Providing valuable free advertising, visible to all users of this site, for a pay-per-view event that provides no free stream option, and of which only 11% of TL users have cared enough to indicate on a poll that they would actually pay for and thus be able to watch, doesn't make much sense.

awww man... i dont think MLG can be compared to GSL where it feels worth of money to buy for me. Sucks i was really looking forward to see it but im not gonna pay for watching foreign tournament that just doesnt make any sense to me (there will be some people who are gonna upload it on youtube anyways).. Respect to liquid, its a reasonable decision. Will see how this turns out

I respect the decision, but you guys do link to unembedded streams sometimes, yeah?

GSL is a way too big part of the scene to ignore, a lot of people only follow GSL and they do provide a free stream at least. And that is the only unembedded stream that I can think of.

Perfect right up. It shouldn't be that much of a problem for MLG, all those that were going to watch the finals anyways probably already have gotten the PPV pass.

Will the live report threads still be okay?

Yes the LR threads and news threads will be as usual, even if some people aren't watching we still feel that TL should be a place to discuss things and interact with other fans.

Makes sense, at the end of the day if you paid for the ticket, you're gonna know when/where to go to watch it, having it on the sidebar would just be pure advertisement really

They DO have a free stream. One of the channels is streaming free content. What about that?

And MLG getting shit stormed last week for having only PPV will get even less numbers tuning in when they are not in the liquid calender. I think Assembly gonna be this weekends big tournament. Maybe not as stacked, but still very interesting groups.

I understand the viewpoint, but I do not agree with the final decision nor the way it was conducted now.

TL as always tries to be transparent but there are questions here that need to be answered. If MLG offered referral program participation and TL refused and TL offered advertising space and MLG refused, then it seems to me that it's a question of money rather than principle. Didn't MLG offer enough money through the referral program and TL wanted more for advertising? Unless we know those numbers, it's hard to take this announcement at face value.

Secondly, it seems an impossible task for MLG (or anyone) to " find a revenue model that allows them to keep running successful events." if PPV will immediately cause costs to increase and reduce their community advertising. We know that TL is the hub for all things to SC2 and not being showcased here will damage their event.

Although, I don't think TL is the cause of these problems. I can imagine that MLG did not talk to TL quite as much as they could have, nor has MLG gone to great lengths to actually pay for these services (which, to be honest, are taken for granted by many). On the other hand, the Winter Arena must be one of the most frequently mentioned topics on TL at the moment, so perhaps removing the calendar option is mostly a demonstration of attitude than an actually painful lesson being taught to MLG.

This will make little difference to MLG as the people who will be watching have already paid and know where and when to watch it.

This isn't a gameplay channel, its a stream of players in a lounge. While there isn't a clear line of what percentage a tournament has to be free to be counted as a "free stream" I would say at least the gameplay portions must be free.

I thought there will be one free stream? The Dr. Pepper Ultimate Access stream with ads? Maybe I'm wrong?

Ah, nevermind. Someone already addressed it. Sorry/ :D

That stream is essentially the free bread a restaurant gives you with your dinner.

As stated I don't really see the TL calender having any real bearing on a PPV only event so having it listed is just clogging up space. This thread did remind me just how close the tournament actually is and I really should get around to buying the PPV myself lol

Interesting decision, I do hope they succeed, but it's looking more and more like it's going to be non-linearly expensive to run a non-free to watch event.

Also thank you for putting together the post about your side of the story before we heard about it elsewhere, at least this way it's mostly out in the open.

Neither of these conversations (the referral program or the calendar spot) reached the point where we were negotiating prices at all. We declined to be a part of the referral program for the reasons we stated, and they did not feel we should charge anything for the calendar entry.
