Now, instead of "pool play" or being kept in there forever, you are "invited" to "qualifiers."
In other words, there are no qualifiers to actually qualify for these events. You are invited. How does this change anything from 2011 in terms of making it so the same players don't show up?
Apparently the "invites" to the TOURNAMENT (not qualifiers) are people that already are popular players/tournament players that have had the money to travel to events previously or are already very known.
So basically, MLG replaced the pool "elite" with an even worse system where they are literally picking who they want in their tournament with an invite system.
...
Is this serious? Yes, there is still an open bracket...but none of those players will have an opportunity to have a paid trip/hotel like the auto-invited already popular elite players...
If they are going to bastardize their tournament even more, they need to stop calling them qualifiers because they aren't qualifiers - they are a completely 100% invite tournament, which is ridiculous.
This is what I'm thinking to a tea. I think its a awful system unless you are already a popular/elite player

It does say you can play in any, but they only give you $400 for airfare. As your based out of the US that should be fine. They will still put you up in a hotel.

yea basically there was 5 mini events and 1 main event anyone can play in with the open bracket last year. Now it looks like not known players are getting shit on while people who did well prob mostly koreans last year wil be invited to "QUALIFIERS" that arent qualifiers but invite only tournaments. If they do the open bracket tournaments it looks like at max 4 of those a year. 1 per season

100% agree with this. I honestly can't wrap my head around how they would even dare call this a qualifier when they are hand picking people right from the start. It's a freaking Invite tournament just like the last MLG Invitational where the 3 regions then fed into the Final Tournament at Providence except this is bigger.
The only reason I can think of them wanting to hand select people is because they are afraid of their favorites getting stomped by up and coming no name Koreans. This way they give chances to EXACTLY who they want and only the people they hand select ever have a chance to get their money. This just feels like a complete farce of a tournament format and it might as well be a freaking Reality Show since competition and finding the best player is not a top priority.
The only OPEN or QUALIFIER portion of MLG 2012 is the Open Bracket at their main tournament and even that you are playing against a stacked deck. These guys don't ever want an even playing field. It's astounding.

Yeah, in SotG they just discussed stories which are being helpful towards creating content for further tournaments, i think Trimaster was one of the best stories last MLG season. We won't see anything of that calibre again in 2012 if the qualifiers stick to the 139 invited.
Hmm interesting, I haven't read the entire post but I do like the 32 players being completely covered in terms of flight and hotel and the fact that 1st place is 10k and 2nd place is 6k.

Not true at all, anything that happened out of the open bracket last year will be able to happen this year as well.

Do well in the open bracket, I'm sure you'll get an invite to the qualifier. Its tough, but such is life.

139 is a lot of people though. Maybe they will add more after this backlash.

yea but with how tournies in 2011 went like 100/139 of those people will be like korean invites hah unless its split evenly

This is basically just an event to determine seeding for the big event with a little prize pool to compensate. The "real" mlg event in columbus will allow those stories from open bracket and in fact the open bracket will probably be easy since the top16 are in pool play and the other 16 are in OWR5 so the people who go in open bracket from not arena wont be meeting the monsters in first 5 rounds.
Well since invites of 139 people are based on 2011 performance, people who rise to stardom in 2012 will not be invited to MLG.
Can anyone guarantee me that a currently noname Korean will not win a GSL in 2012? I honestly don't think so.
Also, can people attend multiple qualifiers? If so, I think we are going to see a disproportionate number of Koreans in the finals, because a lot of Koreans will also qualify from EU and NA qualifiers, whereas no foreigners will qualify from KR qualifiers. I don't think this is bad, but I know a lot of people do. I think we are looking at 20+ Korean players out of 32 here.
I don't understand why there needs to be an invite list to the qualifier in the first place. Just make it truly open and let the best rise to the top and win the spots.
The invites for the qualifiers is only to determine the pool play. The MLG Winter Championship will be like any other MLG... there wil be 16 people in pool play, and an Open Bracket... so effectively it doesn't change anything. All that it does is gives like FIVE tournaments per season, rather than 5 tournaments per year,.
Assuming you are good enough to compete in the Arena, which is what the qualifiers are for, you will be invited. I would say it would be pretty impossible to find a player who hasn't been invited who would be good enough to qualify for that Arena spot. The qualifier for the Arena is only to determine the Pool play spots for the main championship anyway. There is still a massive live event for the main championship where the players who weren't invited can play if they want, they will just be in the open bracket. They may be scared of the Code B Koreans that will join the open qualifiers and most likely knock out most of the players if it was truly open to everybody, and this definitely feels very controlled and I don't really like it; it doesn't feel very fair. However I love the fact there will be more tournaments, the Arena idea is excellent and MLG split into seasons feels like a very good move.

It's awesome oo! I love the format.
It isn't exactly the same. Seeds 17-32 also get placed towards the end of the Open bracket allowing for even more players to be fast forwarded through than before. http://i.imgur.com/IZ55q.png
