't destroy YoDa in the starting map... ~_~

Also scared for aLive... Flying beat Mvp in his OSL ro16 group... (also beat Rain in the ro32...)

Also scared for JYP... cuz PvT...Yeah it's improved a lot, but still under 50% this year/30% overall... @_@

Wow poor Maru...
Classic got a pretty raw deal also
ByuN Seed rematch incoming?

YongHwa's group is interesting, he should roll over everyone (if Squirtle doesn't snap out of it soon). He definitely have sword potential. If he goes directly from Code A to GSL Champ, does he get a Zweihander instead?

Flash got an easy group... again, see if he can cash in this time

All your most likely outcome are 2-0... not sure if make sense

Actually, under the model I'm using, it's always the case that a 2-0 is more likely than a 2-1. Suppose the best player has probability p to win any single game, and the other guy has probability 1-p. Then

p > 0.5
1-p < 0.5

Now, the probability of a 2-0 for the best player is p^2, and the probability of a 2-1 is 2(1-p)p^2 = 2(1-p) times the probability of a 2-0.

This factor 2(1-p) is always less than 1 (since 1-p < 0.5), so the probability of 2-1 is always smaller.

BTW, think you can incorporate something like Bill James' temperature gauge?

Actually, mathematically, 2-0 for the favorite is always going to be the most likely outcome.

Ah I thought by most likely you meant "expected outcome", not "outcome that comes out the most in simulation". That makes more sense

I remember a year ago in Code A you could always tell who would make it through. Now its just..... damn, so stacked.

After watching his Code A games last season and Code S games this season... I really hope he loses... His play really isn't at the caliber of the others I've been watching all year... He sort of lucked out with his bracket last season... Hopefully TAiLS can make it past the ro48 for once this season... He's always fun to watch...

edit - By "lucked out" I mean he faced First, Genius, and Heart... and won all three matches with a 2-1 score... Right below him there was Creator, aLive, ByuN, and MC in one bracket... talk about underwhelming bracket being right above overwhelming bracket... ~_~

Ah I thought by most likely you meant "expected outcome", not "outcome that comes out the most in simulation". That makes more sense

Yep!

Btw, your question inspired this.

I really need to get back to work now, lol.

YongHwa will drop out of GSL in a random PvP and all is right in the SC2 world...

Looks like some great match-ups, GSL's player quality is insane.

I can't see MVP not making it back into code s. Even without hands and a neck, he outclasses the people in his bracket.

Well, here's what I think (and hope) will happen:

+ Show Spoiler +
Taeja > Dark (Taeja's just more experienced and solid all around)
Genius > hyvaa (Genius is usually wonky, but when in-form, he is a dominating force in PvZ)
JYP > Noblesse (JYP has worked hard on closing his holes on PvT, and has some decent wins as of late in the match-up)
Happy < San (Happy is more of a TvT and TvZ specialist than a TvPer, while San has been in good form as of late)
Sparta < Fantasy (Fantasy is really good with TvTs, and has most likely improved much more under BoxeR's tutelage)
MC > Bravo (Come on, it's MC.)
Maru < LosirA (Maru has been off his game as of late, and LosirA looks like he has something to prove)
Sirius < Jaedong (Jaedong's interview reveals that he's taking the game a lot more seriously now. We all know what that means)
B4 < jjakji (Back in jjakji's heyday, he was a monster of TvZ. Maybe he's gotten a bit of that luster back)
Rain > Dream (It's hard to have good dreams in the rainy season)
Supernova > First (Supernova is still a scary player when he's on groove, even with the recent disappointing results)
Bomber > Classic (Bomber is back, as proven when he narrowly lost to Stephano in a best of 9, a score of 4-5)
bbyong < TAILS (TAILS should be able to show his GSTL strengths in GSL sooner or later)
Heart < Nestea (Nestea looks a little bit revitalized after spending some time in the qualifiers)
Byun > Terminator (Byun is crazy strong when on point)
Seed > Center (Seed disappointed in this season, but he's still a very strong player)
Shine < jangbi (It's taken a while for jangbi to get in-form, but now that he has, he should be pretty strong)
Squirtle < Miya (For all Miya's whining about ZvP, Zergs in the late-game are almost unstoppable)
mini < YongHwa (YongHwa's first Code A. I doubt he's planning to go back to Code B)
Flash > Brave (Flash is strong at TvP. He's also Flash)
Baby > Brain (Baby has more experience sadly)
MMA > Byul (Get back to Code S, MMA. You don't belong in Code A)
Trap > asd (asd is more TvT. This is the only wild guess I have though)

(in your post) bold = I agree, italicized = I want both to advance, underline = I couldn't care less about these results, nothing = I disagree.
Why I disagree with these: + Show Spoiler +

Sparta > Fantasy because Sparta only defeats the greats. As proven by beating NesTea and falling.
Shine > JangBi because he balance whined in his inteview about Zerg being completely OP and Shine isn't an ordinary Zerg. The TSL guys hype him a lot in interviews.
Squirtle > Miya because Miya FAILS HORRIBLY vs. P... He went 2-1 against a random untranslated probably high master player in round 2 of his preliminary... Plus it's Squirtle.
mini > YongHwa because Code B is nothing without the Code B bonjwa. He'll get nervous and fall because he'll make crucial mistakes in a PvP.
Brain > BaBy because Brain made it to the finals of a preliminary 2 seasons in a row... That's more than BaBy has done in the GSL...BaBy has yet to win a match in the GSL.

Depends on what you meant : If by that you mean that the average level of players who remains in Code A over multiple seasons and players who do the same in Code S is very near, then you would probably right. But Code A beginners have a tremendous gap to fill when they qualify for the first time and are most likely going to go back down.

I agree with this for the most part. There's a few that stick out, such a YongHwa and ByuL... If ByuL had a different opponent I would say he'd definitely be at least a Code A mainstay... Who am I kidding? MMA might fall to this guy... T_T

Point 1: I can see that happening
Point 2: Shine is a TSL zerg, and the TSL zergs are all top-notch, which is why I can understand where you're coming from.
Point 3: This is where I voted for the underdog.
Point 4: Haha, I hope not.
Point 5: True, true.

This season's code A is most definitely stacked. Which is good, because this proves that the players that are all on Code S and Code A actually deserve to be there.

Fucking hell.

The ones I'm interested in are:

TaeJa v Dark
Genius v hyvaa (poor genius ;_;)
Sparta v Fantasy (that should be easy but anyway GO FANTAA~~~~)
MC v BrAvO (Man, how many name does this guy have. I liked his playstyle though in PL, so hopefully he pulls a surprise)
Maru v LosirA (poor LosirA :/ but Maru's in a hard slump so he might fall out)
Sirius v JD (JD must get through at whatever cost @.@)
SuperNoVa v First
Heart v NesTea (just would like to be relieved that NesTea's pulling through)
ByuN v Terminator (feel like this could be a lot of fun)
aLive v Flying (good players of the MU)
Shine v JangBi (rooting for JANGBANNGGG)
BaBy v Brain (the names :D)
MMA v ByuL (this could be super fun if MMA is playing well)

And then the next round might include some sick matches once again, like:

MC v BrAvO against RorO
SuperNoVa v First against HerO
Bomber v Classic against GuMiho
aLive v Flying against Mvp T.T
JangBi v Shine against sOs
MMA v ByuL against Keen oh jesus christ that's some bad luck

TaeJa has a lot of events to attend Dark not so I am for Dark here.

Isn't day 1 of Code A on Friday therefore TaeJa can play him before all the events? ~.~

edit - All of Code A round 1 is before Dreamhack Winter in 2 weeks so your argument is invalid...

Supernova vs First is also pretty beastly.

Woah there. So many good matches.

MMA vs Byul and Maru vs Losira are my favourite two matches. Also, if Fantasy wants to go to Code S directly he'll likely face either MC or Roro :-) Flash vs Baby would be nice too. Jeadong could play only ZvZ if Hyun gets kicked down, which i don't hope as i like Hyun and Jaedong!

Maru vs Losira, seriously? God damn it -_-

It could be worse, though. That seems like the only matchup where I want both players to stay in GSL badly.

What does it matter? Go ahead and buy your yearly premium sub (with friends if you're short on money -that's what I'm doing) and you can watch all the shiiit! I haven't paid for any other starcraft tournament ever and I am not regretting it since this is so much better, and costworthy than anything out there really.

Didn't want to be off topic this heavily, sorry.

Do we know which games are played on the first day?

YongHwa should make it through his bracket if he can play without getting nervous. I remember YongHwa tearing through Zenex in the first GSTL, and being so nervous in the interview that he couldn't speak. I really believe the guy is a genius, but we'll have to wait and see if he can show his best form.

Lots of epic matches, this Code A looks even more stacked than Code S even. O-o Looking at who plays, there are a lot of matches where I want neither of the player to fall into Code B, for example Nestea vs Heart, Losira vs Maru, San vs Happy and First vs Supernova. Maybe a bit of IM bias showing through. ^.^;;

- I'm going to rage hard if Yonghwa loses to Mini of all people.

- Seed vs Byun rematch looks likely

- Flash vs Baby is also likely :o

- Jangbang is probably leaving early

- MVP could have a tough path to that Nestea award.

- Nestea is coming home.

I don't believe I have ever seen someone abuse TvZ lategame in a more abusive annoying way. I am a huge Zerg fanboy and always cheer against him.

Am I missing something?

This is the former SlayersDark that's played a grand-total of 3 televised TvZ right? Or is tlpd off and he's actually done a ton more online tournaments or something.

Anyways, glad to see he found a team. I like to think it was Boxer looking out for him (although I'm sure he doesn't have total control over personnel decisions there).

it was march 2011 for his last semifinal, but as for actually recent results he was basically beasting every qualifier except for GSL. He qualified for OSL, won the Korean MLG qualifier, etc. He actually did fairly well for NSH in GSTL on multiple occasions. I think everyone just kind of lost faith in Happy after the RorO series even though it was a different matchup.

mediocre kespa Terrans make for good TvT

I just hope that it's better than when DRG got knocked out in last place in his group last night...

what does a consistent top 16 Code S player have to do with some Code A Terrans?

Well calling flash a mediocre kespa terran is just plain ignorant. A "mediocre" terran wouldn't place top 4 MLG in todays sc2, maybe in early sc2, but not today. Don't try an insult players by calling them "mediocre" just because you have a thing against kespa players especially when they qualified into code A.

When I think of something else, something will go here

I largely agree with you, but what would you say of First and Alicia?

Pumped for GSL's moving onward. No more easy matches and every Code A will be a dogfight.

Interesting matchups, and code A is looking as scary as Code S.

Hoping LosirA's confidence is going to get him back in code S.

Flash shouldn't have beaten life the first time around, if you watched his games he wasn't playing like a top tier terran, his opponents just flopped with bad mistakes. Other mediocre korean players have regularly made the top 4 of MLG's. If he'd won it, then we could talk. He's still got a ways to go. He's certainly got the talent though.

Code A should be fun to watch this season. Kinda disappointed that Dark and TaeJa face off against each other for their first match. Dark was an interesting/fun player to watch when he was with SlayerS and I wanted to see him do well in Code A and with his new team, but he's going against TaeJa and I can't root against him.

Yikes.

The first comment wasn't kidding. None of the KeSPA players are playing each other in the first round even when there are so many of them, which is odd.

To me it's yes and no man.

I cannot really compare the two tournaments due to the format.

It's like playing different difficulties of mine sweeper with the biggest setting.

For me MLG it's like playing on the easiest setting where you have ten to twelve landmines; whereas, Code A/S falls under the advanced setting where almost every player is a landmine but at least you have more time to plan out your every move whereas the other style is more like kamikaze.

Flash will be tested.

Flash has a simple bracket, he'll make it. Sad about JD getting ZvZ and being in a tough bracket. T_T

Code A is definitely much more interesting with all the KeSPA guys making it through Code A qualifiers.

I think there is something to say about MLG's shotgun format where you have no time to really prepare for a particular opponent and instead have to rely on your raw skill and experience to carry you through a 3-day long gauntlet of some of the best players in the game (an not depends if you get lucky in the brackets). You also have to deal with the lively crowd being 3 feet from your chair at times, or not even having a chair at all.....*nudge* *nudge*

Your conclusion may be correct, but the math is faulty. You're assuming the probabilities are independent, which they are not. Good work either way though ^^

I think GOM did a good job with the premium/free picks. Fantasy/MC/Jaedong/Taeja/JangBi/Nestea are the players I care about and they are all on the free stream.

Prediction Time!

+ Show Spoiler +
Taeja > Dark (Although I think Taeja will win, I will be rooting for Dark so hard..)
Genius < hyvaa (Hyvaa is good. Depends if Genius has soul or not. For now I guess he doesn't.)
JYP > Noblesse (I like JYP and he worked on his PvT. This will be a lot closer match than many ppl think though. Noblesse cruised through 2 Code A preliminaries in a row.)
Happy < San (ManZenith!11)
Sparta < Fantasy (Pay attention! He will dominate!)
MC > Bravo
Maru < LosirA (when in doubt, Z>T!)
Sirius < Jaedong (because Sirius doesnt want to get killed by fangirls :p)
B4 > jjakji (jjakji doesn't look so hot as of late and it is ZvT...)
Rain > Dream (I actually feel sad for Dream)
Supernova < First (First is sick good. Supernova not so much anymore. That's about it.)
Bomber > Classic (Bomber didn't win MLG nor LSC, so he shouldn't be eliminated in first round this time)
bbyong < TAILS (I wasn't impressed by bbyong too much from what I saw. And Tails imressed me in GSTL)
Heart > Nestea (I want to see Nestea getting eliminated from GSL again. Right now. By marine/SCV allin.)
Byun > Terminator (Byun is top5 terran in the world. He doesnt belong to Code A at all.)
Seed > Center (How I felt sorry for Dream? Yeah, I feel just about as sorry for Center.)
Shine > jangbi (I will root for JangBi so fucking much!! I feel Shine should be able to pull it out though. TSL Zerg is is not a good draw for JangBi right now )
Squirtle > Miya (Miya is just bad, end of story.)
mini < YongHwa (Yonghwa in Code A. yay!)
Flash > Brave (Flash. God. Ultimate Weapon...)
Baby > Brain (Baby didn't impress too much in Code S, but he was very good in MvP. I didn't see Brain play yet (isn't he formerly Tiger?))
MMA < Byul (When in doubt, Z>T.)
Trap < asd (both shouldnt be able to get into Code S anyway. So I guess it doesn't matter too much.)
JangBi forever <3 || Classic! herO! Rain! Zest! | Rogue! Hydra! Solar! | Fantasy! Cure! Reality! Sorry! Journey!

All the people who want NesTea to lose to cheese, need to go slap themselves. NesTea went to the depths of hell to pull out his teammates YongHwa and LosirA.
