I don't see any harassment here. I see some dumb kid saying dumb things on the internet. There is no magic leap from trolling to harassment just because it continues on for a period of time. It's either acceptable or it isn't.

you got it all wrong buddy. you were thaught that by being anonimous on the internet you can do that shit. you can't. people shouldn't be able to. this shit should happen in the west, maybe then internet would actually serve it's original purpose, and not be a retard magnet.

I would argue for the good of all humanity, he should be sentenced. Internet harassment can be pretty damaging. Yeah you can just say "grow a pair", but what if it was your kid, or wife, or sibling, or gf, or anyone that you cared about being harassed incessantly and viciously online. Would you tell your loved one to "grow a pair"?

Of course.

Let me know how that goes for you.

It's been going great thus far.

As the mentally healthy being I am, I don't let random people on the internet get to me.

seriously, how old are you??????

if somebody "harassed incessantly and viciously online" your sister or girlfriend, you would SERIOUSLY tell her to grow a pair, and in fact, "that's what you've been doing"

there's a huge difference between harassment and "random stuff from internet getting to me"

I'm almost 19 years old. Why would I care on behalf of my sister if someone on the internet, possibly thousands of miles away, who's probably 15 years old, is using vulgar language? You know what I'd do-- I'd tell me sister to block the silly bastard and tell her about life. I'd tell her not to pay attention and be a better person.

But you know what else? Even if I did have a sister, I know she'd be smarter than that. I know she'd not pay attention to silly stuff on the internet -- and you know why? Because it's silly.

well, 19 is way over enough to understand difference between harassment and "using vulgar language", right? you don't sue people for using vulgar language, not even in the states. but you do sue them for harassment, even in third world countries. so, please learn the difference...

She's not going to sue for harassment. It says she sues for "Cyber Defamation", which is a complete joke. Maybe Jessica just needs to sue him to pay for their team house, since it got expensive running it.

yes of course. i would say "just ignore those dumb internet trolls. or troll them back if you like, they will think its cool and probably shut up. you have a ban button anyway.".

i even said something like this to a family member yesterday. she was a bit pissy about an irl person who she thought was cocky and annoying . i said "you just need to throw it back a bit. learn to banter. its no big deal"

or what should i do, freak the fuck out and have a breakdown, cradling my loved-one and cocking my rifle? its the INTERNET ffs. ban, squelch, block, dont read, scroll by, and god damn grow a pair and realise not everyone is thinking exactly the same way as you or your tiny specific and self-righteous culture

Or abiding by the laws. When KR tracks IDs and allows backtracking, yes it is perfectly sensible to let the culprit suffer for his actions.

There's a difference between being rude once and repeatedly being rude. I'm not sure how you don't see that. The first is just rudeness, and the second crosses the line represents a consistent effort to bring someone down. I can call someone an asshole once and just be a jerk, but if I call them once a day and call them an asshole, or call them an asshole every time I see them, it's harassment.

No, there isn't. Also calling someone on the phone =/= using a publicly available chat room

If you go out of your way to come to a presentation I'm giving, even if it's open to the public, and berate me, and if you continue to do this time after time, it's harassment.

THINK for a second where Jessica is coming from. Her entire career hinges on how the public perceives her, shes both a celebrity and a major figure on a team that needs sponsors. She'd be stupid to NOT do everything in her power to fight defamation and libel on the only medium our whole community exists on. Not to mention this sets an example in the amateur stages of esports that we don't tolerate shitty stream monsters and everyone is accountable. It makes no sense for anyone to criticize her unless you're a troll yourself. Its disgusting how little support this thread has for Jessica and this is the reason esports will never make it mainstream. I suppose the one guy orb called a "nigger" in a game was overreacting as well right?.. And those statements to Jessica were made in front of thousands.

A simple ban would not work because the guy repeatedly came back.
Some fucking support for a good cause would be nice.

It's a joke, eh? Please, refer me to the relevant Korean legal documentation (which you are evidently well-versed in) that you have consulted to arrive at the opinion that this law is a joke.

Cyber defamation is a translation. You don't know what it's actually referring to in legalese. It's most likely an analogue of harassment or defamation.

Most people have the common sense to NOT CARE about internet haters and trolls, and even if you take offense from them (which is dumb) up to seven years in prison? How can anyone feel that random insults on the internet is reason enough to lock someone up for seven years?

She is, as she almost always does, overreacting.

You understand that she is not deciding the sentence, but courts do that based on the laws created by lawmakers. Complain about South Korea laws that have such high sentences for this.

Yes but she knows what might be in store for him and despite this she presses the issue instead of just telling herself "oh well haters gonna hate."

Someone has to a take a stand, it might as well be someone particular where it's taken very seriously.

There is no reason to take a stand. None. Not a single reason. What happened to "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me?" It is absolutely nonsensical to claim that trolls must inevitably be "purged from existence." If it bothers you, just don't listen to them. Be the bigger man and forget about it.

What happened? People realized that that saying is absolute bullshit. Words and verbal harassment can be just as hurtful as physical abuse, and there are a plethora of suicide cases to back that up.

inb4 someone claims that i'm arguing jessica is going to kill herself

That saying is not bullshit at all. Words can only hurt you if you let them. Suicide cases do not prove that the "sticks and stones" saying is bullshit. It just proves that those people let words hurt them. Nothing else.

Oh get off your high horse. The fact of the matter is that people are hurt by these things, and that's all that's necessary to win a lawsuit or have someone issued a restraining order. Just because you don't think they have a good reason to be hurting isn't sufficient because lawsuits are based on damages.

I'd also be willing to bet that if you were locked up in prison for a year and constantly berated, it'd "get" to you after awhile. Shit's all relative mate.

So because it is a fact that people allow words to drive them to suicide, laws should be made to stop people from saying words? What exactly are you advocating? A restraining order, I could see. Absolutely. In the case of harassment, yes I think a restraining order is fine. However, suing for anything other than a restraining order is nonsense. I am offended by your words, thus you must pay me 500 dollars. Garbage argument.

Personally, I do not believe that the rest of us should suffer restrictions on what we can and cannot say just because some people can't handle words. That's nonsense. I will note that this is an American prospective on free speech. This influences my opinions greatly.

Luckily, the United States is but a single country in the world.

Yeah. That's why I added those last couple of sentences to the end of my post. I know that many other countries do not treat speech in this way, and that is absolutely fine with me. If you prefer to live in a country where speech is restricted so that people aren't offended, that is completely fine. However, if you feel the way I do, then America (or a similar country) is probably the country for you. That's just how it is. Find the country that suits your desires and live there.

No, I don't.

Just because you would be so premature to sue someone for insulting you or harassing you on the Internet it does not mean that everyone else would. I wouldn't, I'm smarter than that, and it saddens me to see how many people would go this far to "make an example" on the internet. You will not accomplish anything, ever.

Had it been real life, I'd care, then I would consider it serious, the internet is not. Additionally, I'm 99.9% certain that the guy wouldn't behave the way he did had it been in real life. This should emphasize my point.

I disagree with this person being an asshole and getting away with it but can you not ban people from own3d chat or something?

I agree the person should be punished but doesn't it take a very long time to handle legal cases and suing people is it really worth it for jessica? She seems to already be having a hard time than to have legal matters to attend because someone was mean to you on the internet.

Whenever Jessica wages on of her netizen wars, I sing 'merica, FUCK YEAH!, replaying 'Merica with Jessicuh.

I tihnk it's kind of silly to sue someone over cyber bullying, but then again, I've become pretty jaded trough prolonged use of the internetz. Maybe it's good to set a precedent like this in the esports scene, it will surely scare off a bunch of online warriors.
I think esports is pretty nice.
