I actually think this is an important topic - sex appeal is a MASSIVE marketing tool. For eSports in general to get bigger, it requires money for both the event and also the players. Most major sports stars earn a large chunk of cash from endorsements - naturally, companies will prefer an attractive player to an unattractive player on the side of their box.

Earlier in the thread, someone said how its not important for eSports to be "sexy and cool". I completely disagree. In a world where social media plays a huge part in any form of advertising the key to getting things "shared" is to have people think they are cool. Sharing a football or basketball story is socially fine, due to public opinion on the matter; eSports not so much due to the opinion of players being sterotypical "nerds" - something people don't necessarily want to be associated with.

There is also the aspect of "Sport" - there are benefits to being in good physical condition regardless if its just your fingers or your whole body engaged in activity. This again is an area where eSports can easily take some stick purely from trying to be classed as a sport (rightfully so). If the icon of a "Sport" is overweight and clearly not putting effort into their appearance, it is not exactly something people want to aspire to become when compared to say David Beckham.

I wouldn't say that most western progamers look bad. It's not exactly a priority for a lot of our pro's, and i'm sure that a lot of western players don't have as good an exercise regime as most koreans do. There really aren't that many excessively unhealthy looking people in Starcraft, western or korean. I could think of maybe two players i've seen that are overweight, and I really don't think very many players look downright ugly. I'm sure most would agree.

The vast majority of professionals, be it korean or western, know that being healthy is immensely important to performing your best at StarCraft, despite the fact that superficially, there isn't much physical labour involved. I suppose I could agree that how the western world views gamers as a whole is a lot more unhealthy and stereotypical than the way Koreans view them.

What makes you think there will be "a bunch of hot girls getting incredibly randy around you" if a couple pro gamers go jogging some more? You are probably the kind of nerd who screams "OMG SHE'S SO HOT" every time you see any girl affiliated with a video game.

Looking better isn't only good for girls, better looking people get more exposure then ugly people. So look at the bigger picture. You're most likely not gonna become world ESPORT stars looking like the south park guy in the OP.

Name 5 western progamers who are overweight. What's that, you can only name one or two? Oh, so this entire thread is retarded? Thought so.

Tell me where the OP mentioned being overweight. What's that, you can't? Oh, so your post clearly missed the point of the thread? Thought so.

He said style, and I think what he meant was changing the STEREOTYPE that gamers are ugly and unfit and have no style. We have plenty of handsome SC2 players. They just aren't really mentioned as being as such or advertised in such a way.

Well let's see. He posted a cartoon of an overweight gamer, contrasted western progamers with "active and healthy looking" Koreans (who stick to an exercise regimen), referred to westerners as being "unnatractive and unhealthy," and raised the question whether there should be an effort to improve western progamers' appearance. If you think weight isn't implied in any of that, and that it's only referring to stereotypes of gamers in general (rather than the appearance of progamers in particular), you're not smart. What aspect of western progamers' appearance does the OP want to improve besides weight? Their tan and maybe put some gel in their hair? Or nose jobs maybe?

/thread

So, there is something wrong with the OP suggesting that the players improve their health and physical appearance, not only for themselves, but for the overall image of progamers? I don't understand what your issue is. Being overweight is unhealthy, that's a fact, not some mean opinion. Everyone could stand to exercise more and eat better. Our sick culture has made it a huge taboo to say anything negative about fat, but the fact is being really fat isn't healthy, nor does it look good to most people.

My point is that there's nothing much to be improved. Only 4 overweight progamers have been mentioned in this thread and I can't think of any more. There's no need to make a thread about a negligible percentage of the western progamer population.

The fact that you can only think of four makes me think you aren't that familiar with the roster of progamers...or you have a very loose definition of "overweight."

You may be thinking of Koreans. We're talking about western progamers here.

No no, I'm thinking of Westerners. And outside of weight there are still things that they can do to improve how they look. Style, hair, skin...and all that shows up. I mean, look at the progamers we think are hot. They are actually REALLY hot. We could stick a lot of them on magazine covers ezpz.

On the other side, the hotter Demuslim, the uglier you seem in compared to him.

I'm fairly sure nobody is going to deny your 5 consecutive Starleague victories because you're ugly. And I'm fairly sure also that would suffice to make you a star in the gaming world.

I almost forgot to thank the OP for giving me the occasion to take this wonderful picture : [image loading] . Definitely going in the funny pics thread right now.

Let's look at it this way:

Regular sports have healthy looking people with good looks in general

For e-athletes I think we can objectively say that they aren't as good looking

You're a mainstream person you just watch on TV/internet whatever the f you want. What's gonna be better? Good looking people get more exposure, get more attention and the average derp/derpette approves of good looking people rather then under average looking. Ofcourse this is regardless of what you think of the actual game we're only looking at how people are perceived.

I don't think it can ever be a bad thing to improve your looks. Maybe you can't really compare people who play regular sports to e-athletes but still it can't be a bad thing.

The problem isn't that they don't look good as much as it is that they are perceived as not looking good. Even if 95% of them are fairly attractive, current media is so biased against gaming (at least in the US) that they'll seek out the 5% that don't look so great and try to paint us all that way.

Shame I'm not a pro-gamer. I'd have fan girls ^_-

on a serious note, I think now with Esports growing the important thing soon here is to start marketing campaigns. There aren't too many girl gamers but our best target population to attract more players and spectators (aka grow) is to appeal to the gamer community.

Look how big gamers are becoming. When Skyrim came out every girl I talked to even knew about it. It sold over 7 million copies in the first week, and earlier this month its up to 10 million. Steam also said it was the fastest selling game on their platform. I don't think there was a single gamer who didn't hear about Skyrim. WoW has over 10 million gamers and spread throughout many age groups. Gamers are becoming far less stigmatized and closer and closer to the norm as we move into the future.

What if every gamer knew about Esports?

I think like any other sport, there are going to be hot guys/girl and not hot guys/girls. The articles and magazines will be selective and find one of the hot guys to be on the cover. What I'm saying is there are attractive people and unattractive people everywhere. The unattractive and mediocre gamers might not get those modeling contracts for the front page of "GAMER MAGAZINE" or w/e but they'll find an attractive guy for that and all will be well.

TL;DR attractiveness will come once magazines/ the world knows about us. They'll be selective and just choose the hot gamers like any other sport. Let's market Esports to gamer communities!

The reason korea is like that is because they are extremely focused on looks. Saying that most foreign pros are unhealthy seems like bs as most of them look like your average 20-25 year old. Some are overweight but it's not a majority.

I agree with this. The teams want to attract the fans as much as possible. That is why during the early days of bw players like boxer and oov would wear these ridiculous outfits. They wanted to attract fans.

yeah I agree, It can't be a bad thing, but at the same time are we trying to appeal to those consumers who are 30+ sitting on their couch watching TV shows like CSI where all the cops are models ? (lol) I think not. Esports should be appealing to the gamer community. I don't see the gamer community into looks nearly as much, especially since it's mostly dudes. We don't really care how hot that other gamer dude is lol. Also, the game itself (SC2) never/rarely involves the actual player if you're just watching the game. Yeah maybe after a basketball game they'll interview the player just like in SC2, but unlike basketball, during the actual game you never really see the player.

my 2 cents
