Hey Everyone!
I thought I would take some time for us all to reflect on what we've sacrificed/invested to help grow this amazing world! Each and everyone of us takes time out of our day to support our favorite players, casters, and organizations to ultimately bring recognition and growth to the competitive gaming community. How many countless sleeps, relationships lost, and monies spent have you accrued over time!?
I, myself, have given up over 8 months of my life growing a community on twitch, thousands of dollars flying to different events like MLG Columbus and IPL4 in Vegas (all from Canada :D) and even changed careers to give me more time to do the thing I love most...Grow eSports!
If I could take it back for a second, would I?
Nope.

Iv no money, and I'm not gonna sacrifice people like family friends or my fiance though one should hardly expect a person to do that lol. So yea sleep is all iv got to sacrifice though if I had the money a TL hoodie would look real nice lol

This is how I see it. It's not a sacrifice but an investment rather. I've dedicated time and what little money i had spare to the cause.
Well worth it.

I actually think that's a good way of looking at it...Invest, not Sacrificed...I want to change the title, You so nerd baller <3
I've supported several teams giving them money since i got plenty of it! and watched streams etc!
The only thing i can think i have invested into Starcraft/eSports is money for the MLG Arenas and some gear. Was always a introvert so i still spend little time with friends and i dont sleep much. :D
eSports is perfect for me because of all of that, the only thing i would considered sacrificed is practice time on my cello >.< Damn zergs are always streaming...
Lots of money for gear/sponsor stuff, a lot of times where I had to get up at 7 for school and stayed up till 4+ a.m. to watch some american tournament. Lots of free time to play esports games or watch/support leagues/content.
Oh and a minivacation with my family to make it to dreamhack summer.
No regrets though, esports is awesome :D Also sacrificed is the wrong word here, more like erm I don't know put into or something.
How much did the game cost, can't remember.Sometimes have to stay up when favorite player is playing. Not much ;/ Is time spend on awesome forum a sacrifice ?
Someone needs to post the "STARCRAFT - What have you given up for it"-picture, cant find it :/
If I could go back I would change it to Invested =D It's a much better word. But it's always amazing to see how people help grow this, from all of you watching streams, going to events, buying merchandise... I hope you all know that every little thing you do for eSports is a huge help while trying to grow this community. I can't wait to see how eSports will look in 5 years. I pray for the best and I want to be a part of that.

My sanity. Coordinating for CSL was brutal.

Sleep, Bandwidth, Study and lots and lots of time.

Failing exams for IPL( or MLG, dont really remember )

Quite a bit of money, and of course a lot of free time. Other then that, nothing much.
I spent money on GOMtv and MLG since 2011, spent time to watch stephano's stream (fking late). less sleep, less study, less work out. I think I need to change now.
does anyone feel a bit guilty sometimes?

I was in an old back-alley speakeasy somewhere in east Harlem with Naniwa and Thorzain. It fun at first, but three hours and 2 bottles of cheap scotch later, we got to gambling - Indian Poker. Long story short, Naniwa raised the stakes, putting up his right index finger into the pot. Thorzain, full of his usual confidence and bottom shelf liquor, accepted. I think we all know how this story ends. Naniwa insists on his prize and Thorzain refuses. But when Naniwa wants blood, Naniwa gets blood. Fearing Thorzains inevitable loss in the TSL finals the next day, that is, with a missing finger, I offered my own in his place. Naniwa accepted, and eagerly chopped it off with his favorite boot knife.
So a finger... I sacrificed a finger so Thorzain could win TSL 3. What have you done for Esports lately?
+ Show Spoiler +Seriously though, this is going to be a terrible thread full of humble brags and people complaining about lost sleep.

Sleep, time and hopefully the new TL hoodie won't be sold out straight away so I can get one too! :D

Gear, premium streams... And alot of time making esports for active :D I'm very happy about the sacrifices i have made so far though.
I feel like we should definitely reflect on what we have contributed to the sc2 community, but also put into perspective how much we really have sacrificed. I know most people know about addictions, whether it be drug, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, etc. In the end, one really needs to ask them self, is SC2 becoming an addiction for me? Does the end justify the means? I realize this website is full of passionate fans who all want esports to grow (and I completely respect that) , but in the end, we only have one life and if you are not happy with SC2 and you think the sacrifices you have made do not justify the means, then you really do need to reassess your life style. So please, be passionate and proud of the sacrifices you have made, but also keep an open mind to whether or not SC2 has had a negative impact on your life. Like everything else in life, SC2 is best in moderation.
Not as much as perhaps I should have. I've been involved in the edges of esports for the last 16 years but never dived head in and committed because I never felt it made sense as a career.
But you don't get deeply involved for sensible reasons, you do it because you are passionate about it and try and maybe luck out and come out the end well, and if you don't you have no regrets.
Maybe soon ...

Sleep, a little bit of money and a biology exam.
Time. All of it. To watch an entire mlg stream has to be around 30 hours in 3 days.
Nowhere near what I sacrificed for wow or diablo2, in comparison: loads of money(wow sub), and most importantly, personal physical and mental health. I could say I even gained something from esports on the other hand, like better english knowledge, korean alphabet and patience.

Uh, I bought about 3500 kroner's worth of keyboards over the years, which would be 580~ dollars. And a little less than that on mice. I'm assuming time and money invested into hamster-related affairs are not counted in this case.
I have t shirts from every major team. Gave 50 bucks to liquid rising. I also gave a few hundred bucks to some vile gaming tournaments when I was a moderator on their website
I got myself XAI and SX from steelseries. Wouldn't really call it a sacrafice =) Probably getting carpal tunnel but whatever, we're all just gonna die anyway ^^
I sacrifice a goat or a chicken once a month. Once I almost sacrificed my firstborn son but God of E-Sports told me he was just trolling.
I would have to say sleep mostly. Free time to do other things? Money i suppose since I did buy a EG team jersey. Money spent on MLG season HD passes(which was worth it, but god I am burnt out on SC 2 watching soo i need a break lol) But I enjoyed it all.
Sanity. Some of the stuff i have seen in the forums are pretty demoralizing. Also study time but i have never been good at that.
Nothing. Why would I sacrifice something for entertainement ? But I don't feel as invested or interrested in ESPORT as a lot here. I find it pretty cool but I don't really care.
I sacrificed reapers, bunkers, thors, stim, BF hellions, ghosts twice, barracks, mules, steppes of war, deadspace, any room to build, TLO, the early game, and my ability to gl hf. I plan on sacrificing ravens, marines , nukes, antiga shipyard, and any other T favored maps in the near future.
When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.

Sleep and grades. I'm disappointed about my college admissions, but that's okay. I gave up gaming but I still visit TL. Haven't quite gotten rid of my addiction. This game really brings out the worst in me. Profanities, foul behavior. Ugh.

I bought the game, spent countless hours wasting away in front of streams of players and tournaments, bought a couple t-shirts, and paid for a ticket to the most recent MLG Anaheim.

Not a damn thing I intend to keep it that way.
Well if you don't count sleep ofc and the money for my trips to Dreamhack, but that's mostly for the LAN party fun, Starcraft tournies are a nice bonus.

Sacrifice? Nothing. Invested? A few weekends for MLG Providence, NESC2Leage finals, and countless dollars on various tickets to watch online, and donated some money. Other than that, not really much. I'd like to think I've saved money since I've spent minimal money on other games

I sacrificed, my hacking skills for SC2. I prefer to play that learn about hacking I love this game ...
Besides the time I have spent in anything in relation with e-sports, PC gear and buying games, I have spent 40€ to get into Hall 23 in Hannover on the CeBiT, just to see Grubby and Apollo talking about the last game which just ended. 20 minuts talking with TT1, DIMAGA, TaKe and many more and also seeing IdrA ragequitting.
But after thsoe 20 minuts I had to go back to school since I was on a schoold trip.

Some small things : I leave the stream up to give that little extra for whatever player(s) im watching. i honestly dont know if it has any effect but i do it anyway. I don't know if buying gear from steelseries/razer etc counts but I did buy the Benq 60hz monitor that startale had some hand in (Benq RL2450HT, although not only cos of startale but why not) and along with a steelseries keyboard / mouse / headset. I dont know if it helps e-sports though It definetly helped me! hihi oh and I also follow a bunch of streams to give them extra features on twitch.

A lot of money and time! I graduated with a degree in Molecular Biology, went to the first MLG event that had SC2 on it (Raleigh 2010) and competed. It was my first real LAN event for anything and I absolutely loved it and had to get involved. Been working as an admin ever since, and every day I'm trying to get more and more involved. Would love to make a career out of competitive gaming. Unfortunately it means living off a pretty small budget and taking a lot of jobs I wouldn't have considered given my degree (working at a car wash for example) so I can afford to take the time off to travel to MLGs but hopefully it'll all be worth it in the end. And if it never works out then hey, I'll take out some loans and go get my Masters.

A lot of time, grades, money, and more time. Well worth it, though. I feel like I could leave my current life behind and just live an eSports-centered life.

Bought to throw more money to it once R1CH posts up these new TL hoodies.

Way too much time. Money for gaming gear. I like everything i got in return from sc2. But i do think about replacing sc2 hobby with something much more helthier and less brain hurting. I like to watch it but somehow after all the games i watched i feel little oversaturated, games aren't that exciting... at least for me.

My contributions:
- Hundreds upon hundreds of dollars poured into SC2 organizations (GSL yearly tickets start to get up there in price
);
- money dumped into sponsorship gear (namely Razer and Steelseries)
- I've begun contributing to Liquipedia;
- made some maps and shared them (one of which is getting featured in the July map pool of the recently announced Mapper's Monthly, woot!);
- host and help run a small Canadian-centric SC2 community called The Canadian Dominion;
- help run and manage small tournaments for said community
Worth every second spent, too. :D

Let's be honest here... Most people don't spend money to go to events to grow eSports, most people do it because it entertains them and they find joy in watching or playing games... I doubt that anyone on here can say they sacrificed everything in their lives just to help eSports grow, without getting anything back in return.
for eSports? bandwidth I guess? better question imo is starcraft because that for me at least is a whole different story.

My high school GPA tanked from 3.8/3.9 to 3.5 in the last two years because of eSports. Skipping homework and studying to play SC2. Now it is very unlikely I will be going to a high level university out of my state or getting good scholarships that allow me to afford the out of state school I want. I went from noob bronze to high diamond/masters although recently I haven't played much. I want to keep playing but I need to wait for a new comp because mine is old and simply can't run the game well.

how is buying products and paying for flights to events "giving things up?" its no different than taking a vacation. I disagree buying a product JUST because a esport company is sponsored, I bought my steel series keyboard because I needed a new keyboard and I like what they produce. The fact that they help other companies and things I love is a bonus, but companies shouldn't get sales if their products are shit just because they're helping grow the scene. I don't think i've sacrificed anything for esports because there is less I'd rather do than have a weekend hanging with my girl and watching mlg.

nothing. I work 40 hours a week, I go to school full time studying pre-med with a 4.0 GPA at Harvard, I go to the gym 3 hours (I max at 350 pounds and have a 5 minute mile run) a day, I have a girlfriend that I have been dating for 2 years so far, and I am still a top 8 master terran on the eu and na ladder and top 32 master on korean ladder using a Micro$oft Intellimouse and a shitty Dell keyboard and I get only 30 FPS because my PC blows plus I lag a lot on KR ladder. I watch gsl live everytime it is on as well as every single tournament. I watch any terran stream of a good player. I still get sufficient 8 hours of sleep.

Time.
Which is the most important thing, amongst traveling to many local LANs and a couple MLG"s. I've also spent many many hours bringing the Arizona SC2 scene together, as well as coaching.

Well, I'm not going to watch something I don't like. I like SC2 so I watch it. |
i have lost free time. now i always have stuff to do
since the title was " what have you sacrificed for esports"
and not "what have you sacrificed for starcraft"
im gonna say, parts of my school ( leaving me without a job or any career now when i really need it)
and instead ive got 7 years of 89% gaming in competitions and the last percent is work during these 7 years,
and i havnt got a single buck from it nor any attention, so id say most of my life is *****. to any young gamer watching this, when your parents say " dont play PC after 10 and go to school" , do listen ;P
i sacrificed my innocence
lotta time and 60 for game, near 200 for gaming gear, balls for talking with chicks about starcraft

I watch gsl live everytime it is on as well as every single tournament. I watch any terran stream of a good player. I still get sufficient 8 hours of sleep. Oh no, please, do continue with your amazing and believable life story.
FOR ESPORTSSSSS

I personally don't care for the growth of esports. I just think starcraft 2 is an amazing game that deserves all of the attention it garners. A lot of people here would be lying if they did not agree with my sentiment.
I have sacrificed my time to read this thread. FOR ESPORTS!
Oh and I watched NASL with adblock off.

"sacrifice" seems to be the an interesting word here. It sounds more noble than asking, "What have you neglected/ruined/altered/compromised for ESPORTS!"
In high school, the BW days, I basically wasted much of my time on the computer on said game, letting my grades tailspin, my outdoor adventures become a distant memory, and severely crippled my social life. I played toooo much.
If the question has to do with the "growth of ESPORTS," i.e. the growth of profits for all the lovely sponsors of the billions of SC2 tournaments: probably nothing.

i could have been the U.S. President.

I don't understand why so many people made stupid life choices for eSports.....
I mean, I'm in college and I work a full time job, and still have time for eSports....hell I have time to go to every major North American LAN.
It's not really the time I feel is "sacrificed" because it's what I love and enjoy doing. The real sacrifice, at least on my end, is all the damn travel expenses T_T

sleep, money, dignity

I skipped my senior prom to go to a tournament...
oh wait that was a fighting game tournament (Final Round back in '05) It's still an e-SPORT though! >.<
One of the best days of my life.

Huh your relationship with ur brother? What happened?

I've only sacrificed sleep.
Sleep lots and lots of precious sleep lol and some money but mostly sleep.
sleep, a bit of money, some time that could have been spent doing something more productive.
but i don't see it as a sacrifice really, mostly just paying for what i want.
time n stuff and heartache
My grades, my health, my money, my future wellbeing. Oh well, esports FTW
Grades, sleep, and some cash. A big sacrifice for a college student!
Some sleep, some time, and a bit of money. Kept them grades up though

Apart from time and money for GSL/ESL: When they start selling merch from all the korean teams, I will be a poor, poor man

Echoing this, my 8.95 is gone and I can't help but look back.
But it's in the past, I can only now look forward to a life without my 8.95.

Soooooooo much time. So so much time. Plus a couple hundred dollars. Feelsgoodman.jpg
Sleep, money, grades, my cat, bandwidth, massive amounts of time in general -> repeat
Sacrificed my sleep and time. I think that's it.
$70 for TL hoodie, few hundred dollars on g9x, mechanical keyboard and mousepad.
it's worth it... it helped me get over my ex who cheated on me (happened before i picked up playing)
I really don't think 'sacrifice' is a good word for it, but I've spent a lot of time watching. I don't consider my mechanical keyboard to be an eSports thing, because I use my keyboard for all my homework and programming, and thus I see the $100 investment well worth it.
Haha, lots of things!
I'd say the most measurable sacrifice would have to be my right pinkie finger.
time...but it is worth it
sacrificed other games, starcraft is ma life now. Although miss being better than all my friends at all games
A couple thousand bucks, time, a girlfriend and maybe a year less of general practice in favour of an earlier medical specialty. But it's been so worth it and so rewarding... The sacrifices done are nothing when compared to all what you gain. Friendship, good times, you learn a TON of shit, and have some fun times. eSports!
I find this funny. I've probably sacrificed a little bit of sleep, about 500 dollars for a new computer, and that's it. I'm a sophomore in High school taking 3 AP's and having all A's and still play a lot of sc2 enough to get to near grandmasters. It's all about time management and making the right decisions at the right time. Don't let your grades slip, relationships be ruined, or be jobless for eSports. Most of us will not really have a future as a pro gamer, so stop being lazy and put effort into other things and then sc2 can come later. Trust me, you will feel far more better and be far more successful in life.
left my job and worked full time for esport in diffrent teams ^^ About to start my own professional team :')
Probably money and time, but all of it was well worth it . E-Sports is going to be the next big thing I know it :D.
My job, shit ton of money.
That is all.
my nerve system and a shitload of time
I'm amazed how many responses we got. It's great to see how many people love this industry as much as me Thank you everyone for your continued support to grow eSports! :D
Spent time checking out the free MLG streams back in the day. I basically just watch the zerg streamers now.
I wouldn't say it was sacrificed time, because I'd be spending it doing some other mindless thing.
Me and all my friends bailed early from the clubs well around midnight for dreamhack So social life + Time
Nothing? I've never paid a thing to watch MLG, NASL, GSL or anything like that, nor have I gone to any events or bought any merchandise (unless you want to count buying a steelseries keyboard when my old, ~17 year old one died). And I guess time, but I would've just spent that on something else that was just as unproductive.
Every ounce of productivity that I had before sc2 came out :D
I've bought some team merchandise, gear, donated to streams and charity events, etc etc
All was worth it
Some money. All of my time, and then some, for 9 years.
Social Life, any hope of a relationship and I dont see my friends too too much
Well I got interested in Korea through ESPORTS and ended up coming here, but I don't consider that giving up anything because Korea is awesome.
I guess I've spent the money for MLG gold and my GSL passes, but I'd call that money well spent.
The only thing I can really think of is that I spent way too many mornings of my study leave, when I was doing my exams a year ago, watching the GSL instead of revising. And maybe if I hadn't I would have got into my first choice university. But if I'd got the grades for that I wouldn't have had an amazing year off.
sleep, bandwith, money, study, family, friends, health, sufficent natural production of vitamin d
Way too many late nights and lack if actually playing the game lol.
Grades. Fuck school, I know every top sc2 player and his personal style.
Ive skipped way too many morning lessons just to see favorite players play in GSL T.T
Updated the scores for the TSL Qualifiers instead of studying
Everything and i'm grasping the bottom to find something else to sacrifice.
Everything and if i could go back in time i would do it again
Nuttin. It's just a stupid hobby-thing that I watch instead of TV.
