Tough Life in third grade of middle school: Forced Shutdown + Unable to attend the press conference for GSL Finals
Life was taking part in the finals of the online Korean qualifiers for the Iron Squid 2 tournament, where he lost 1-4 to Brown.
The problem occurred in the second set. At that time, he was just going about playing, when Life received a reminder regarding a forced shutdown. It was then that he remembered, and mentioned in the chat "Oh yea, I am supposed to be forced shutdown." After that, he just grabbed all his army and forced an all-in on his opponent, which ended up failing.
Even though Life eventually lost to Brown, it doesn't affect his qualification.
There were more than 10000 foreign viewers watching via TwitchTV, and people were expressing their concerns regarding the actions of Life, and were quite shocked when they knew about the law in Korea which forces youths to go offline after a certain time.
Life is only 15 this year, and he's still a 3rd-grader in middle school. This Korean law which forces youths to go offline applies to youths below the age of 16, and they are not allowed to play online from 12am to 6am.
What gives Life even more of a headache is that he is still a student having his compulsory education in middle school and is unable to miss lessons. As a result, he will be unable to attend the GSL finals media day held on the morning of the 17th, even though this is a standard for every season of GSL.
Startale's coach has this to say. "Because of the law for the compulsory shutdown, the tournament had to be played earlier, and to have enough attendance at school, Life is unable to attend the media day in the morning. As a student in middle school, Life faces a lot of restrictions. We can overlook the compulsory education, but now there's this law for the forced shutdown. This makes it really difficult for the player to play to the best of his ability, and I think it's quite a pity."
How the hell is this kid so good with these ridiculous kind of restrictions?
Also, what exactly is this forced shut down law, I'm not exactly familar with korean laws, but it sounds like if you're under 16 you can't be online between after a certain time?
I was freaking out for a sec, but yeah I saw the series vs Brown and he got screwed over pretty badly. How he manages to be so good with all these restrictions I have no idea.

You wanna know why?Because he's alpha and omega baby!...he's gonna tear MVP apart!

It's a 6h a day restriction... time that really could (should) be slept sleeping. I don't really see the big deal behind the forced shutdown. It is unfortunate for online tournament participation... having to attend school instead of SC2 related events is probably a bigger problem to his current training. (Not trying to take anything away from Life - I think it's remarkable that he's a GSL finalist while attending any level of school.)

Do people even follow this lockdown rule? If you're streaming to 1000+ viewers obviously you'd quit but what about when they don't stream?
This is pure assumption but from what i understand they use that social security number for anything. If this is also used for the internet it just pressing a button and suddenly all the SSN's that are registered on age below x get locked out.

Ohh yea I forgot about the SSN being req for registration thing. Rather scary if you think about it.

lol how is it ridiculous? He can't play from 0:00 - 6:00. thats 6 hours in the night. He still has 18 hours per day to practice. You think its not enough?
He can just sleep during that time instead of sleeping 3:00-10:00 or so.

Remember he has to spend hours in school everyday too.

It's ridiculous that one of the best zergs in the world is going to elementary school in the same time. That alone is ridiculous.
Haha, as many others I also thought he couldn't attend the actual finals, because of the sidebar text cutoff!
Regarding Life's skill, it should be noted that up till his games against MarineKing he had summer break and could focus 100%. I think it is too soon to see whether school affects his performance and overall I think the major factor of how impactful school is, is how much Startale players and coaches help him analyse holes in Mvp's play. Also zerg OP :-D.

I don't exactly have first hand experience of Korean schools but something like 7-8 hours of school with 1-2 hours of traveling there doesn't sound unimaginable.
Then couple hours of doing other stuff like eating and maybe ideally sleeping for more than 6 hours and there's not that much time left.
I don't think the 0.00 - 6.00 alone should hurt anyone really.

Yea its not that the person who is considered the best BW player ever did the same...

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but i remember when i was playing Aion beta (a korean social security card was needed to create an account), people said the game just shutdown by itself if your account was linked to a card whose owner was a teen under 16 yo. It's just a forced shutdown, you can't do shit about it.

Flash... Who also played his fingers till they bled. I never refuted someone who is young could be great, Flash was best becasue he practiced more than anyone else but a kid who gets a bit of practice in before he's kicked off being one of the better players? -.- Skilled.

Do we really know about life's training regimen? Perhaps he trains a lot besides all these obligations / complications.

Do you live next to Life then or something since you know how much he practices? You are making assumption after assumption about stuff you don't know about it.

Flash won an OSL under similar conditions. Do you think he never slept or something?
This resembles a law in Germany, where "kids" under 16 are not allowed to "work" after 10PM. This caused some funny problems for a football team, that couldn't use their 15 year old prospect for the really important games, as those were played at night. xD
Although it is a pity for Life, as a general rule this is more helpful to the general populace than harmful to the one in a million pro gamer, for whom this is a real handicap to his job.
wow Life so good! And yes, many ( if not all ) of the game online in South Korea limit younger ppl playing time. it will be forced to close the game at midnight till early morning.
That's kind of incredible and sad at the same time...imagine how good this guy would be if he could actually devote his life to this game instead of having school to deal with.
These restrictions are only vefore your 16th right? Still quite impressive that he manages to get so far while attending school. Also, please don't scare me with the title ): Life cannot attend final...
Also impressive people start the bw vs sc2 here. I thought people were quite past that, especially in random threads.

he has school + has to study too?.. middle school kids gotta focus on high school entrance exams. Its very critical moment..

Hmm, considering that school life previous to college was a glorious time when I could do whatever and still got the best possible grades(which is probably the case for a good portion of TL), I don't think it means much, at all. Dealing with constant pain hindering your training on the other hand...
Lol, here in Germany, he'd get free from schoolup to 1 week, no problem at all. And 2 or 3 weeks is not that special either. A friend of mine was invited to a marriage in Spain. He was released from school for a week. Another friend of mine is a tennis semi pro, and he was allowed to visit a tourney in britain and came back 2 weeks later.
Couple of weeks ago, I was playing in a PC Bang when a Korean voice started talking something in my headset. My friend told me it was a warning for kids under 16 to leave.
Quite a pity for ST_Life... hopefully he can overcome this potential training hinderance.

I think it's a good law... The culture is different in Korea. Gaming and Internet in Korea is crazy addicting and what not (for the lack of better wording).
Don't forget that kids need sleep to grow and stay smart in school. You can't play SC2 forever. You're "done" when you're like 30 at the latest imo. Or when the game is dead or esports is dead.

its still a massive 8~ hour per day time sink on weekdays to attend classes (mandatory)
