07:06 KST - method linked here has been disproved here

10:54 KST - Find a full timeline of pro comments (including Spades) in the topic here.

08:47 KST - Summary:
Accusations of maphacking have the potential to destroy a player's career if left unaddressed. Because of the potential consequences, we should be careful about accepting unproven accusations. The principle of 'innocent until proven guilty' should be applied here. That does not mean that there has been a conclusion about this case, however, which is why this thread remains tentatively open.

Please discuss with caution and use evidence to back up your claims.

Spades -- why don't you just go and grab your last ~60+ games from your NA ladder account? Don't cherrypick replays, just grab a bunch of them, upload them and let people go through them. If you're not hacking, this will basically completely exonerate you -- there will definately be comparisons to your match history to ensure you aren't excluding replays, and it's a sufficient enough sample size to remove the random "luck" movements.

Is there a reason why you haven't done this yet?

Even if there is evidence of him hacking there's no way he would lose the showmatch and he clicks a ton on the minimap so camera pauses don't shock me.Not absolutely sure he isn't ,but why make threads and ruin his career on a crazy speculation.

-You can also lock onto another player camera mouvement like you do in a replay, but ingame if anyone is interested.

-Production Tab

-Forcefield duration bar (lol ? )

This thing is by far the best shit I could find out there. I do not believe there is some "automatic" camera lock like the OP claims. Better, I can almost certainly claim there is no such thing. This combined with the fact that the replays, even if a bit suspicious, aren't even close to being conclusive. How many successful drop did Luci sneak in ? Nah I don't believe Spades to be a maphacker. If you want to expose someone, at least do it with your main account.

Peace.

Blizzard needs a solution to this nonsense, because as it stands offline tournaments can often times be won by someone using a maphack.

When there is money to be made by cheating then people will always do it. I dont believe that people will do it while streaming though... thats pretty stupid. Granted Spades has been caught cheating before but in my opinion, thats all the more reason that he wouldnt do it again while streaming in SC2. Hard to tell but my gut instinct tells me that he is a hack.

I would like to comment on this topic.

I have slightly suspected Spades of hacking since early March or so. I was contacted to organize a thread for a showmatch between Spades and lastshadow and I believe it was lastshadow who mentioned to me that Spades possibly had a suspiciously good ladder record relative to what he had in the past, and what his tournament results would indicate. At the time I believe Spades was top 16 NA Grandmasters with over 60% winrate. which was definitely a better record than he ever really had in the past from his pre korea days or even late 2011. After this conversation (if spades actually does hack now, ls is pretty genius lol) I remember that being the first seed of suspicion being planted for me. I started looking into a few replays I could find but didn't note anything really interesting or definitive and I hadn't run into him on ladder in quite a while so I didn't really have any personal material to go off of. I ended up never really taking that much time or found anything definitive I could go public with or anything. I really honestly believed Spades didn't hack. He has been going to tons of live events posting modest results, nothing really amazing but to post amazing results at any major lan event is a pretty ridiculous accomplishment. Plus Spades had already been caught hacking in broodwar and seemed to be taking sc2 pretty seriously as far as career endeavors go so I really believed he wouldn't dare risk hacking again.

After that I pretty much didn't try to research anything further but I did start to note Spades results in tournaments and on streams or lan events where he couldn't hack or would be caught. His results were nothing that special but like I said posting great results at big events is super hard so it didn't really add much suspicion. I did note a slight discrepancy with having such a solid ladder record vs who he was losing to at events though. I don't have all his results handy but I know at least he was at MLG Columbus and IPL4 (two tournaments during the times of suspicion for me). Typically players with really solid ladder records do decently in open bracket play against unknown or lesser known opponents. but may struggle against the very top players in bo3/bo5. This is just a general trend I notice when it's mid tier pro vs mid tier pro in open bracket play. A more well rounded ladder player will be better off in that sort of setting than a player who is better with time to prepare for a match.

anyway I'm sort of rambling now and while I haven't had a chance to watch the replays so I can't personally accuse or anything I just wanted to share some of my thoughts to hopefully help bring some clarity to the situation.

The Starcraft community has been burned in the past by hackers who have claimed to change their ways and go legit, only to fall back on hacking. Just look at Testie and TreK. Both players for YEARS had people backing their side of the story. "This game was just luck", "that game was random chance", "this game wasn't conclusive enough". When they were caught hacking later, only with conclusive proof, they were almost universally shunned. Those two examples are why I would say the community has today adopted a "once a hacker, always a hacker" stance. There are some players like TT1 who haven't had accusations brought against them since their hacking incident, but a lot of people in the community don't want to take that chance.

Yes, this very much. It wasn't just the fact that Spades hacked, but he hacked in Yankee League, which was pretty big at the time. Not only did he make himself look bad, but he made his team and friends that defended him look bad. The lack of a public apology after all of this doesn't help his case.

Not trying to live in the past and I honestly don't know if he hacked in these replays or not, but for the newer posters wondering why the older posters are suspicious, there were quite a bit of big hacking incidents throughout Brood War and we would definitely love to avoid those.

Question to all you who have seen the replays.

Is it true that he at no occasion during these 7 games holds his camera over a fog of war area? And that his camera at several times locks up at the edge of where the fog of war starts on the screen (in addition to all the other lock ups)?

Since the hack apparantly results in just this, this would be the one main thing thats fishy to me. But then again, a player could obviously play many games in a row without ever looking at a fog of war area despite how crazy that seems to me. But i guess certain players can have certain weird playstyles.

Like someone earlier suggested in the thread i think a wise thing for Spades to do would be to just select as many of his recent replays as possible and rar them and put it out there. If there is no consistant suspicious play showing up in these replays that is absolutely something that would be in his favour. But then obviously he would need to show (and proove) that these werent sharrypicked replays and that it indeed is a complete list of all his recent games during the last month or so.

It is not true that he at no occasion during these 7 games holds his camera over a fog of war area.

It must be said as well that he wouldn't be so fucking dumb to keep this hack always on.
The deal with the hellions on TDA made me wonder. I hope a pro player on itg or sotg dares to watch these replays and give his opinion. Avilo made a good post though. That shit was strange.

Well that is a good point. A "smart" hacker (even though there obviously is no such thing as a smart hacker) would have a routine of a simple click to deactivate and activate the hack during the game just to confuse anyone trying to analyse it.

A hacker getting away with it would most likely create replays that on its own cannot be used as clear evidence in any way. Im just talking in general now though and im not implying anything, like others pointed out; innocent until proven guilty.

Shouldn't you be able to use SC2Gears mouse print recorder togheter with the replay to see if the what Spades is doing with his mouse during the lockdowns? If he does something that would mean that the camera would move, except for the lock on the replay, then we got him, if he doesn't, it shouldn't be hacking?

Game 4: Meta
I'm more than willing to defend his scouting scv not having to have to look at it to turn it around and send it back to base. Sometimes I just want to know the position of the enemy, and he sees that it is blocked off on the minimap and sends it back.

However, to this point:

Game 4: Meta

Everything true, really suspicous at 7:30 where he moves his army towards the hellions without seeing, despite the fact he was moving back and forth in same place 10 seconds ago.
random chance

7:30 is all I needed to see. I watched it multiple times and there's no doubt in my mind that he sees the medivac dropping units and he's waiting for them to unload and start moving away from the cliff before he engages. No. I encourage you to watch this one and look at his clicks. He knows they are headed to the top right and takes the angle necessary to cut them off, despite not technically being able to see it. I was okay with the other stuff in the other games, timing related things he could have been familiar with by watching previous replays of this player etc, but this one play at 7:30 on game 4 Meta was just too much. Sorry sir, I have to agree with the OP.

Yes, 7:30 on metal stands out noticeably.

Yeah it's one of the many I found, didn't thought it was necessary to in the gigantic feature list. It still doesn't have the magic thing OP describes.
I also agree its ridiculous, there is so many thing that directly infer with game files, I can't believe it's not detectable.

This is EXACTLY what needs to happen. It's not like this is a situation only seen in eSports. In conventional sports players are often accused of using steroids, and when they refuse to take a drug test suddenly there is even greater suspicion without the hard evidence. If Spades won't come out and do that, he's as good as guilty in my book. It's an obnoxious thing to have to do to clear your name, but if there is any suspicion that you are hacking and you know that you are innocent, you should be willing to go to make things right.

I don't have a personal contact with him for various reasons, but I'd rather stay impartial in this thread as an accusation like this -- even if it's wrong, has very detrimental effects that no-ones deserves. If anyone is able to contact him for this, it'd be a good idea..

This is hard to say. I feel sorry for Spades regardless as this is his passion and his chosen career path. However, if he is actually cheating, he knows the consequences of his actions more than anyone, and probably deserves being permabanned. In my opinion currently, the OP author was too hasty. I hope there is follow up from this, like Spades releasing a replay pack soon.

Like really, it can't be to keep your builds 'secret' He's mid level, there's not much he can have that is super exciting or unseen. Just seems like denial, and defensiveness to avoid the topic.

Can't you see that happening though? People are already confident making tons of silly claims ("losing to hide the hacking" etc)
To begin with, we're talking about a showmatch where he lost..
