Everyone involved in the business side of things tells us that in order for us to make sc2 grow we have to start injecting money into it or else its going to crumble. How do we know this? The community is always in the dark, we are expected to keep throwing money at events all for the sake making e-sports grow, without asking questions. If we take a look at European football it is evident that a lot more is known about the financial situation of clubs and players. We know exactly how much each player and coach makes even though they make 1000X the amount of money anyone sc2 makes, hell we even know how much debt a club has. This results in people actually knowing where their money is going. If fans of Barcelona know that their club is having some financial problems as fans they might feel obliged to maybe buy 1 or 2 shirts in order to support their team because they know that team is desperate. Now sc2 they tell us NOTHING but the good ol' "you want e-sports to grow? well then give me money" As long as we are kept in the dark its gonna give the community the feeling that we are being cheated on. If i pay those 20$ will that go to directly back into sc2 or will it be used to create content for LOL, COD and Halo as well? For all we know that money might be going directly into Sundance's pocket. I'm not asking to see every little detail of MLG's business model/incentives just a little bit more than "If we sell 100,000 memberships before the national championship I will raise the prize pool. A lot. Next season too." Very good argument. Also see the thread by FXOBoss about revenue from the FXOIS here : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=306176

I pay for the Internet connexion too. Not even close to the same thing. That's like saying you shouldn't have to buy a new fridge if your one breaks down because you pay for electricity. Most sport is free to watch in most countries, as far as I know. It is free to watch because there's a lot of money to be made through advertising on TV. Internet advertising has not taken off to anywhere near that level and because esports is still a small niche we don't have the numbers to support the sort of tournaments with the sort of prize-money needed to attract viewers and players purely through advertising (yet). If we existed solely of advertising then top prize might be $1000 and the players might all be crap because they couldn't practice full-time. If we grow enough it'll become the same as most other sports, but we are a long way away from there at the moment.

Trying to rationalise the cost of it compared to things like going to the movies is not relevant, comparisons must be made to other weekend long sc2 events, all of which are free to view in standard quality. I have no idea what MLG were thinking on this one, and it is bound to fail.

Because you seriously think PPV will get more people to watch than free events with advertising ? What's making esport grow the most ? A 5000 viwer PPV event or a 50 000 free event with advertising ?

I feel I have been doing a good job supporting esports this past year and a half, I've purchased tickets for all GSL's apart from the first open season, and I signed up for an MLG silver last year to get the beta streams. I'm not averse to paying for my SC2 however it has to be worth it. For me, someone who has limited time available to watch starcraft, I cannot commit an entire weekend to watch the MLG winter arena and therefore the $20 price point is not worth it to me. I'm paying less than that for a season of GSL, and I really feel I get my money's worth there. Plenty of games over a long period of time. If there was a cheaper option available for the weekend (say $5 for a low quality stream), I'd definitely consider it as I'm sure I'd have some time available over the weekend to catch live games. I'll definitely be tuning into Assembly, but for now I'll say bye to MLG.

MLG is not some cum dripping starlet who wants buzz around her, just to acknowledge her existence.

Maybe on your tv, but don't you think the tv channel payed for the rights to air it? If they're not producing it themselves that is. Of course the TV channel paid for it. Self produced or not the TV channel paid for it. Then the question is who pays the TV channel? Sometimes it is the state, other times in is adds and sponsorship and other times it is PPV. (of course ultimately it will always be the viewer who pays, either in form of tax/time(to view adds)/directly) Now, the problem here isn't so much that it is PPV, I think it is a nice experience to try out and see if it can work (I personally will not buy it because I don't want PPV in SC2, but hey, it is worth a try). The problem however is why they changed to PPV and how. They announced it far to late in my opinion. They should have told us at the same time they announced the tournament, because they should have known by then. I also think it is a stupid Idea to invite and fly over so many professional players to a LAN where there will be no live audience to enjoy it and then expect us viewers to pay for it. If they would scratch the idea to pay for tickets and logging, and thus cut the expenses, I could see myself pay for the tournament (mind that the price would be lower). Of course a lot of the Koreans probably wouldn't be able to make it, but honestly I could care less. Again, to pay for the players to fly in to a LAN with no live audience and expect the viewers to pay for it is bullshit.

gsl is 10$, and you get WAY more than 20 hours and better players. 20$ is just blown out of proportion.

I spend $59.99 on most UFC Events, and those are only 2-3 hours. MLG is giving a bargain here.
