MLG Adam said on SoTG #63 that they were exponentially ahead of where they expected to be in terms of sales of passes.

I don't think there's any need to feel sad for them. I suspect they're going to do very well this weekend.

Do you really think they would say they are doing horrible and no one has bought their passes if that were the case? Of course not because that would create a negative vibe around the event and make people on the fence hesitate that they would be watching an event that no one else is watching. They want to create a positive vibe and you do that by saying what they have. Unless they are providing hard numbers understand everything that comes out of them is PR. It's no different than politics at this point.

So much for getting bigger and pushing the hype machine, MLG. SC2 is not mainstream enough to be sustainable without the support of the nerds.

On the other hand, I think it was about money as well. TL earns money for traffic and ads while they have stream window. PPV denies that kind of revenue obviously. MLG didn't want to share the cake, then TL went away and MLG did not try to make them come back.

Agreed, although TL might be salty for MLG charging PPV, they're really doing eSports a disservice by not supporting this tournament. By supporting this decision, you're not supporting the growth in eSports which is what MLG is trying to do. PPV is a step in the right direction and will eventually become the new norm.

Thats just it, this was an opportunity for two organizations with similar goals in mind to come to an agreement and avoid conflict where there needn't be any. Instead, TL seems to think that supporting MLG is no longer in their interest, and this is not good.

I understand the viewpoint, but I do not agree with the final decision nor the way it was conducted now.

TL as always tries to be transparent but there are questions here that need to be answered. If MLG offered referral program participation and TL refused and TL offered advertising space and MLG refused, then it seems to me that it's a question of money rather than principle. Didn't MLG offer enough money through the referral program and TL wanted more for advertising? Unless we know those numbers, it's hard to take this announcement at face value.

Secondly, it seems an impossible task for MLG (or anyone) to " find a revenue model that allows them to keep running successful events." if PPV will immediately cause costs to increase and reduce their community advertising. We know that TL is the hub for all things to SC2 and not being showcased here will damage their event.

Although, I don't think TL is the cause of these problems. I can imagine that MLG did not talk to TL quite as much as they could have, nor has MLG gone to great lengths to actually pay for these services (which, to be honest, are taken for granted by many). On the other hand, the Winter Arena must be one of the most frequently mentioned topics on TL at the moment, so perhaps removing the calendar option is mostly a demonstration of attitude than an actually painful lesson being taught to MLG.

Neither of these conversations (the referral program or the calendar spot) reached the point where we were negotiating prices at all. We declined to be a part of the referral program for the reasons we stated, and they did not feel we should charge anything for the calendar entry.

Really?! MLG never once asked, "How much would this cost?"

Yeah, seems a bit weird. In that case both parties just draw a line in the sand and that was that. Maybe MLG just don't value the calendar link too much so they didn't bother.

Especially if you are from vVv gaming staff then this is a really dumb post to make. All you are doing is starting drama in a childish way and representing your team in a bad light.

What?

No. TL calendar and live stream never was a place where you could see a calendar with every fucking single SC2 events and content possible on it. It was a place where you could see a list of free embebded stream, quickly and easily.

It's not "a dick move", nor a try to kill eSports or MLG. And for god sake, PPV is not the future of eSport, it's bullshit. Seriously, MLG handled that one so poorly, it's not even funny.

TL took a fair stance. If you are doing a PPV only event, you need to pay to be part of the new featured stream list, including the featured PPV event. TL just draw a line... a line that make sense and that is reasonable.

MLG want to grow by going PPV... cool for them. TL want to grow by charging money to the event that want to be featured on the Calendar and stream... how is that unfair? Do you know another website that give free ads to PPV content for the sake of it?

So MLG can charge money for their events but TL can't charge for their advertisement space? Come on already, this is completly retarded.

I am not against MLG nor PPV. I will probably buy a ticket tomorow, because I feel like watching all those games live. If you want to go PPV, fine, that's cool... but then don't expect people to advertise your product for free. This make no senses, at all.

And TL did way more for eSport that MLG. Actually, MLG is having success only because of TL and SC2.

theyll do as i suspect. i can confrim this after the event when i state that it went as i had expected it to go.
but i get it. i get what you want to say.

ive seen all podcasts with MLG people popping out all of a sudden. does change absolutly nothing about my oppinion on the topic. and i´ve heard nothing more then blablablabla PR blablabla PR..

thing is.. why would you say that its already a failure beforehand? lets just say, for the sake of this arguement, that MLG already know they haven´t sell enough tickets. there is no fracking reason to admit it BEFORE the event. they would sell even less if theyd do so. you cant take anything seriously what wnyone from MLG says in public. it would be insane if you would admin it beforehand that it wont be a sucess you would sshh costumers away.

so my point is not MLG going to fail. my point is you cant refere to something someone from this company stated in a podcast.

i read newspapers. i have a major in bullshit detection.

teamliquid > MLG

ps. "inside source" is such crap. everyone can do this. i have an inside source saying Sundance likes to sleep in a pijama with ponies on it.

Definatly agree with the decision that was made. Although at this point, with all the drama threads and polls about MLG PPV, will the calendar link really be that important? Gotta believe just about every TLer is aware of the event from the sheer amount of discussion around it

I think this topic about the 10k is just a huge "feeding the troll" thing. Source is unconfirmed or stated, extravageant amount, person has no real knowledge of costs.

stop making crude generalizations about how TL is destroying e-sports by not supporting MLG. PPV will not be the norm. all evidence indicates otherwise. I love how people have somehow adopted the impression that MLG are losing money and are the good guys in all this trying to salvage e-sports. are they really? they are still one of the most well sponsored tournaments and yet offered one of the smallest prize pools in all of e-sports. You think they're just going to drop sponsors if the PPV model proves successful? yeah right. as far as I'm concerned, they're just abusing their popularity to extract more money from fans.

So.. this could just be a rumor..but comes from a very reliable source..

The amount requested by TL was 10k????

The only reason I bring this up is because I support TL's decisions, I am against how MLG handled the PPV..but if the 10K is the amount.. then I have to now disagree with TL's decision! That amount of money would be purely a 'money grab' and make what TL did here look very poor.

Can anyone confirm this amount. Any comment from TL? I love what TL is doing here and I agree with their stance on this.. but for 10K..that's absurd.

My God, why do you talk for Jerith? They already said that no talks of money was ever made before this reliable source ever spoke up. It's all now "he said/she said" and since TL already said nothing was made, I doubt they'd go back on their word if there was any truth to this source.

You won't get a public confirmation with a name rofl. Don't advocate for transparency and confirmation when you won't reveal source, too contradictory

It was not Jerith that I heard that amount from. I am just asking. The person that I heard it from could have very well heard it from someone else.. this is why I ask. I really don't have a clue.. but would very much like to find out. Honestly though.. if TL comes out and says "hey.. its non of your business"... then I am more then fine with that answer, because it really is non of our business. However, if the amount is 10K, regardless of what response TL gives.. then I just feel like it is an absurd amount of money and kind of changing the entire 'feel' of this thread and the entire situation.

Just my inquiring mind sir.

Wasn't MLG in the red after each event, and what evidence is there that people are making a bunch of money off of SC2 right now?
