The invites for the qualifiers is only to determine the pool play. The MLG Winter Championship will be like any other MLG... there wil be 16 people in pool play, and an Open Bracket... so effectively it doesn't change anything. All that it does is gives like FIVE tournaments per season, rather than 5 tournaments per year,.
It's awesome oo! I love the format.
I think his point was that only those on the invite list for the qualifiers have a chance at a free flight. Whereas everyone else has to fly themselves to play in the open bracket at the main mlg event. Everyone should have a shot at free flights.
"The Winter Arena will be live streamed for your viewing pleasure, but there will not be a live spectator component." So the Winter Arena is the live event on New York, NY. Why is not live spectator component It is probably the only MLG I can attend to cuz of pure luck I will be on NY from de 24 till the other week. And I live outside US and any other country that does Esports events thats a reall bummer for me, besides that sounds really interesting the new format till now
The current invite format for the online qualifiers is set up due to the compressed timeframe from announcement to the first Pro-Circuit event. That doesn't mean they'll be invite only for the rest of the Seasons this year. Stay tuned for those details.
Second, to the folks talking about prize money, the announced Prize Money is for the Arena events only, which are a completely NEW event that didn't exist last year in MLG's structure. It does NOT include the Pro-Circuit Championships for each season (which is what you all watched last year at Anaheim, Columbus, Providence, etc). Those details will be announced shortly as well.
Edit: Also keep in mind that we're funding travel 32 + 16 = 48 times for players from all over the world. That is NOT a trivial amount of funding. And each player is getting booked a room to themselves for the Winter Season, so if teammates want to stack up in a room, they can do that. I hope that's viewed as the gesture of support to the teams that it's meant to be. Even the more successful teams will not be carrying the weight on their sponsorship budgets for that travel. EG, for example, has two players in the top 8 from Providence (Huk and Idra), so that's quite a bit of support just to them. In addition, if you're an unaffiliated player and qualify in, you don't need to provide that support or get it from someplace else.
Edit 2: "stay tuned" and "shortly" are vague deliberately. Sorry folks, but there is a timeline here and it's not just because we're trying to hype the hype. There's reasons for this (and deals, and commitments to partners) which we have to finalize before can share them all. And no, i can't tell you what the reasons are :D
Edit 3: (sorry for the wall of text now) The Pro-Circuit events STILL HAVE AN OPEN BRACKET. Anyone can register and play in those. The Online Quali's > Arena are for placement into the Championship Pools at the Pro Circuit Championship.
Edit 4: No spectators in the venue because we don't have room. It's a studio shoot.

Does "stay tuned" have an approximate ETA? Can we assume future online qualifiers will not be strictly invite-only? Thanks, Lee!
What in the hell ? T_____T Why bring them to New York if there's no live spectators as part of the event? New York never gets anything but a small IEM stage at Comic Con :[

Good to hear, a pure invite-only online qualifiers isn't what everyone wants, hope it's more open past the first.

Why should everyone have a shot at the free flight? Can someone explain that to me? Why should they have to organize a 512 or 1024 person bracket when realistically there are 40-50 people in that bracket that can/should win. It is still a business. That is like me saying, "it is unfair that I can't play in the US Open. I own golf clubs. I want to play in the US open, why does Tiger woods get invited and I don't?"
Seriously, if you aren't one of the 139 recongizable/invited faces then you probably aren't winning it anyway. And if you are good enough to win it, then you need to be on a team, winning the daily's/open tournaments you can enter, and building your name up just like the other top/known players have had to do and then you'll be on that invitation list. I really doubt that anyone that has a legit shot at getting one of these paid trips isn't going to get invited outside of the most ridiculously lucky run ever.
I have no sympathy for this "everything has to be fair! everyone deserves a trophy!" bullshit that goes on often on this forum. MLG has the right to setup the format however they want. They don't owe anything to lesser known players, it isn't their job to help them get recognized or win a free trip. Again, if you are good enough to be in that talent level then work your way up just like the current known players had to do. It wasn't handed to all of them, they started out being unknown at some point too.

Added this to the OP as I think it is extremely important for everyone to read facts before posting.

I dont even get the 8 Korean thing either I miss the good old MLG's where there actually was good content and players had something to say when they were interviewed.
When I want to watch boring people play starcraft I watch GSL.
