Anyone have any idea what are the more reliable/popular headphones used for gaming and casting?

I know there are a couple of brands like SteelSeries and Razer that seem to be really popular amongst players. I'd like to know if you guys have any opinion about these stuff.

-edit-

My budget is ~$200

Ask in the Headphone thread in the Tech forum, but from personal experience, Sennheiser and Audiotehnica are really good mid tier headphones, a lot of my friends also have the steelseries white one

I'm not sure why you'd bring up Steelseries and Razer, since they make headsets not headphones. (except for the Orca maybe).

If you're planning to invest in casting equipment, I'd suggest buying headphones with a separate mic for clearer sound. With headsets you kinda of get a half-ass of both mic/headphones. I don't know much about good quality mics, but I'm pretty satisfied with my Audio Technica ATH m50's.

But then again, if you just want to try out casting for a while, you might be better off with just a headset.

I actually sold my Steelseries Siberia v2 headset as I found in uncomfortable due to clamping. I wish I had a way to adjust the headband length.

Actually I do record my guitar and vocals, but I find that whole set up to be really clunky when it comes to recording commentary. The whole gotta set up my FireStudio, get good mic placement on my M Audio Nova etc etc kind of feels like being in the studio again except that all I want to do is talk about Starcraft lol.

Yep, it's an awesome headset and it's most definitely worth it's price.

I definitely would never buy a headset. You can get a better mic and better headphones for the same price. Check out the headphone enthusiast thread here on TL.

Whatever you do though don't buy a razer headset. I have used them all at a local lan center and they all sound horrible and are not especially comfortable either.

You can find a set of Logitech G35 very cheap on E-bay. I picked myself up a pair. From what I understand; headphones are most commonly used by casters, however, if you plan to do casting in your room, a Blue Snowball Mic could work for you. Otherwise, you need headphones that isolate the sound around your ears, if you plan to cast in large public areas.

Not true at all.

Check out the Turtle Beach PX21/DPX21 setup and you'll learn very differently. They have the sound quality in both gaming and music playback of $200 earbuds/headphones, with AMAZING bass response (dare you to compare the DPX21's to beats and bose price to performance and chose them over the DPX21's).

Also, the mic on them has some really high grade technology in it, and will make it sound like you're in the room next to the person you're talking to on their end.
The mic also has some pretty kick ass noise cancelation tech in it too I've learned, which can help alot when you have annoying pets or people in the background while you're trying to talk.

So if you want a budged headphone/mic that'll work really well, then the straight up PX21's will still beat any price for quality matches you'll find on both items combined with ease, as even the PX21's alone rival things like monster beats and $150 bose headphones, without their DSS addition.

You also won't find a headset or headphone with the same bass response btw for under $200 that don't completely sac their mids/highs/clarity to gain that same bass response.

...I've tried almost everything out there under $400 btw, lol. I wouldn't boast these things like this if they wern't worth it. :>

This however, is true. Razer makes the WORST sounding headsets/headphones you'll ever find for their price range. They sound like they're made for the sole purpose of spewing garbage into your ear lobes. :<

*edit*
The PX21's/DPX21's also configure nice and easily with FMLE/VAC and/or XSplit btw

I have experience with Blue mics - I know Day[9] uses it in his casts but I am a little hesitant to use a condenser mic because of the amount of noise they pick up from everything. My M-Audio Nova picks up bird chirping, people talking from the ground floor (I stay on the 10th floor) and it generally becomes a pain in the ass to isolate my voice from the surrounding noise. I do some audio recording (both for money and leisure) and usually the issue with most recordings I have is ambient noise. It's hard to get a good take without having random chair noise, feet noise, air conditioning noise, foot steps etc etc.

The reason why I asked for a head set mic in the first place is that most head set mics are uni directional and they only pick up sound generally from only one direction (the player's mouth). Sure, you'll sacrifice a little on audio quality here and there, but at least one problem with the ambient noise is solved. I don't know - maybe I need more input from people who have used these headsets....

go audiophile, never go back
go headset, forever lazy : (

i don't really believe in having multiple headphones of the same sort of build, especially when it comes to headsets
you might want something closed and flat, or you might want something that is open-air and has good noise-cancelling for the mic. it is up to your own preference IMO, and you have so many choices.

many players are not necessarily audio-freaks and just want something that won't strain them over hours of wearing and moving around; i can imagine they also want something that is very comparable to the ones typically used at a LAN or major event. so basically, the comfort and overall feel are also a more common issue..

casting in a crowded environment, and casting at home---two cases which are both fairly different.

I use headphones that are good for music, since they are pretty good for games anyway. I've never bought in to Gaming headphones... so I use an AudioTechnica ATH-A700 with a Zalman Clip-On Mic if I need to talk over vent/mumble/skype. It's great .

If you're looking for audio quality, don't buy a gaming headset. Steel Series and Razer aren't popular because they're good, they're just sponsoring almost every team and a lot of tournaments, that's why you see them all the time. They produce decent headsets but I wouldn't use those for anything that has to do with recording.

Plantronics makes the best affordable headsets in terms of mic quality. Other brands of gaming headsets will likely give you better audio quality, but for voice, Plantronics is your best bet. You didn't state your budget though.

Problem with them is the really really weak bass. It's due to the design of the headset and changing the EQs won't fix it. The only fix is to take off the ear cups and drill some holes into the headset and put the ear cups back on. Then its a pretty good headset. But doing the fix will cause a void in your warrenty.

How do I know? I'm using one

If you have the money, look at

http://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/shop/hah/headphones-and-headsets/gaming/mmx-300.html

Literally the best 'headset' type thing that I've seen for a reasonable price. The mic quality is excellent and the cans are great for the price.

The headsets for GSL are Senn HD25-IIs with mics added on.

This is what I do but I use a pair of Senn HD555s instead. Costed me something like $90 overall off Amazon for headphones and mic and it sounds great for games and decent for music too. It will always be better to go for good headphones+mic but most people just want the easy solution that is combined into one (and way more expensive).

I would suggest a pair of sennheiser pc350s. Then once you get them, take the earpieces apart and remove the piece of foam that they put over the driver to make it sound worse than the 360s. Both the 350 and the 360 use the same driver.

The steelseries v2 is not a very good headset for the price. Everyone calls it comfy put to me it fits loosely and the sound quality isn't very great. The whole headset feels very cheap. I would highly recommend sennheisers. High quality sound, great fit, and very durable. I've been using the HD 280 for DJ/studio work for almost 3 years and they're still great. You can find them on amazon for around $80. If you're looking into casting, I'd recommend you get headphones and a mic that are separate.

Don't get Creative... I have had two different headsets from them:

Fatality and Tactic Sigma.

Both the mics fail hard. Go with a DJ Headset and a snowball microphone. That is your best option. I am in the same boat as you, looking for a new headset. This is the mic I recommend: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EOPQ7E/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I don't want a mic on mine because I want to be able to use them with my iPhone, so I went with Sony MDR-XB500s. Really good sound quality, and because they aren't noise canceling, I feel like the sound quality is better because of the fact that the actual speakers inside of them are bigger and better. But what do i know, I just like extra bass and universal ability to utilize costly hardware :D :D

Hmm, thanks for the suggestions guys =) keep em coming!

I decided to try out a couple of other options in the mean time to see which one gives a better setup: AKG headphones together with a couple of AT mics, got a Blue bird and a Zoom H4N. I have also been checking out the Blue Snowball and it seems to have a few mic direction settings (mainly cardioid and omni directional) which could solve the noise issue. Might pick one up from a local store next week or the week after when I'm done testing the other set ups =)

I use ATH-M50 and a Zalman clip-on. The mic costs like $10 but has the best sound quality out of any headset I've ever tried. Btw, to the guy preaching Turtles, please don't compare cost-efficiency to Bose/Beats LOL.
