The current invite format for the online qualifiers is set up due to the compressed timeframe from announcement to the first Pro-Circuit event. That doesn't mean they'll be invite only for the rest of the Seasons this year. Stay tuned for those details.
Second, to the folks talking about prize money, the announced Prize Money is for the Arena events only, which are a completely NEW event that didn't exist last year in MLG's structure. It does NOT include the Pro-Circuit Championships for each season (which is what you all watched last year at Anaheim, Columbus, Providence, etc). Those details will be announced shortly as well.
Edit: Also keep in mind that we're funding travel 32 + 16 = 48 times for players from all over the world. That is NOT a trivial amount of funding. And each player is getting booked a room to themselves for the Winter Season, so if teammates want to stack up in a room, they can do that. I hope that's viewed as the gesture of support to the teams that it's meant to be. Even the more successful teams will not be carrying the weight on their sponsorship budgets for that travel. EG, for example, has two players in the top 8 from Providence (Huk and Idra), so that's quite a bit of support just to them. In addition, if you're an unaffiliated player and qualify in, you don't need to provide that support or get it from someplace else.
Edit 2: "stay tuned" and "shortly" are vague deliberately. Sorry folks, but there is a timeline here and it's not just because we're trying to hype the hype. There's reasons for this (and deals, and commitments to partners) which we have to finalize before can share them all. And no, i can't tell you what the reasons are :D
Edit 3: (sorry for the wall of text now) The Pro-Circuit events STILL HAVE AN OPEN BRACKET. Anyone can register and play in those. The Online Quali's > Arena are for placement into the Championship Pools at the Pro Circuit Championship.
Edit 4: No spectators in the venue because we don't have room. It's a studio shoot.

First Details about the MLG 2012 Pro Circuit!
It’s time! 2012 is here! It seems like just yesterday that Leenock was hoisting the trophy and big check at the 2011 MLG National Championships in Providence. We hope the off-season has been a time of productivity for you, but unfortunately – that’s all about to change. The first details on the 2012 MLG Pro Circuit are below. It’s not everything (we’ve gotta save some juicy details for Sundance to spill on Twitter) but it’s the first reveal of the new 2012 Pro Circuit.
StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty Returns to the Pro Circuit
Blizzard’s hit RTS StarCraft 2 is back for the 2012 Pro Circuit. Shocking, we know. Additional games and details will be announced as soon as possible.
A Well-Seasoned Experience
MLG fans of old will notice things in 2012 are going to be a little… different. The 2012 MLG Pro Circuit will be made up of four distinct Seasons, each with their own Live Championship Event. We wanted to move to a season-based Pro Circuit for a couple of reasons. First, it allows us to make changes to our format and game lineup easily throughout the year. Second, it enables us to maintain a steady stream of competition throughout the year for our players and fans to enjoy. Finally, it helps to ensure that the best of the best are winning prizes on the Pro Circuit, and that every player has a chance to make it big. While we’re not ready to reveal everything about our season structure for the entire year, here’s what we can tell you (WARNING: information overload ahead).
Winter 2012 Season
138 of the best SC2 players in the world (based on the results of all notable 2011 SC2 competitions) will be invited to compete in their choice of three regional double-elimination online tournaments (North America, Europe, and Korea/Taiwan). Competition dates are as follows:
January 31-February 2 (Europe)
February 3-5 (Korea/Taiwan)
February 6-8 (North America)
Details on MLG’s video coverage of the regional online tournaments will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Top 8 finishers from MLG’s 2011 National Championship in Providence will be invited to join the Top 8 finishers from each regional online tournament (24 total players) for the MLG Winter Arena in New York City on February 24-26.
All 32 players will receive all-expenses-paid trips to the MLG Winter Arena, where a $26,000 prize pool will be up for grabs. The full prize breakdown is as follows:
1st – $10,000
2nd – $6,000
3rd – $3,600
4th- $2,200
5th/6th – $1,400 (no consolation matches will be played)
7th/8th – $900 (no consolation matches will be played)
While players can choose which of the three regions they wish to compete in, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:
All matches in a specific regional online bracket must be played on that Battle.net region’s server.
Players will only be eligible to receive MLG-paid travel if they request a flight from an airport located in the region they competed in. If a player is not eligible to receive MLG-paid travel, they will instead receive a $400 stipend. All players, regardless of eligibility for paid travel, will receive MLG-paid hotel accommodations.
In addition to the lovely prizes that will be awarded at the Winter Arena, the Top 16 will also receive spots in Pool Play at the Winter Championship. The bottom 16 finishers in the Arena will receive byes into Open Winners Bracket Round 5 at the Winter Championship. Furthermore, the Top 16 finishers at the Winter Arena will also receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Winter Championship. That’s two all-expenses paid trips for 16 of the world’s best players!
The Winter Arena will be live streamed for your viewing pleasure, but there will not be a live spectator component.
The Winter Championship will be a massive, open, live competition in Columbus, Ohio at the Columbus Convention Center on March 23-25. Spectator passes will be available and the Championship will be streamed live. Further details will be released in the coming weeks, including the full tournament format and prizes.
The Top 8 players from the Winter Championship in Columbus will qualify for the MLG Spring Arena.
A Quick Recap
That’s all we can talk about for now, but there are still a lot of details to be released for both the Winter Season and the remainder of the 2012 MLG Pro Circuit. It’s hard not to get excited about 48 all-expenses paid trips for the world’s best StarCraft 2 players, a $26,000 prize pool for a pre-Championship Event, and the return of MLG to the site of one of our most successful events in 2011, Columbus, Ohio. More details in the coming weeks; stay tuned!

A quick comment on event conflicts. The MLG team has been planning the 2012 Pro Circuit season since the Fall of 2011. Unfortunately, our large scale events – such as the Winter Arena and Winter Championship in Columbus, have to be scheduled months and months in advance in order to secure large venues and execute a bracket that will provide a timely lead in to our championship events. We always do our best to avoid conflicts with other industry events, however, it simply wasn’t an option in this case.
This is the case with all event organizers, and unfortunately, by the time any of us (event organizers in general) find out where/when all the other events are, it's often too late to change gears.
Stay tuned for additional 2012 details.

Well, what is curious about this list, is that the majority of the hyperlinks provided to find the product lead directly to Best Buy's online store. Even the StarCraft II hyperlink leads to Best Buy as the place to buy the game instead of directly from Blizzard.
Could this be a sign of Best Buy sponsoring MLG in 2012?

NEW TWEET!
UPDATE!!!
SO as I was just surfing twitter, i came across one of Sundance's recent Twitts:
Could we see MLG going to multiple countries in 2012? 0.o
Now that the 2011 MLG circuit has concluded, let our predictions begin!!! :D

Including Sundance's response:

http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/714956/esports-roundup-with-major-league-gaming-talkabout/?rnd=5312175477
It is safe to conclude that MLG will bring on an extreme improvement and a revolution to eSPORTS in the US and possibly the whole world.
Based on the latest events surrounding MLG, like the development of the following SC2 tournaments online sponsored by MLG and the tools they will use:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=248758
MLG in my eyes could possibly surpass the GSL if it is successful in introducing whatever Sundance is planning for the future.
Now, I have created this thread to reach out to the community and start compiling a list of the possible huge changes and improvements that MLG's Sundance has suggested will arrive in 2012.
My two big predictions are the following:
1. MLG, with its new SC2 ladder system will be able to become the US's GSL counterpart providing 24 live tournaments next year.
2. MLG will open it's own TV channel (yes, a cable channel like G4, Fox, Cnn, etc.) which will provide coverage of eSPORTS 24/7 obviously including programs dedicated to SC2 alone as for Halo (Mostly SC2 for sure ).
What do you guys think?
JP: 360 pc or ps3 for sf4ae?
Sundance: ps3

January 12th, 2012 MLG releases news that SotG and MLG have parted ways, and also, the details about the 2012 season will be revealed with in a week!

We're hard at work finalizing details about 2012–get ready, because you'll be seeing some very major Pro Circuit announcements next week. While setting up the new Season, we've been taking a very close look at our broadcast schedule, and we've decided to shift our focus entirely towards competition coverage. We've also come to believe–and we hope you'll agree–that the greater world of eSports is best served by community-driven journalism, independent of a connection to any particular League. With that in mind, MLG and State of The Game (SotG) have mutually and amicably decided to part ways. JP was first to raise the issue with us, and we agree and back his choice fully. In order for the show to best serve the community, SotG will return to its roots, becoming fully independent once more, and will no longer be broadcast on MLG.tv. Going forward, the live show will air on twitch.tv, and VOD will be posted on JP's YouTube channel. JP will be posting more details on his personal blog soon.
The show will begin airing at its new home on January 19th, at 7pm EST.
Weekly Warfare and the MLG Weekly will continue to air on MLG.tv, along with new shows that will be announced over the next few weeks. Please stay tuned for additional announcements about MLG's new Broadcast Lineup and the 2012 Pro Circuit.

A source within Major League Gaming has disclosed to ESFI World that the company will be canceling many of their online shows. The affected shows include Rod Breslau's "!@#$ Slasher", "StarCraft Report" hosted by Patrick O'Neill and JP McDaniel, Weekly Warfare, Julie's Show and the MLG F.A.Q. It is unknown as to what the future of "State of the Game" is as the source did not disclose if the show's syndication as part of MLG's programming will continue.

SO as I was just surfing twitter, i came across one of Sundance's recent Twitts:
I'm back. India. France. UK. Will make sense next year.
Could we see MLG going to multiple countries in 2012? 0.o
Now that the 2011 MLG circuit has concluded, let our predictions begin!!! :D
OK, so after this announcement:

Including Sundance's response:

And after watching the last minute of this video interview in G4:

It is safe to conclude that MLG will bring on an extreme improvement and a revolution to eSPORTS in the US and possibly the whole world.
Based on the latest events surrounding MLG, like the development of the following SC2 tournaments online sponsored by MLG and the tools they will use:
