I was watching the T.V show, Alcatraz Then I saw jose garcia(from the show lost) playing starcraft 2 and playing a PvP match on Metalopolis and holding off a 4 gate.
I am pretty happy how Esports is growing even on T.V shows for a quick second, I had a big smile on my face :D (I am sure someone will have a video on youtube sometime soon)
Aww, I was hoping prisoners got to play Starcraft. That's sweet it's on TV though, and not just South Park WoW. Didn't see the show, maybe it was someone in prison, but I meant real prisoners.
However, on second thought, that's probably a bad way to get stalked or otherwise messed with by dangerous inmates.

Cool stuff. Too bad they cut off the bottom part of the UI, which kinda made it look tacky. But at least they showed a 4gate PvP, which is a pretty believable situation to be in.
huh so this is how something is mainstreamed over time you inject into the system via media and one day its just mainstream. slowly but surely, (haha for anyone who likes those theory talks). So i should go get a PC asap anyone wanna buy it for me?
Haha, well, at least they're giving games a little more respect than normal. Someone has clearly at least played the game who was involved in that scene.
Watching people play Halo with an N64 controller randomly hammering at buttons and talking about getting to the next level is something of an illusion killer.
I like how he keeps looking at his keyboard. People who do anything with computers/video games in TV shows are pretty much guaranteed to look fake at some point, and there it is!

So a guy plays a game that just happens to be Starcraft, how does that mean E-sports are growing?
This is awesome, and it kind of makes me want to check the show out. I'm a fan of Jorge Garcia because of LOST; he gets bonus points from me for playing Protoss (and even more for looking like Goody!)
MC: 4 gate rush, huh?... child's play *walks stalkers down the ramp* MC: that's all you've got? I'm the grandmaster Genius: kekeke *proceeds to smash MC*
This was pretty cool, good to see more things like this in mainstream media, I thought it was awesome when he dropped the line, "Four gate rush... child's play...." =]
Hahah wow that was a decent, cute attempt at integrating it His screen resolution (didnt show the entire bottom bar D: ) bothered me the most, but props!
as great as it is that they are showing sc2 on the tv, they just type casted the players as fat, morbidly obese jailers with nothing better to do, rather than lets say Demuslim who is attractive dude.
this is awesome lol, I've been watching all the episodes so this must be in the newest one. Also, in the Green Lantern movie when they first meet the villain he is in a room with 3 monitors and on one of them is an sc2 game showing some colossus lazering something.
That's actually pretty awesome. They showed the sc2 on screen for way longer than I would've thought. Did blizzard pay for that or something?
I know it's silly but what I noticed was he kept looking down... If you're playing vs a 4-gate your eyes are gonna be glued to the screen to micro and continually warp-in!
this is awesome. I literally loled. its badass how SC2 is secretively working its way into television these days. I know a few months ago Sheldon from "The Big Bang Theory" sported a Zerg tee. Also, the best part of this is I actually have a friend named Jose Garcia :D
Really, this has nothing to do with esport. It's just a fat character playing a video games when he is not making/Reading comics. It's just the stereotype of a nerd, and it's basically the same as 10 or 20 years ago.

Yeah... that's unfortunately a good point. Might be better if the guy playing was some manly character about to go save the world in some super heroic fashion.
can someone help me out. my friend wants to know what songs they played during the opening club sequence. btw sc2 for the win, and yes clearly he doesn't know how to play starcraft 2, but still cool to see it on tv
It was great to see on the show. I think people are probably over stating how important it is.
Most likely, it was one or two writers that play the game. They are fans and wanted to give a "shout-out" to the SC2 community. It's not like the producers were pushing the writers to add a SC2 scene. I highly doubt Blizzard paid for the spot.

Anyway, even though its no where close to accurate, YAY FOR STARCRAFT PLUG
I wonder how much they payed Blizzard for this
They wouldnt have payed blizzard anything obviously. Either blizzard asked them to put it in the show AND PAYED THEM for product placement (this happens all the time) or more likely they just got permission to use it. I highly doubt they would pay blizzard to put one of SC2 on national TV they probably just got permission or payed the show to do product placement I could be wrong though. Its alot different then when a show is streaming starcraft games and making money off of it, I dont think alcatraz is going to make any money off of putting that game in the show , maybe a few viewers will be intrigued from teamliquid but thats about it lol.
So awesome, I may have to start watching this show solely because of this. They could have had him playing Mw3 and jacking off like the vast majority of the audience, but they chose our niche game instead. Cool.
Pretty impressive that they even introduced some SC2 lingo (4 gate rush). Yeah APM seems low but on the other hand spamming like crazy may make the scene awkward for the regular audience
It reminds me a bit of the time when the Gameboy was really hot in a lot of tv series. You know, a kid would be playing the gameboy and you would hear all kinds of 8 bit noises (never from a real game). And always an adult would want to talk to the kid and the kid would put the gameboy away without objection... such unrealistic scenario... ("Nooo dad wait, I almost got through this level...")

Normally people near a computer on TV are typing and hacking at 200+ apm, which they seemed to think was unneeded and would take away from the realism. Little did they know, that in this case 200 apm would be normal if he was really doing what he was portrayed to do.

also don't expect actors to have as quick hands as us gamers unless they were previously gamers/are gamers ^^

Its nice to see the game beign difunded over different channels. I can understand the comments on how this just feed the old stereotypes, but if you follow the show (Alcatraz) you will notice that "Hugo Reyes" is a very geek like and cool character, and it was just natural for him to be the one playing the game as its the only character that fits the "normal gamer" role. If we as gamers dont start changing our own way to look at ourselves as a community these bias will not fade away.
Still, i think its sad that they showed some sort of 4gate... As a T player is what i come across regularly but well... i guess i would have been more pleased with a voidray rush or somethin :D (but yeah.. it was a PvP)

Close. Someone brings in a 360, bunch of games (can't see the titles) and a headset. You can tell where all the marketing is....damn you, nubsoft live.
I didn't know Goody played protoss! His decision making is so good he can hold off a 4gate without looking at the screen or bottom half of the UI. This makes me want to watch alcatraz now, even though i've never heard of it before, it has hurley and a writer who plays sc2.

Yah pretty much, and furthermore, pvp and fourgate, really? The worst the game has to offer? Man 6pool would've been better at this point.
Blizzard cannot into marketing it seems.
You think a person is going to go look up a game played in a tv show? It was cool exposure but I'm sure Blizzard isn't expecting any additional sales
That's kind of true of all productplacement though isn't it?
No? If Blizzard's name and logo had appeared then it would be product placement. As it is, really only people who already know what SC2 is are going to recognize it in the show. The majority of viewers probably saw that 5 second clip and thought nothing of it. I don't think it was aimed to be product placement, someone working on the show probably likes SC2.

I would probably have been right there with you if the, "Your refresh rate is at ZERO!" comment hadnt been right before it.
Lets look at this comment and why its so wrong on so many levels. Setting aside the fact that refresh rate is something to do with your monitor*, lets just assume the annoying 12 year old this guy is trying to impress actually means "ping time." As you probably know your "ping" is a measure of your internet connectivity; it's the time delay between sending and recieving an ICMP echo request.
Unfortunately for the obnoxious nerd on the other end of the phone, he has no access to this information, all he could see would be the time between himself and the battle.net servers. All of this is immaterial, because even the fastest pentagon computer still sends packets over copper wire, after which the signal creeps along at a glacial 2e8 meters/second**. A 'mainframe' even if it could run starcraft on ultra settings with 200 FPS would still lag from bnet anyway.
On a different note, did you see that sick one zealont, one stalker, no pylon 4 gate he was the "master" of?
* Check out that monitor set up. His Double Screen gives him Double Vision, with a giant gap right down the middle where all the micro is happening.
** If he was in Soul playing on the Korean server all his traffic would be on nice fiberoptic cable running at the speed of light, so it could be argued that his, "refresh rate is at like ZERO." Except since he is physically located in the united states even if his traffic got routed directly through fiberoptic cable under the pacific, all his packets would be going through some DPI on its way outbound from the US, giving him some tasty latency.
I have never heard anybody who plays Starcraft 2 use the entire phrase "four gate rush" when talking about a 4gate. This reeks of product placement, and some light forum reading. If you watch his screen, what he is fighting against is clearly not a 4gate. It's pretty cool to see a reference on Alcatraz, but just as with every other TV show allusion to a video game (e.g. WoW on The Big Bang Theory) they managed to get it wrong. T.t

Was cool to see Starcraft in a TV show, but they shoulda showed a huge engagement or something with lots of storms, and other abilities to make Starcraft seem awesome. Someone who doesn't play Starcraft would probably think that looked dull and boring.

that isnt esports. thats just someone playing the game
So if kids playing basketball at the school on a weekend makes it into a tv show, it's not a sport but just basketball?
The institution of esports and the activity of starcraft (or whatever competitive game you're talking about) are inseparable from each other. Regardless of your skill or whether or not you even know what esports is, starcraft is an esport, at least in so far as basketball is a sport even when my sorry ass is trying to play it.

It's called brand integration.
It's a new practice they're doing in an attempt to normalize consumer products through passive dissemination through varied social and entertainment media.
For example, when characters are driving in a car--they don't need to focus on the brand or type of car it is, it's simply "a car" that they character is driving. I know that the video-game industry is trying to use this a new source of advertisement opportunity that is less about brand marketing and is more about experiential marketing.

In defense of supposedly clueless non-sc2 fans...
The actual game play was very much, as you said, dull and boring.
he has super super super silent hands, so it sounds like his apm is very low. in reality those clicks you hear is his chair, because it's about to break down.
Obviously his apm is above 9000! + another theory, I think Jose Garcia is the secret brother of goody, and he taught everything he knows to goody!

OHHHH DAT BURNNNN.
the "grandmaster" has like 10 apm, lol. glad SC2 is getting more exposure on TV though :D
Checked out this series after that short SC2 clip that they showed. Too bad the show sucks.
Bad acting, weird plot line, Lead Actress trying too hard, and Sam Neill's role is just not up to par with his abilities. The only good thing about the show is Hurley is in it. Good to see him working again after Lost. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend this show for anything other than wasting some time.
Stick to Fringe <--- Show much much better than Alcatraz! Much recommended!
IMO, I think the show is great Everyone has opitions on what they think about the show. Also what I men't about "I am glad esports is getting more bigger" is that its good to see Starcraft came a long way to get exposed on even american television( as its very popular in korea)
Also thank you everyone! I wasn't expecting this thread to get as big as it got!
