I appreciate I may be at risk of overstepping my bounds as a user, but it seems that having the above quote as a mod note may stop a lot of the discussion about "why don't TL accept it just ebcause it's PPV?" although I appreciate that is explained to not be the case in the OP.

The only interesting point that was brought forward is that the TL calendar is definitely not (and was arguably never meant to be) the reference I expected it to be for all things sc2. Where are we supposed to go to have an unbiased and complete view of all the events in the sc2 world now? If you find out, please let me know. Until then, I'll keep wasting my time looking at random forum threads and hope the interesting stuff catches my attention.

There is TL.net for informing about SC. Yes, all of TL. That means Liquipedia, the forums, the calendar, the news, the tournament portals, the stream list, TLPD, event tracker, the editorials. The whole package.

If however, all you want is one pure list of ongoing events, maybe this platform is not the right one for you. A smartphone widget is what you need.

I don't think we owe anyone a detailed explanation of the numbers or our finances, but this 10k rumor is just completely inaccurate and untrue, both in the amounts and that a "TL source" leaked. I would just urge people not to listen to rumors from unverified sources.

Yes that's what I thought. Then I can't understand -at all- that MLG didn't want to pay for it though. They spend truckloads of money (millions), why skimp on a small fee to get a huge amount of attention. Bad business.

Super valid stance. If MLG wants to change the rules to monetise their product TL definitely shouldn't be going out of its way to give them free publicity for something that alienates the majority of their users (unless they're getting well paid for it of course, thats how advertising works..!).

This post has rather randomly given me an amusing mental image of Hot Bid for bringing a knife to a chess game... This cold virus must have sent my brain funny.

Oh please, a lot of the European users have never hidden their distaste for MLG in the past. It pops up every time a tournament is scheduled at shitty time for Europe, which most MLGs seem to be, and it doesn't stop for a week. Don't you remember the NASL stream times before their cast a European stream? Holy shit, there was a bitch storm from months. But let a few Americans bitch about the time Assembly or Dreamhack is streamed, and we're xenophobic assholes that think the world should bow to our sleep schedules.

But to get at HotBid's point, I don't see where people are taking issue with it. MLG refused to pay the fee that TEAMLIQUID wanted to charge for having a link to a solely PPV event on the TEAMLIQUID CALENDAR so Teamliquid in turn refused to buckle and change their longstanding rules for one company.

Really though, someone will have to walk me through this.

Yeah. It comes down to the first amendment of this page. It's their house. When tournaments promote themselves, they do it at the grace of TL.net.

I can see TL not wanting to be reduced to just an informational outlet. I can see TL wanting to be also an informational outlet in addition to being a community. It's more about promoting the ecosystem.

I'm a little surprised that MLG didn't simply Estimate referral traffic and offer that amount.

They must have some number of sign-ups they anticipate through TL, which they would have kicked back $1 for under the referral program.

Since the direct referral was declined, I'm surprised they didn't simply offer the anticipated equivalent amount as a sponsored fee.

Like if they figured 5,000 people would be sign ups through TL...just offer you $5000. (I don't know/care what the number is, but they've clearly got some ideas what it is)

This times 1000! Rather annoyed by the victim role MLG wants to play but oh well. Liquid`Hero will be at Assembly so I'm not missing anything this weekend.
Now we are both in the club of "people who caught mice and asked IRC what to do". Mine was caught face first on a glue trap though, but his back legs were free and he was pushing the trap all over my house. I ended up drowning him. - Lemonwalrus

This is really, really bad for MLG. It's hard to estimate the amount of viewers they'll get but i'm guessing it won't be very high at all.

It is honestly bullshit to be completely honest in MY opinion..

You link to GOMtv, which I have to watch on a completely different website and video player. GOM is monetizing/advertising their site, league, media player, while TL.net is getting nothing out of it...

Now MLG comes along, they want to monetize/advertise their site, league, stream service, and MLG takes some bullshit moral stance against it?

If you are charging GOM the same amount of money as you wanted to charge MLG, then that's fine. But if you are just picking and choosing who you want to advertise on your calender, then I guess i'll have to find a new resource for all upcoming events T_T.

It's not really, really bad for MLG. It's a minor setback for this specific Arena branded tournament but that's all, which we all know wasn't looking too strong before this decision by TL.net if the polls and general reaction was anything to go by after it was announced.

I wonder how much TL was asking if MLG turned it down without negotiating the price.

I can't imagine TL charging so much that MLG didn't feel it's worthwhile to have their event on the largest info site in the industry.

Interesting post nonetheless.

Missing out on all the dropin viewers that see the stream on TL isn't minor. There's the impulse purchase factor that would play a big role in people buying this event even though they've been resistant to it beforehand.

Is there not a free stream associated with this event?
