The fact is that people generally like watching other people that they can relate with, of which nationality and heritage is a huge part. It's mildy xenophobic, sure, but not really racist.

Ugh, the race card. Can't you guys fathom someone wanting a player from their home country to do well without being racist? It's not about skin color. It's about hometown heros. Good grief, Charlie Brown...

You realise people like Illusion and KawaiiRice and shit aren't white right?
edit: Oh god why am I even getting involved in this.

Random player from US/Canada/Many places in the World will have plenty of interviews/stuff in english, eventually even post here. Korean (and others) --> Funny signs that i have no idea what they mean.
Guess to who i can relate/care for?
If i'm racist for not being as interested in people i can't understand as i am in the ones i can understand then well... Call me racist (and your dumb).
Btw: Stephano is of tunisian decent? Now for all i know, tunisian got not exactly the best "propaganda" going for them in europe... Yet people still "rally" behind him... But they are probably all just to stupid to realise that he isn't white?...

TL fighting, great job Taeja!

Here's a question for those that think the korean influx will make SC2 less entertaining:
Does the NHL suffer because NHL teams "import" a lot of players from Russia, Finland, Sweden, Slovakia, the Czech Republic etcetera? Go browse through the NHL team rosters and note how many "foreigners" (that is, non-american/canadian) are in there. NJ Devils are 12 foreigners to 13 American/Canadian players. NY Rangers are 8 foreigners to 18 American/Canadians. Do americans hate the NHL because they only have 24% of the roster from their country? Are the canadians (with 53%) destroying that sport for the americans?
There are more "foreigners", as a percentage, in the NHL than there are Koreans in Team Liquid.
My wager is that the NHL might lose it's position as the "premier" hockey tournament of the world if it did not have the financial ability to pick up players from all over the planet. The NHL benefits. The NHL teams benefit. The NHL fans benefit. And it brings in international fans for the NHL as well, which brings in more money to the NHL, which is what ensures the teams have the ability to keep snagging our best players. I just don't understand why it would be different in SC2. When Hero won Dreamhack I was almost in tears, so happy for the guy finally getting his huge breakthrough. I don't care that he isn't Swedish (which I am), I care that he fought for it, he deserved it, he is an awesome guy, and he wears the TeamLiquid shirt.
Yes, seeing the home dudes take games is always nice. I cheer for Thorzain, SjoW, Naniwa etcetera too. But where do you think MLG would be if it wasn't for non-americans, including Koreans? If it was only americans and canadians I wouldn't watch. I wouldn't have paid up for Arena and Gold, because there wouldn't be enough high-quality play going on to motivate me to bring up my CC. But when it attracts the best of all nations, no matter which team, we get awesome play and it becomes worth my money - and then the tournament can grow, which means E-sports get more exposure, and our sport can get even more awesome. What's wrong with that?
That bull aside: awesome play Taeja, welcome to TeamLiquid. So awesome to see another TL Terran now that TLO turned traitor again... :D

I'm dumb, yet you spell your dumb. ok.
I can go on and on why what you said is hogwash, especially considering all the anti korean comments in the LR threads during every major tourney.
Stephano being Tunisian, I knew that, but most people didn't know that early on and I still don't think most people don't know he's Tunisian.

I have no problem with foreign teams giving opportunities to Korean players to play in over-seas tournaments and gain exposure in the foreigner community. I think it's better for SC2 as an eSport, better for the players, and better for the teams. The only "losers" in this are marginal foreigner players not quite good enough to get onto the foreigner teams who now may have less room because they're sponsoring Korean players. OTOH, it's possible that the marginal revenue/marginal cost for rostering a Korean player is better for a team than sponsoring a marginal foreign player. If that's the case, there may actually be no losers at all! :-O

Lol at how liquid sign Taeja, now he's top of the TLPD ranking. Watched him play a bit a couple of times and he's definitely got a big tournament win coming up if he can start attending foreign ones. GL

The huge difference is that people usually cheer for teams in the NHL and not so much for individual players. Yes of course people have favourite players as well, but mostly its about teams. In contrast to that SC2 fans are usually cheering for individual players more than for teams.

The rest is basically grouped since nobody stands out and that group is called foreigners.

Yeah and if im watching soccer Spain vs Brazil I am a racist because im rooting for the white people from Spain, right? Your posts in this thread are just laughable.
And please stop calling foreigners bad or lazy, they work hard and are damn fucking good but people like you just have no clue how things work.

Xenophobic to cheer for your countrymen? Look up the definition.

I classify gamers to these groups
1. Top korean gamers 2. Top foreign gamers 3. Foreign korean gamers 4. Foreign gamers
1. Group is gamers that are currently playing mainly at Korea and sometimes participates foreign events (usually wins or places very high). Foreign teams looks to recruit these players when its possible.
2. Small group. These players are sometimes close to "Top korean gamers" skillwise. Regularly beats "Foreign korean gamers" at foreign tournaments or team leagues. When they lose to foreign korean would be more upset or weak period of gaming. Foreign teams wants these players badly.
3. Recruited by foreign teams when they were top cream of group 1. (or close of it) but after about year they tend to lose most of "skill" to compete korean leagues (mainly because a lot of foreign tournaments requiring less attention to win). They usually win one or two foreign tournaments early on but then sunk down below top foreign level slightly. Still beats regularly "foreign gamers". Foreign teams might not look these players but rather go group 1. or 2. instead.
4. Gamers that try to overcome "Foreign korean gamers" group to get fame and possible recruited by top foreign team. Few solid tournaments and they are already known as "korean slayers" and might get more invitations and playtime to team leagues.
