Hello Orb
I really like your analysis having first seen it on NASL and I then started to watch your stream. I like banter and a little jokey BM however I noticed an undercurrent with some of your viewers (not the very rude insulting ones just naive). I found your replies somewhat OTT.
It is one thing putting less informed people right, quite another being quite so derogatory, especially as they choose to watch your stream. I stopped watching your stream after this time and although this current furore is mostly a shame for you I do not find it entirely surprising.
I hope you learn and grow from this as you are young guy with oodles of esport commentating talent and it would be a waste for the community and especially yourself if you let your temper get the better of you.
I remember Artosis stating once he used to be a really bad BMer and I notice on his stream it pops out after a bad loss however with age he has matured and he manages to restrain himself from anything that could be held against him or question his professionalism (not suggesitng he would have said anything like what you did). Learn from Artosis...I do not expect you to turn into a Sheth but restraint is key
Lastly I would say do not give up...persevere...maybe create somelearning VOD's liked d'Apollo does...give something back...stay humble, remember your are not entitled to success but have to earn it and you can turn this around.

Until then, one of my favorite casters has departed my favorite team, and this makes me sad. We'd all be better for tolerating racist and homophobic rants? Come on man, really? Where did orb ever say that he hated black people and gay people? Oh, wait, he didn't? Because the way he was using the word made it interchangeable with any vulgarity? It had no racial meaning? Oh yeah, you're taking it out of context. EDIT: Zergmeister, what you said.
So it's normal, and excusable, to say "dumb n****"? Because it's interchangeable? No it's not, and he repeated it several times, this is racism, you fan boys can try to defend him all you want, this is simply his racism when he rages, fuck why do people try to defend the guy for this? You want to be part of the SC2 scene, you watch how you behave end of story, and I'm fucking glad that a little nerdy racist geek got the ban hammer from EG for saying those words.

Kind of in disbelief you actually got fired over this.
|
I've met Orb at several LANs and I remember that at the first Cybergrounds LAN he raged at someone and called them the N-Word there as well.
|
Yeahhh
no way...-orb- were the best commentator out there...
this SUCKs
because saying nigger is not being racist even if u mean it. There's no such a thing...if u accept nigger as an insult then u are the true racist...Lot of black people made their names in history saying "I'm nigger", and I envy them to face the word and make them realise that the truth is that we are all equals. So if u accept anyone saying "nigger" as an insult (even if he is meaning) you are being racist too, because u have a opinion that nigger is a bad thing.
WE ARE EQUALS !!! =P
-orb- you noob, yet a very good commentator.

I've been working 3 years in the labour law department of a lawyer office. My law practitioner sense is deep in the red at the moment.
You do not have to not mark my word. All I'm saying is you could, and in my opinion should, seek legal advice. Sure he could do that, but after that who would want to employ him if there is even the slightest threat of a lawsuit if something controversial happens.
I'm sorry but "something controversial" is way too vague of a notion here. I'm talking about violating the labour law, period.
If we are to set "precedents" of that magnitude, under the emblem of professionalism, I guess it's only fair that both sides act that way and get "punished" when they don't. Why would employer be spared?
While the risk of ostracism remains, I'm quite sure there still is, in this industry, employers that face sufficient integrity, dare I say professionalism, to understand what was at hand.

This community disgusts me more and more everyday. Destroying someone's life for something like this. But all of this comes from this thing called Reddit which is more and more, day after day like is older brother 4chan (this sentence will aggro some people, for sure): a bunch of pathethic human beings who believe they form a "community" and try to make other people live as bad and insignificant as their own.
Good luck Orb.
(Oh, and don't call me an orb fan, I hate him as a player and a caster but nobody deserves this for so few bad things).

Only racists, bigots and homophobes are the ones who truly want to ban these words, as by doing that, they will reinforce the differences between the sexes and the races. This makes no sense. When people consider words like nigger to be so powerfully racist, regardless of context, all they do is highlight the differences between races, when in reality, we should be striving to eliminate most considerations of race. Same reason hate crime legislation is an incredibly stupid thing. When people make such a big deal about race, you only greater bigger racial divides.
So you have a logical argument what you're saying. The importance is measured by how much it affects you. If you choose to not be affected by it then it has no importance.
But I think what alot of people that are offended are trying to say is that the respect you show people is largely demonstrated by your use of the English language (of course there are other ways). When i say something is fucking retarted (which I do) i'm not being careful about retarded people's feelings. But at some point you need to draw a line. You can decide that "retared" is (maybe) acceptable but "nigger" or "faggot" is not. In my opinion nigger and faggot show much greater lack of respect and are more insulting than using the word "retared" and the context is identical.
Why? because nigger used to be a truly racist terms whites used to call black back in the days black were completely considered inferior. However retarded people have been around forever and in all races and cultures. So, i fully understand the reaction here, and I agree with it.
In a defferent world perhaps no one would be offended by words. Wish it was so.

son youve fucked up and discovered just how spite ridden many people are.
I hope you can rise above this. There are very few people who have what it takes. Time to find out if you have it.

Such a joke. I swear the sc2 community gets whinier and whinier every day.

In this case the use of the word nigger was as an insult. That's the context. How do you propose to eliminate consideration of race when people refer to a specific race as an insult? The process of a word changing it's meaning is amelioration/pejoration, and if you observe a great deal of American youth, nigger and faggot is definitely going through amelioration (or pejoration, depending on how you see it) South Park has an episode that does a fantastic job of highlighting how the younger generations view words like faggot. Just because some ignorant kids use it without meaning doesn't mean it has no meaning though.

I really can't believe people can be so sensitive about these matters. This is the internet. Stuff like this happens all the time and it doesn't make you a racist. What it means is that you are a hot head and you should be taken as such. I feel that people are too careful nowadays and make a too much of a deal about racism. People are too afraid to be seen as racist and take too much caution and too severe countermeasures against acts like these. I'm just shocked that -orb- got fired because this.
Don't let this get to you. Be smart and stick to the SC2 community, we are quick to forgive.
|
Orb, don't let this get to you. People are just fucking stupid.
Also, I dislike EG quite a lot now. That was a fucking terrible. move, to fire you.

Orb i understand we all make mistakes and I am sorry you had to learn the hard way that actions have consequences.
Thank you for the apology. I for one wont mind watching your casts now where as before I would not.
Good luck in life

You knew the truthful side because it's my only side.
Not only was I right from the start and did NOTHING to stir this witchhunt other than say "he's been acting like this since beta, why are people suddenly surprised now?", but orb had the gall to try and guilt-trip/slander me publicly for doing so.
Any sympathy I had for orb evaporated the minute he decided to lie. There's nothing I hate more than dishonesty.

the fact that we still live in a world where typed words (or said aloud for that matter) can result in harsh punishment such as this speaks more about our advancement as a civilization than any advancement we've made towards racial equality
to the CEO of EG, i honestly don't care about your black education background. as long as we as a people place this harshness on a single word despite the true meaning of it's use (it's already been said again and again that we all know Orb isn't racist), we're just as bad as the creators of the word because we're the ones that are making it such a vile word.
words and their meanings change all the time so why are you trying to preserve this one? let it change for fucks sake
Orb should have gotten a slap on the wrist and a small lecture on how he's in the spotlight now and needs to think about his reputation even when he's not in public. The actions taken against him are a step in the wrong direction towards race equality.

Orb, you and I have crossed paths a few times way back in the BW days. The first, second, third, etc impressions were all similar. Your behaviour was often aggressive and hostile even as I can recall years ago. Not particularly to me per se, but just in general, it was an aura around your character through chat. I don't know if that was your passion for the game coming through or just who are; probably both.
I've seen your involvement in the community grow you into a respected member. From this, I can say I have never been a fan because of who you were, and I believe who you still are, to an extent. Ironically, I believe your apology to be sincere. I didn't dislike you because I know you have done things to make the community prosper, but your past interactions with myself, and others from the scene who I knew kept me from crossing that threshold into being what I would call a friend at the time.
Not a lot of people here can recall who Testie even was. But those who do, can't forget his hacking scandal. And all the others who fell when new hacking investigation methods arose. I won't name any more names, but those who are older members here know. Regardless, he was a phenomenal player. But that instance stands out most when people hear or see his name. The same will fall upon your name as well I reckon.
That side of maturity is just not there. You are (were) a personality in the community. And much like a few others (some still going on a timer I feel), your walk on the wirerope has shook too much to stand afoot. Your behaviour was disgusting, and rage, drunkenness, BM, whatever, etc... its still apart of you and not an excuse. I am not surprised this happened. Your name is tarnished, and won't ever be the same. Your ceiling of respect has been lowered considerably today.
