After months of preparation we are finally ready to announce the HEAT Charity – Live from Berlin Tournament in which 4 Players, selected for their skills, looks and passion for the game, will play for their glory and a charity of their choice. It will take place at February 4th, starting at 14:00 CET
None other than Totalbiscuit will commentate on site in Berlin at the CK-99 – The Next Level Lounge, joined by Soe who will be the event's host.
Players and the Charity they support:
Type.Vitriolic ReaL : charity: water Millenium Tarson : Nobody's Children Foundation Grubby: International Fund for Animal Welfare LiquidTLO: myclimate.org
(ReaL replaces Phoenix who decided to participate in next GSL Code A Qualifiers ; ReaL recently participated in the Homestory IV Cup and made it to the Quarterfinals, only narrowly losing 2:3 to later finalist Sound.)
The Tournament will take place in the CK-99 – The Next Level Lounge. It offers a great atmosphere and ideal technical conditions for the players and visitors alike. There will be a different seating than shown on the images to make room for 300 Visitors.
Groupstage: every player plays vs each other in a Best of 3
Playoffs (Best of 5):
4th of Group Stage plays vs 3rd of group Stage Winner of that match plays vs 2nd of group Stage Winner of that match plays vs 1st of group Stage
both players have 2 Vetoes (Bo3) / 1 Veto (Bo5) each. Vetoes will be done blind, and remaining maps will be played in a random order decided at start of each series. (If both player veto same the same map(s) so more than 3/5 remain, the maps to be played will be decided randomly.
Money Distribution: 1st placed charity gets 40% of stream revenue 2nd placed charity gets 30% of stream revenue 3rd placed charity gets 20% of stream revenue 4th placed charity gets 10% of stream revenue
After the main tournament there will be fun games played as long as the players want to. For example games against the audience with ever increasing real life handicaps (eyepatch, 2 fingers taped together, mirrored display, etc.). Maybe some 2vs2 or 4vs4. We are open to suggestions from you, this is the part where we can go a bit crazy.
We try to keep the expenses as low as possible but there is some costs which you can’t avoid even if everyone organising it is doing it for free. This is mostly travel expenses for the Players and Casters and equipment rental, so parts of the sponsorship money and entrance ticket revenue will be used to cover those expenses, anything which is left will be also distributed accordingly.
For donations of viewers we will provide the option to have them donate to their favourite charity instead of spreading it, as some might only like 1 or 2 charities. We are still considering different options on how to handle donations but we will find a solution which is 100% transparent and has lowest possible transaction costs.
A free HD (720p) Stream
A high quality production
Non-stop Starcraft action
2 Ingame observers allowing us to show Picture in Picture and Split Screen in appropriate situations (don’t worry we will use that only when it really makes sense and not to show off that we can do it)
A small surprise (really would like to announce it already but it just isn’t in a state yet where we can do it; lets just say it’s something nobody else did before, just a small thing though)
Overall a fun event in a lighthearted atmosphere right before the serious European tournament season really starts with Assembly Winter later in February
Special Thanks go to Totalbiscuit for his support as well as Soe and Mori and the Freaks 4U Gaming GmbH for their collaboration at no charge to help the HEAT – Event to raise money for Charities.
I also owe everyone who is helping me to make this event a success my gratitude.
Hm a live charity event seems pretty cool. I hope Soe sticks to hosting though, because unless she has sick good chemistry with TB, the cast is gonna be awkward.
sweet...will be there and enjoying this for sure thank so so much for this...and for the good thoughts behind it..not only making neards happy but also those who are in need !!
Looking forward to visiting Germany again big fan of any country that puts curry on their sausages and I can reach without having to get on one of those blasted aeroplane contraptions.

It'll be fine, we can talk about how silly WoW PvP is.
Am I the only one that thought that this was somehow going to involve the Miami Heat. I was like, " Wow L. James and D. Wade playing Starcraft. No, this has to be in the wrong section". Guess I was wrong both ways .
Awesome. For Charity! Personally I feel there are more "worthy" charities out there, but everthing helps and in the end does something good. So I will happily support it with my add-viewery.
This thread deserves more attention, when players do things like this if the community supports it whole heartedly it creates wonderful publicity for SC2 as a whole. Also, go Grubby!
Phoenix decided to stay in Korea to participate in next Code A Qualifiers. He will be replaced by his teammate Type.Vitriolic ReaL who recently showed a very good performance at Homestory IV Cup. I apologize to all Phoenix fans and wish him best luck in the qualifiers.

Get on this level everyone. This has the potential to be amazing.
It’s a good thing to empathise with people which don’t have the same chances as we have. It’s very important to keep their miseries in mind and to WANT to do something against it. And these guys here DO something. Those commendable people really should be encouraged in any possible cases.
I really like the map pool on this one. Other than that I'm really looking forward to seeing how well the whole observer splitscreen system will unfold!

One assumes the venue has to be paid for, equipment hire and so forth too.
No they aren't paying me, before you ask, I doubt anyone's getting paid for this.

Glossing over this in the tournament information bothers me.
You can expect [...] a small surprise (really would like to announce it already but it just isn’t in a state yet where we can do it; lets just say it’s something nobody else did before, just a small thing though)
[–]primadog 2 points 15 minutes ago So the entry fees do not contribute to the charity effort?
Cyanide_kcn[S] 1 point 2 minutes ago afaik it is to pay the location, the staff isn't paid at all, so don't worry. Even TB flies in on his own. The whole stream revenue as well as the sponsor's money will go towards charity
I have a problem with the way this charity event is set up. In fact, I have three:
The entry fee from the live audience does not contribute to the charity effort, and the event information did not spell this out explicitly. This may mislead some community members to thinking they're contributing to the fund raising efforts when purchasing the tickets.
Unlike most StarCraft 2 fundraisers, this event has a cost overhead, paid for using the fund raised. However, this charity event did not has an explicit breakdown of the said overhead. While we the Community generally don't generally expect a cost breakdown for every tournament, it's the onus of a fundraising organizer to reassure our philanthropy are not wasted.
If it's possible that majority of the money the Community spent on a charity event does not actually reach charities, can the event honestly advertise itself as a "charity event"?
All it takes is one screw up for our community to turn against charitable efforts in its entirety. I hope the organizers would clarify and reconsider how they plan this event out.

I appreciate your concerns but we mention what we do with the entrance tickets explicitly in the announcement:

So yes unlike an online stream there is more overhead but about unlike what you claim we communicate them very transparently.

Will you and the event organizers commit to a public listing of all costs, expense and revenue, of this event? Will you and the event organizers commit to donate all proceeds, excess of the costs and overhead, to charities outlined?
I cannot recall a single charity event in StarCraft 2 scene with such significant listed overhead costs. It's up to you to demonstrate to the Community that this format is a better, more efficient form for charitable fundraising, in comparison to the traditional online charity drive. Failure to do so will only discredit your efforts.
Will you and the event organizers commit to donate all proceeds, excess of the costs and overhead, to charities outlined?
yes I think we stated that clearly enough in the opening post already that we take nothing for ourselves and everyone working for the event is doing it voluntarily, aside from the casters and players even paying for their own travel costs.
Will you and the event organizers commit to a public listing of all costs, expense and revenue, of this event?
We will release the amount of revenue of the stream, we will also release the amount of leftovers of sponsoring and ticket sales after expenses. For those charities / donation methods where it is not possible to get live stats (i.e. which have no online fundraiser tool like charity: water) we will release the amounts donated as soon as possible.
I cannot recall a single charity event in StarCraft 2 scene with such significant listed overhead costs. It's up to you to demonstrate to the Community that this format is a better, more efficient form for charitable fundraising, in comparison to a regular, online charity drive. Failure to do so will only discredit your efforts.
Okay there is overhead costs. Now if we compare an online stream to an live event, what is the revenue model of an online charity fundraiser?
It is the revenue generated by the stream advertisements + viewer donations.
Now if you read our thread carefully you will have noticed that we don't touch those things for the overhead costs so like in an online stream we have 100% efficiency in those parts. And with the higher production values possible with a live event we might attract more viewers than an online stream.
Now on top of that we also have sponsorship money (which in our case we wouldn't have for an online event) and the entrance tickets, which as we stated from the beginning will be used to cover the unavoidable expenses but the remains are a plus compared to an online event. (Unless you make the faulty assumption that everyone buying a ticket would have donated even a fraction of that in average when it had been a online streaming event.)
I am sorry if my concerns had appear combative or slanderous. I have no personal problem with CK-99 or the event organizers there. I am a fan of TLO and TBO, and aware that CK-99 is the venue for one of the first BarCrafts in EU. I appreciate what you guys have done in the past for the European scene.
This event utilizes limited Community resources in the name of charity. You guys are trying a new charity drive format foreign to our scene. While innovation is good, it's up to you to prove to us, your audience and contributors, that this format works better in a non-combative way. If I have question marks over why the overhead is necessary and where the money goes, others will too, and addressing the concerns will improve your event's chance of success.
We at the CK-99, are next to ReGame.tv one of the main sponsors for the event. We will provide all needed PCs for the Players, Casters and we even bought an absolutely new one for production purposes. In addition to that, additional personel is needed (6 hours early compared to the usual time, people to dont work for free) and we have to close down the venue for the public that whole day, not to mention all costs for power etc.
I will not give out specific numbers, but I can tell you that is a lot of money and time everybody is putting in to make this event a success.
I organized the Battle in Berlin 2011 and I can tell you one thing. Getting all this stuff I just mentioned costs shittons of money and everything will be provided for free so the organizers of the HEAT Charity tournament do have so little costs to worry about.
So before going all hostile on them I would kindly suggest to give them the benefit of the doubt
On a personal note (which is my own personal opinion): Even if this event generates only as much as 10$ it will already be a success. Saying "but you could have done way more if you just had ..." is not really the important thing. Was there ever a combination of a Starcraft 2 Charity event a offline location?
i have three spare tickets to the heat event. unfortunately me and my friends cant make it, so if anyone of you wants to participate in that event and is still looking for tickets: just pm me!
Real's charity is water? xD I find that hilarious for whatever reason. Water is nice and everything but I'm not sure if throwing money into the water will do anything but destroy the money. =(

Think Africa. Its not like they all have water by just turning the cap. ReaL charity is funding digging up wells for those remote locations. (If i'm getting this right)
who will be the caster the audience hears on site? i thought Totalbiscuit but now im worried its gonna be in German. Yeah Im German but I really dont like German casts .. in any case ill come anyway
Real and Grubyy are winning the contest for best charity, in my opinion, so I'll be rooting for them. And obviously, this is purely an opinion of mine.

This event is gna be absolutely awesome! Starcraft + Charity fundraising = win! Also really excited to see TLO own this one GOGO! And REALLY looking forward to seeing Soe back on the SC2 scene <3 You know that lovely young lady and TB gna make this an event to remember!
@ Endrey: was the on-site-sale-thing referring to the event on sunday? Or to the showmatch? Because I'd love to drop by but can't be certain wether I can make it or not T,T

Indeed. Trimmed beard and a shorter hairstyle like that looks so much better than it is now, hehe.
Anyways, looking forward to attending HEAT at CK-99 tomorrow. Aurel (and Marco?), you guys really did a great job in preparing all that. Well done! See ya guys there!
Maybe I just got it completely wrong... I thought there'd be a free stream for this tournament. Was the Url to watch it mentioned anywhere ? Or will only the people at CK-99 be able to watch it ?
I'm sure there'll be VODs. That's what they said on site. Even though the TBO stream had no audio, I hope all the audio from TotalBiscuit casting and Soe interviewing players properly got captured.
Despite the technical problems, shoutout to the entire crew -- Aurel, Marco, Schlumpfine, Heat Map Guy, and everyone else I'm forgetting now -- you did a good job! I sat there with them at the production computers for quite a while and taught Schlumpfine how to properly update scores in the LR thread, haha. Also heads up to TotalBiscuit for keeping casting despite the problems and only having one pizza in between (shoulda brought you a Currywurst haha) and to Special Endrey for impromptu casting the games in English from a freezing office.
There also some small words by Totalbiscuit and an Interview with TaKe and TLO included and some random people in the backround. those are not the offical vods tho
For those that I haven't yet spammed this at, StarGraphed was tested and was shown to work. Further work will commence on this for map makers and casters alike!
