I am not sure if I would be warned for this but when I read the title I couldn't keep myself from saying "Is this really about Starcraft?"
I think it is ok to bring some stuff barely related with SC2 and always happening. But when I click Starcraft 2 - General tab, I expect something related with SC2. I don't know...

I don't understand all the constant hate on Jessica.

Because she proves time and time again that she can not handle things in a mature fashion. Trolls do not deserve to be sued, if we are going to act under this guise of anonymity then it must apply to everyone regardless of what they say (For the most part, if someone threatens to kill people then thats different) either everyone should get anonymity (Because thats essentially what the internet bases itself on) or everyone should be forced to register for things with their real life names and every person have their own online profile which takes away the anonymity.

yes, you have every right to tell a grown, married, and succesfull woman what maturity is. you go girl!

on a side note, i never knew how awesome Korean culture is. hard work, responsibility, respect for the elders, sense of community/team over individuals...... concepts that so many of kids on TL don't seem to understand, let alone appreciate.

There is no reason to take a stand. None. Not a single reason. What happened to "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?" It is absolutely nonsensical to claim that trolls must inevitably be "purged from existence." If it bothers you, just don't listen to them. Be the bigger man and forget about it.

You're fine to keep that stand and you, me, and the majority on the internet are already fine with it, but rational human beings are going to continue looking for ways of stopping each other from being unnecessarily cruel because it's no different from spitting in anyone's face or any form of inciting aggression.

It's a useless plague defended primarily because just like the common cold, it's hard to stop and it doesn't kill people outright.

Or well, suicide, like someone else said. It's disgusting behavior that will be dealt with someday, that's just a fact.

What happened? People realized that that saying is absolute bullshit. Words and verbal harassment can be just as hurtful as physical abuse, and there are a plethora of suicide cases to back that up.

inb4 someone claims that i'm arguing jessica is going to kill herself

That saying is not bullshit at all. Words can only hurt you if you let them. Suicide cases do not prove that the "sticks and stones" saying is bullshit. It just proves that those people let words hurt them. Nothing else.

Oh get off your high horse. The fact of the matter is that people are hurt by these things, and that's all that's necessary to win a lawsuit or have someone issued a restraining order. Just because you don't think they have a good reason to be hurting isn't sufficient because lawsuits are based on damages.

I'd also be willing to bet that if you were locked up in prison for a year and constantly berated, it'd "get" to you after awhile. Shit's all relative mate.

So because it is a fact that people allow words to drive them to suicide, laws should be made to stop people from saying words? What exactly are you advocating? A restraining order, I could see. Absolutely. In the case of harassment, yes I think a restraining order is fine. However, suing for anything other than a restraining order is nonsense. I am offended by your words, thus you must pay me 500 dollars. Garbage argument.

Personally, I do not believe that the rest of us should suffer restrictions on what we can and cannot say just because some people can't handle words. That's nonsense. I will note that this is an American prospective on free speech. This influences my opinions greatly.

A lot of people are missing the point that they tried for a long time to ban and keep the person away however they kept coming back, therefore I agree with Jessica suing.

Slayers were having a public tourny/practice compare that to a football/basketball team having a public event and you have some guy there swearing and using vulgar language? you bet he can be fined up to $238.00 per offence you get a bad mood police officer and you said 5 offending words... sad times for you.

Not sure why people think no laws exist to stop offensive language, Australia in 2009 and 2010 financial years,
793 people a were fined for indecent language in just one state and that is just the number of people that were found guilty not a single one of them got off the proverbial hook.

America's numbers are far higher as well at least offensive language is a good law to in-force America has some other laws that are a bit... different?
ARIZONA
It is illegal to let a Donkey sleep in a bathtub.
You may not have more than two dildos in a house.

ARKANSAS
It is legal for a husband to beat his wife, but not more than once a month.
It is illegal to mispronounce the name of the state of Arkansas.

CALIFORNIA
In Los Angeles, customers in meat markets are prohibited
from poking a turkey to see how tender it is.

It is a misdemeanor to shoot at any kind of game from a moving vehicle,
unless the target is a whale

No vehicle without a driver may exceed 60 miles per hour.

DELAWARE
It is illegal to fly over any body of water, unless one is carrying sufficient supplies of food
and drink
No person shall pretend to sleep on a bench on the board-walk

And some people think that there are no offensive language laws? really?
One who understands much displays a greater simplicity of character than one who understands little

I'd be a bloody billionaire.

Once again, harassment is not the same as one-off, lackadaisical trolling.

I don't see any harassment here. I see some dumb kid saying dumb things on the internet. There is no magic leap from trolling to harassment just because it continues on for a period of time. It's either acceptable or it isn't.

There's a difference between being rude once and repeatedly being rude. I'm not sure how you don't see that. The first is just rudeness, and the second crosses the line represents a consistent effort to bring someone down. I can call someone an asshole once and just be a jerk, but if I call them once a day and call them an asshole, or call them an asshole every time I see them, it's harassment.

From what I've heard, Korean internet rules are much different than my own. Although this seems totally out of whack in the United States, the fact that Korean 'netizens' post under their social-security-number-thing does seem to predicate that there will be much more accountability.

Can't really hate on her for doing this. He insulted her and she's taking action against it. Would this type of situation be handled differently in the United States? Without a doubt, but again this is in S.Korea so more power to you.

I would argue for the good of all humanity, he should be sentenced. Internet harassment can be pretty damaging. Yeah you can just say "grow a pair", but what if it was your kid, or wife, or sibling, or gf, or anyone that you cared about being harassed incessantly and viciously online. Would you tell your loved one to "grow a pair"?

Of course.

Let me know how that goes for you.

It's been going great thus far.

As the mentally healthy being I am, I don't let random people on the internet get to me.

seriously, how old are you??????

if somebody "harassed incessantly and viciously online" your sister or girlfriend, you would SERIOUSLY tell her to grow a pair, and in fact, "that's what you've been doing"

there's a huge difference between harassment and "random stuff from internet getting to me"

I'm almost 19 years old. Why would I care on behalf of my sister if someone on the internet, possibly thousands of miles away, who's probably 15 years old, is using vulgar language? You know what I'd do-- I'd tell me sister to block the silly bastard and tell her about life. I'd tell her not to pay attention and be a better person.

But you know what else? Even if I did have a sister, I know she'd be smarter than that. I know she'd not pay attention to silly stuff on the internet -- and you know why? Because it's silly.

good to know you're 19.

unfortunately it means you can vote <.<

Yeah, must be horrible knowing that people full of heart, common sense and human-awareness can vote.

When you are repeatedly making obscene sexual comments on the internet towards an individual, this isn't trolling anymore...it's called harassment. It is important to differentiate between the two. This was not someone just merely trolling, this was someone who was repeatedly harassing someone, and thinking that they could get away with it because of the anonymity of the internet.

Yep.

And just because it's commonplace on the internet to see insults, does not make them acceptable.

This isn't just some typical trolling. This is essentially cyberbullying. And to see all the posts saying "oh it's no big deal. just ignore it" is just sad.

yes of course. i would say "just ignore those dumb internet trolls. or troll them back if you like, they will think its cool and probably shut up. you have a ban button anyway.".

i even said something like this to a family member yesterday. she was a bit pissy about an irl person who she thought was cocky and annoying . i said "you just need to throw it back a bit. learn to banter. its no big deal"

or what should i do, freak the fuck out and have a breakdown, cradling my loved-one and cocking my rifle? its the INTERNET ffs. ban, squelch, block, dont read, scroll by, and god damn grow a pair and realise not everyone is thinking exactly the same way as you or your tiny specific and self-righteous culture

guy0 : lol at the trolls
guy1 : ignore the trolls
guy2 : ban the trolls, request invest./ip bans from admin
guy3 : censor swearing
guy4 : get offended like hell, break down, sue them

seriously?

It's not an American perspective; it's the perspective of an immature child who's never felt any true sense of loss or encountered authentic harassment or abuse.

Like it or not, Jessica has been under a microscope ever since she married Boxer, and even then, netizens were delving deep into her personal life (stuff that isn't any of their business) to explain why she wasn't fit for Boxer. She has every reason to be wary of people who repeatedly harass her.

Also, yeah, laws should be made to allow people who are being berated by other people for no good reason to pay damages if it can be demonstrated to a court of law that authentic mental and/or physical negative consequences have resulted. If your abnormal pestering of me directly causes me to undergo a nervous breakdown due to, say, stress, then I have every fucking right to sue you for screwing with my life. I'm gonna go out on a limb her and assume you've never taken even an elementary psych course, but I suggest you do so, lest you think that people simply choose to be anxious or offended by things. If that were the case, why in the holy mother of fuck would anyone choose to be in tears because of something? Why not choose to be joyous?
