What you're talking about is the view of people who are not into e-sports. You watch sc2, you know that they don't look like that, yet you made this thread; interesting. I have no need for JinrO to be posing nude holding some trophy, I want to see him win, nothing else.

This thread went downhill after the first reply :-/
IMO it's fine, we have people talking how western progamers suck at managing their training schedule, no need to burden with shopping and styling on top of that, yet :D

but the foreigner vision is closer to the truth

When there's enough money in the scene they can pay people to do it for them. And the ones that do work on their appearance still perform well...it's not like they can't be good looking and be good at SC2.

To be fair, that first post set the bar unreasonably high.

IMO, those 'sexy' shots of pro-gamers are ridiculously funny. Computer games + Sex Appeal, it's a hard concept to throw together without it looking/feeling completely unnatural.
SC2 progamers posing like tough guys showing me their muscles... is straight up odd. Yea it appeals to chicks, and I guess the more chicks that are into esprots helps the scene, but eh... very weird. Need to have the 'cool' factor something everyone can relate to, sex appeal doesn't convince me these people are cool, convinces me they are into modeling more than games.

The western idea of hardcore gamers being unnatractive and unhealthy is true for the most part! Likely the reason why there are so few female fans in the foreigner scene compared to the asian scene.
you hit the nail on the head with this point. maybe this is just me having a similar opinion (as opposed to it being a fact), but whenever i bring up the fact that i'm into pro-gaming i get some confused looks. no one takes me for a nerd, meanwhile i enjoy anime and pro-starcraft as well as going 11/12 heroic ICC before quitting. no one expects that from me because i defy the traditional western view of a nerd.
"sick brag, bro"
thanks, man. but i bring that up because that example is a clear instance of misunderstanding of what it means to be into video games. with the rise of games like call of duty attracting a cult following, it should be understood that not everyone thats REALLY into the scene is unattractive. its sold multi-million copies - youre trying to tell me they were all to unattractive, fat, unhealthy, middle-aged adults living with their parents? no freakin way. this image needs to be changed if we're going to break through the misconceptions that have been created through pop-culture like the embedded south park image.
now, to the OP's point - i think a certain amount of sex appeal would be a good idea to include to attract female viewers. we already have the male demographic covered with our lovely hostesses. i wouldn't mind seeing demuslim scantily clad on the cover of a magazine. even idra has grown out of his nerdy looks since he hit the gym. huk is quite handsome as well. and how could i forget tasteless!! (i even remember his gf tweeting that she got him to lose some weight as well so im sure he's looking extra nice lately).
do i have any advice for how? other than photoshoots, no. im not into PR or business or advertising or that sort of thing - im just a teacher haha. i just know that i would like to see these common misconceptions gone and to not get funny looks when my zerg necklace falls out of my shirt and i explain what it is. no matter how "above average" you look, it still knocks you down a couple points (at least in my experience).
PS: i might be a little biased because i write this since i want an esports wife-u. i would love an asian, however they only seem to be into other asians mainly . lets make this happen plz

This is Invalid because apollo and tyler are not in the top 5

This is pretty serious. I hope the high command of E-Sports take notice of this. It is somewhat in effect in some western pro-players like jinro, huk, idra, and naniwa. And in Sports in general, the best players take care of themselves, they work out, and get well dressed. They take good care of their looks in general.
|
Wait, crazy idea: Let's foster a stronger desire amongst fans for great games, in-depth player personalities, and excitng commentary, you know, game-related stuff, rather than substituting it with psuedo-content.

I tried to up vote naniwa's comment.

You're a mainstream person you just watch on TV/internet whatever the f you want. What's gonna be better? Good looking people get more exposure, get more attention and the average derp/derpette approves of good looking people rather then under average looking. Ofcourse this is regardless of what you think of the actual game we're only looking at how people are perceived.
I don't think it can ever be a bad thing to improve your looks. Maybe you can't really compare people who play regular sports to e-athletes but still it can't be a bad thing.
Of course this is true.
I don't think there can be any rules or regulations but every pro gamer must have enough brains to figure for himself that the better he (or she) looks the better he will be perceived by the community and the more popular he will become. Obviously looks alone won't cut it, but it's a welcome addition.

Apollo is above Lz in the forgeigner list but in the top 5 overall Lzgamer is ranked 5th and Apollo is not even on the list. LOL

First, regular sports require you to be healthy, because if you're not healthy, you can't play. You'd never turn pro if you weren't fit.
Second, there are plenty of ugly pro sports players. Get the defensive line of any football (American) team up on stage. These people are not hired for their looks.
Third, most people when playing their games look ugly as hell. The glamor shots of pro sports players are not taken during play. Most players do not apply makeup and so forth when going onto the field, as sweat would make short work of that.
I don't see this as a problem that needs to be solved. There are some nice-looking pro-gamers outside of Korea. And there are some not-so-nice-looking ones. Just let the players play. E-sports should grow on the merrit of its players; to grow on something else (like their attractiveness) does a disservice to the game itself.
Would you really want e-sports to make it big because the players are hot? Or because people actually like the game and level of competition?
