I agree. I don't find PPV only if that's what they want to try that's fine. But I'm glad TL isn't just a large ad for it

That does not make any sense at all. You completely different things in relation which just are not.

liquid (the team) and teamliquid.net (the site) are different things. Sure the site holds some bias for the team they share their name with, but the site has come a long way from the BW days (when liquid was a clan). This thread was more about the advertisement policy and to prevent organizations from using teamliquid.net and its users to benefit themselves, as well as add some guidelines for future events. It could also mean a subtle disapproval of MLG's PPV system as they will not show the stream.

MLG paying for the players to fly to NYC is a different matter entirely.

TLPro.net is fairly new. Teamliquid.net and the Pro version are still part of TeamLiquid and they share the same revenue. It's like saying EPSN and espn.go.com/nba are two different entities. They are not, they are the same entity with different content. The players are STILL a part of TL.net..so no...it is not a different matter.

How is posting the event on the calander a "large ad"? It's not like the Asus ROG countdown that is running constantly in the upper right hand corner...

This isn't a gameplay channel, its a stream of players in a lounge. While there isn't a clear line of what percentage a tournament has to be free to be counted as a "free stream" I would say at least the gameplay portions must be free.

I'd say it should be among the featured live-streams as [Misc] if anyone featured on TL can stream whatever they want and go online on TL under [Misc], especially considering the press restrictions.

I totally agree with you on this. This event is not only a MAJOR event for SC2, but it is also featuring TL's own players. I think they should at least show MLG a bit of love...

They're not 'helping' TL, they're buying a service that the TL players are providing. It's a professional business deal, they're not doing it out of charity. When you hire a lawyer or a carpenter you don't say you're 'helping' him, you're hiring him to do a job.

edit: on the topic, good a just decision by TL. If you bring a free service/tournament to the community, you may use the calendar for free. If your tournament requires payment, you too are required to pay for the advertisement. Makes perfect sense.

We believe that a PPV-only stream listing is advertising that outweighs the contribution and utility to our calendar. While MLG understood our viewpoint, they disagreed with our decision to charge for PPV stream calendar advertising.

Wow, MLG = hypocrites. Good choice TL.

ASUS did pay TL to post that

its US EASTERN. I think that GMT -5, but I have no idea

Anyhow I think not highlighting the event is the wrong way to go. Some tournaments try to make revenue via adds, MLG is trying via PPV. I don't see the difference in advertising them from TLs POV. It is not like the other tournaments that TL puts on the calendar are for charity. If you really don't like the PPV then don't link their stream, just put a event header or link to the site like with GOMTV(Who's free-stream is essentially a radio broadcast for all that you can see).

I honestly think ROG will have more viewers then MLG,
Maybe its time for another "foreign" tourny to get there deserved attention.

I agree with oldmanzerg: if TL doesn't want to include PPV events on its calendar (let's not discuss wether or not the Arena of Legends was on the calendar, because if my memory recalls correctly it was), then they don't need to. Their site, their rules.

However, seeing that there is a free stream that is part of the tournament I think that this should be featured. I don't like the idea that if you can't see the matches then it doesn't belong on the calendar, but their site - their rules. Oldmanzerg's solution to put it as a miscellaneous live stream is fair and reasonable.

I do not disagree with you on this matter. I was just saying that there are other variables that TL could take into consideration for this matter.

MLG could just put a 400x300 resolution free stream and problem solved. It's good enough to hear what's happening, but you can't see much more than blurs. Kind of an improvement from a person listening to radio and wouldn't block so many ppl that can't afford to pay.

Well, it's obviously a logical decision by TL...

TL can't simply offer free advertisement to PPV event, simply to "help eSport"... TL is still a business. MLG want to jump into the PPV model, now they have to advertise their shit by their own.

MLG want to be "featured" everywhere freely, while charging every viewer money?... this is just retarded, and completly hypocrite. They are really asking for charity.

owell. as long as they keep to this policy in the future...

This was discussed in the first few pages, go back and read all the hot-bid posts, they are easy to find while scrolling.
As I understood, the AoL was first PPV, and not listed, but then at some point changed to free, at which point it got added to the calender.

It is. TL was willing to put put the stream link and put the event in the calender but MLG did not want to be charged for it. So TL decided not to put up the stream listing. This is an issue of advertisement of free events vs PPV events. Tournament organizers decision to pay for their competitors flight and accommodations should have no effect on what gets advertised.

Sure it would be nice if TL listed MLG's winter arena but TL are not bound to do so.

Yeah, amazing isn't it.
MLG does a PPV : please pay us to support ESPORTS, we need revenue.
TL says "You have to pay us for advertising", MLG says : no, we don't want to pay for what should be free. MLG has the same thought process than his angry customers xD
