A Calendar Entry, but a link to the LIVE REPORT THREAD.

Totally informational, totally useful, not exactly advertising. I think that would be good to keep in line with TL's principles and rules, but appease those that want a softer stance on the issue (or just want a universal calendar for free, lols).

Will there be LR threads even? Wouldn't they just advertise the tournament like a calendar event?

What about embedding the Dr. Pepper free stream though?

Good call, totally agree.
If MLG is going to charge for Winter Arena and provide no free stream, they should pay for advertising/listing it on TL.
Makes a lot of sense and I support it 100%

I would be a little far and close threads about it (besides the one or two of them announcing the PPV) because a lot of TL users will not (be able to) watch it and suddenly these are converted in a semi-private forums.

At least for a week when they release the VODs, then allow threads about it as always

gsl AOL have always only been PPV.

it does not matter what you have to say. you get instantly banned.

Man this is super slipperty slope. If an event isn't listed on TL, that is HUGE. TL is THE starcraft site to read and watch content. Exposure on TL is vital. Not agreeing or disagreeing with TL's decision, but this is interesting.

Perfect right up. It shouldn't be that much of a problem for MLG, all those that were going to watch the finals anyways probably already have gotten the PPV pass.

Will the live report threads still be okay?

Yes the LR threads and news threads will be as usual, even if some people aren't watching we still feel that TL should be a place to discuss things and interact with other fans.

Yeah, even if you make the most insightful comment, if you include something about getting banned for saying it, you will get banned. Of course if you say something truly insightful it'll probably just be a temp ban. :-)

It is the business decision MLG has made - if they shoot themselves in the foot it is their own fault.

Based on TL rules, the LR thread will be allowed (just like the many other MLG threads...) because they provide substantial and important information to TL users. You get to read LR for games you don't get to watch, and find out who wins and how the brackets are progressing. So threads like that should be allowed, and I am sure they will.

This makes sense.

In all technicality I guess MLG could bitch and moan about their interview/hangout stream that will be free that they will be running. It technically is a free stream and could be considered similar to something like SOTG, or GSL's off the record. Also,
The Dr Pepper MLG Ultimate Access stream will be completely free all weekend. The first match aired on each of the four other streams, on both Friday and Saturday, will also be free to everyone.

Specifically the second part. Can't that be on TL's calendar?

We decided that just listing the first match really isn't going to work, it's confusing and inconsistent to list the first 5% of an event. While we don't want to go judge what percentage of an event needs to be free to qualify as a "free stream," I think everyone would agree that 1 match per day is far below that line. The event is either free or its not, we're not going to pick and choose which parts to list.

I do see where you are coming from, but at the same to it could be considered a disservice to the TL user who could log on and say: "Oh look a free MLG match for me to watch let's see some high level stuff! :D :D"

But yeah, I really have no problems with this the way it is. MLG has said their tournies with audiences will not be PPV, so this issue will only apply for arenas such as this one. If MLG can just match GSL prices for their future arenas, the bitching will go away and maybe they could do a silly comprimise and give a free 240p stream to torture us.

I really don't think this will hurt MLG that much. I mean, if you don't know about the event by now, you most likely aren't watching it. And even if its on the calendar and catches the eye of some people, once they find out it cost $20, they probably wouldn't tune in anyways. TL will still have coverage of it, so if you come to TL you will see it, just not on the calendar.

I wonder how this policy will impact this and future PPV sales. Not being calendared on TL has ended events before it took off before.

If exposure on TL is vital, then MLG is building a business with its key foundations firmly resting on the shoulders of other companies/organizations.

Team Liquid for exposure. Blizzard for servers, license and the game itself. Twitch for delivery. The teams for the players.

Who would build a business at the complete mercy of so many vital outside services, they do not control their own fate at all.

It would very muchly depend on how much TL wanted for a sponsored event.

Exactly. I doubt anyone who bought the ticket will forget when it's on. The TL Calendar is also a very detailed, well organized free service so I don't understand why people are complaining about something they get for free. Or would they like it to cost $0.50 a day to have more complete information? :p

I still like my idea though, to link a calendar entry to the LR thread.

I'm surprised they didn't pay for the slot on the calendar to be honest.... I mean they put a commercial out on Twitch, I can't think that a TL slot would be anywhere near that much? Could be wrong though. TL is a huge SC2 hub though, seems like a no brainer to me... but we'll see how their #'s go. I hope it's successful but they take a look at why so much flak came up.

Maybe I'm a minority, but I very rarely use the TL Calendar as a reminder to view major events like MLG or DH or whatever. It's nice to have the event listed on the calendar for easy clicking, but I pretty much know what I want to watch, and if it's not listed in the calendar, it's a search result away.

Hmm, I just thought of something... Hot_Bid (or other TL admin), you've said you don't have a sponsored calendar section (yet), but the events that you put in the TL banner (looking at the "ASUS ROG in 1 day 6 hours" right now) kinda acts like that. I guess it's for a major event that is not immediate enough (i.e. in the next 12-24 hours) to show up on the regular calendar.

I could totally see that as functioning as a sponsored event space. In fact, I remember a few months ago noticing that a major upcoming event wasn't shown there as I expected. Ironically, or perhaps fittingly, I can't remember now what that event was. How does TL determine what goes up there? Is it limited to events for which TL has created a portal? If so, this naturally leads to asking how TL determines which events to create portals for...
